View Full Version : Girls: Movies you're not supposed to like

There have been times when I have been talking with some of my male friends about guys and girls and the movies they typically like or dislike. It was the age-old 'girls like RomComs and guys like Action flicks'. They argue that girls hate action movies and only love romantic comedies and the like.

But of course this is not always the case!...I love both genres and many more. So I was wondering, girls (and guys if you want to do the opposite) what movies do you like that you're not "supposed to"?

Gimme a good action flick over a generic romantic comedy any day.

The Joy Luck Club is usually classified as a Chick Flick, as is The English Patient. I love them both. (Hannibal21 groans audibly at my treachery...)

I also always watch While You Were Sleeping when it's on.

Oh lordy.......I'm a guy.

Give me any great classic, bittersweet romance:
Casablanca (this film means a lot to me)
City Lights
Gone with the Wind
Breakfast at Tiffany's
Lette From an Unknown Woman
West Side Story

Or any great typical 'chick flick':
Something's Gotta Give
Sleepless in Seattle
Down with Love
Moulin Rouge!
Titanic (:p )
While You Were Sleeping

I prefer those over 80% Action/Sci-fi movies....

There, my confession.

Lotsa Takashi Miike,

Ichi The Killer, Visitor Q, Full Metal Yakuza, Dead Or Alive 1 & 2, Audition, The Happiness Of The Katakuri's, Fudoh: The New Generation, The City Of Lost Souls...

Lotsa Takeshi Kitano,

Hana-Bi, Sonatine, Violent Cop, Brother...

Then there's bloody HUNDREDS of random flicks. Here's a few examples,

Kill Bill: Volume 1
The Thing
The Long Good Friday
SCUM
Jaws
Near Dark
Seven Samurai
Raging Bull

Casablanca - Hey, what can I say? The movie rocks and Bogart's a badass ie. my favorite type of movie character.

I'm a dude...and I loved Titanic!(I'm with you Hanbone!)

I tend to think that Casablanca is universally loved by more men than women you'll find(probably for Bogart's iconic character)...its my Dad's favorite film I know that.

In that case, I'll give a shout out to Titanic as well.

James Cameron is God.

Titanic for me as well.

I loved Bridget Jones's Diary and enjoyed Love Actually more than my girl!

I'm afraid I really do fit the stereotype - I like all the 'girlie' stuff. I like my musicals, melodramas, romantic comedies, epic romances etc. No action/sci-fi/western or any other typically 'guy' genre can touch those for me.

But there are a few like: Pulp Fiction, Terminator 2, Indiana Jones trilogy, The Matrix...

I'm a girl and my favorite genre is what you call "mindfuck" movies and horror.

I'd much rather see a movie like Donnie Darko or Memento over something like Moulin Rouge.

It's good that you mentioned this, I have had this thought for a long time and from knowing people in real life, as well as reading several posts on the board, I do find that it's much more popular and loved around male audiences (I mean........great one liners and Bogie, the epitome of cool). Female audiences generally look up to Gone with the Wind, probably because of Vivien Leigh's iconic character.

But, anywho, I do tend to like romance MUCH more than action. What can I say? I'm a hopeless romantic. :)

Big ditto.

That and Four Weddings and a Funeral are the only romantic comedies that I MUST watch when they come on TV. Its just a rule.

Moulin Rouge!-I hated it at first but over time i have a soft spot for this flick!

Casablanca-One of my all time favorite movies, not to mention my favorite romance movie!

For the most part I loathe cliche chick flicks, I'd rather watch a war or sports movie. Some examples:

Das Boot
Patton
Platoon
Miracle
Rocky
Slap Shot

Oh, and I also have a thing for Van Damme and Seagal movies...they're my ultimate guilty pleasure. :D

There's just something about WYWS. It's genuinely charming, without being unctuous.

Sandy Bullock makes it, for me. Julia Roberts or even (to name some I kind of like), Meg Ryan, would've turned it into a mugfest.

Normally I don't like Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock movies. But Everyone Says I Love You and WYWS are definitely exceptions in this case.

Meg Ryan's romantic comedies are a bit better, I ADORE both Sleepless in Seattle and When Harry Met Sally.

^^Exact opposite here. Meg Ryan - eh, I can take her or leave her. Sandra Bullock and Julia Roberts on the other hand, I absolutely LOVE. Though there are maybe a couple of movies from each that I hate (Notting Hill, Runaway Bride and Something to Talk About for Julia, Speed 2 and Ya-Ya Sisterhood for Sandra), 90% of the time I find their movies immensly charming and enjoyable.

Hehehe, keep it up...Sounds like heaps of the guys have confessions :)

As for me, I love the following unconventional flicks:

Aliens Series
Dark City
Kill Bill
Se7en
Raging Bull
and anything Jackie Chan :)

I like Meg Ryan, but she would've been wrong for that role. Sandy was perfect.

The less said about Julia by me, the better for us all.

Snatch , Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, are two of my favorites. I love Jet Li and Jackie Chan movies.

Notting Hill made me nauseous, and I have to turn the channel just when I see the preview for Mona Lisa's Smile.

Im a dude and im goin with

Titanic also I really liked this movie.
Pretty Women

Just to name a few...

Alien Series
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Star Wars Trilogy
The Matrix Trilogy
Rocky Series
Terminator 1&2
Leathal Weapon Series
True Lies

For the most part, I'll steer clear of movies that are Romantic Comedies, especially those with Meg Ryan, Julia Roberts, and Sandra Bullock. If it's a Romantic film, it's also going to have to be heavy with the Drama.

Drama, Thriller, Action, and Sci-Fi would have to be my cup of tea.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts about Meg, Julia & Sandra: I kinda like Meg, have a strong disliking for Sandra and absolutely can't stand Julia

Getting back on topic:

I love Mermaids and really like Bridges Of Madison County, to name a few no one has mentioned.

I'm a girl.....

I have to say I don't really like romantic comedies very much (with a few exceptions) here's some of what I do like........

Horror/suspense films - The Others, The Sixth Sense, Jaws, Session 9, Seven, Silence of the Lambs, Red Dragon, and many others.

- All the Terminator flicks
- All the Rocky films
- some war movies
- most sci-fi flicks

I am definitely a guy, I can attest to that. But I love a good romantic comedy, like "Notting Hill", "Four Weddings and a Funeral", "Kissing Jessica Stein" (see it, if you haven't), "It Could Happen to You" and "Sleepless in Seattle". I'm a big softie.

Don't do it Annie, he'll just use you to get what he wants, then he'll just cheat on you with any other of the girls in this thread, and you don't wanna be with a guy like that.

He doesn't love you like I do...ya see, those are all my favorites as well (except Don't Look Now, haven't seen that one yet), and somehow I see that...we have a connection...

I know you'll make the right decision Annie.

BTW, here's my picks:
Thelma & Louise (1991, 7/10)
White Palace (1990, 7/10)
William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet (1996, 8/10)

SHIVER ME TIMBERS...SUSAN SARANDON'S A DAMN GOOD ACTRESS

Why are all the women choosing Kill Bill: Vol 1? I always thought female empowerment was one of the themes, therefore aimed just as much at the female audience as the male audience (if not more)....
