I tell ya there are not enough of these gems. Movie like Lord of Illusions that pull you into the world and subculture of magicians, and illutionists. Or movies like The Serpent and the Rainbow that draws you into the world of voodoo and the occult. These flicks are almost like documentaries with a story to them. Movies that take you out of your world and immerses you in theirs. If you ask there aren't enough movies that do this. Are there any other ones that you guys can think of? Better ones even...

Session 9, although not being a textbook for a type of the supernatural, sucked me in. The claustrophobia, the backstory of Mary, the backstory of the hospital, the sort of mini-lesson on removing asbestos and performing lobotomies, made me feel right there with the characters. It didn't feel like a set, it felt real.
Also, Angel Heart drew me into its little voodoo world. A well done period piece is like finding treasure, and finding it in a horror movie is damn rare.

One of the best directors who can achieve this is Ridley Scott. Hes really good at making complex worlds that pull us in even though they are not real. Fine examples of this are:
Blade Runner - The city that Deckard lives and works in feels like a living, breathing, dirty and complex megapolis.
Alien - the nostromo felt real, as did the alien world that they landed on and the alien ship they explored. Not to mention the detailed anatomies of the aliens!
Legend - Filled with creatures on every corner, and hey! Its kind of hard to believe that the whole forest was really a set! It looked so real and huuuge!

I've found that books do this better than movies. American Psycho and Frailty drew me in. Oh, and a fav, Identity. All in all, books draw you in much better.

These are all great. I would have to say that some of my favorites (like the two I mention) have a main character he is very similar to you or me who are pretty much just going with the flow. The are ignorant to this new world they have entered. Ex. Harry D'amour in LOI and David Wells(I think that's his name) in SATR.

Another really good example of this is Nicolas Cage's character in 8mm, the way is sucked into to that dark, dirty and lustful underworld of snuff films and the sickos that enjoy them.

Yeah that's pretty much what I was getting at Spacemonkey. Although I never really saw that movie, it looks to be pretty good.

Yeah, its the best example of this type of thing because he really gets drawn into this deep dark dirty pit of dispair on this one. So much so that he never really goes back to being the same normal guy he once was.
I suggest you check it out Evilxxx, and Ill tell you what I allways tell everyone when the subject of this flick comes up: watch Thesis as well. Its in my opinion even better then 8mm. Its a film from spain, so youll have to endure the subtitles, but trust me, you wont be sorry you did.
Hey Dagon is like this as well. Poor guy is on his vacation with his wife on the coast of spain...and blamo! he gets sucked into a world of fish people who worship giant squids.
