I'm a huge fan of cheap dvds because they are an inexpensive way to take a chance on finding a little known gem. A lot of these movies I'd never heard mention of on this board, like Messiah of Evil, aka Dead People, which are actually quite good in a low budget way. What are your cheap blind buys that you'd recommend to a fellow shmoe to keep an eye out for?

Oh yeah, I find my best bargains at Media Play or Sam Goody. They carry some oddball cheapies on their 8.99 racks.

I bought The Brood recently, not ever seeing it, but hearing it was good, and I LOVE it.

I think the only movie I bought without seeing a review was The Deadly Spawn. The alien on the cover just had so many teeth!!!! Turned out to be quite good, especially the carnage at the old ladies tea party.

And the ending is just nuts!!!!:D

I used to buy DVD's blind...

I ending up not liking most of the choices and got rid of them.. Now, I never buy a DVD blind...

I use Netflix to rent a lot... If I like a certain title a lot, then I will buy it...

I bought The Ninth Gate blind, just cause it had Depp in it & happened to be in a two pack with From Hell

It ended up kicking a whole lotta ass

Another movie I bought blind was Jack Frost. Haha, now that I think about it, I don't know what to think of it. It is entertaining, but complete shit at the same time.

It was worth my 7.99 I guess. :D

I wish my blind purchases had been anywhere near as cool as The Changeling, thats got to be one of the best blind buys I've ever heard of!!.

The Evil Dead Trap has to be the most worthy blind buy I've ever made.

Tenebrae is ultimately the dog-turd of this type of shopping, awful film.

How is Tenebrae awful? I thought it was great! Anyway I've always been lucky with my blind buys: Return of the living dead, Lifeforce, Zombie, Day of the dead. I've so far had a winning streak of blind buys although I rarely do it.

I had only heard that they were good, but I didn't really know what they were about. also, I call it a "blind buy" when you've never rented or seen the movie.

My "blind buys" were:

Dead and Buried
God Told Me To
Wendigo
Dog Soldiers
Donnie Darko (great fucking movie)
Session 9 (another great fucking movie)

I forget the other ones but I was most disappointed with Dead and Buried....the other ones are incredible movies that deserve more credit.....

When I was a wide-eyed boy at the age of 19, I blindly bought Thr first Evil Dead , when it came in its initial release DVD. Needless to say, it made me the horror movie fan I am today.

Simple, horrendous dubbing, naff storyline, depthless characters, lack-lustre performances, predictable ending.
I can't think of a single superlative I'm afraid.

Awful :D

After seeing The Beyond and Zombie I start buying any Fulci movie I could get my hands on, all of them were great. I bought The Brood blind and damn if that isn't a classic. I bought Wrong Turn blind, that I kinda regret it isn't a horrible movie just not worth owning in my eyes. I bought Jaccob's Ladder blind and of course that kicked my ass. I've bought alot of movies blind the majority were forgetable but I've found a veiw gems.

Tenebrea is very competently directed by Dario Argento and it is his most american giallo, too.

Argento shows he's a great technician and he's also my favorite horror director.

I agree with JASON 13thh but can definately see JAGGED HALO'S point of view too!

MARTYDS761 -

You bought THE SKULLS blindly? OOPS!!! You'll probably wish you were blind when you watch it! And I LIKE JOSHUA JACKSON and PAUL WALKER!!!

Well Jagged Halo I disagree with you... I found Tenebrae to be a very stylized, mysterious thriller with great kills, an awesome score, some nice twists, and some good t&a. Yes some of the dubbing and acting sucked but that's mostly expected with alot of Itallian horror films.

Whether you consider this work to be his most American giallo is irrelevant to my point of view. Argento is a great technician I do agree, Tenebrae unfortunately, shows little of that unique talent I know Argento possesses.

Thankfully there are numerous other Argento titles which adequately satisfy my monstrous appetite for quality horror.
Tenebrae isn't one of them.

The fact of the matter is, the horrendous dubbing only adds to the already muddled feel to this film. Remember these are my personal criticisms of a film which is surprisingly revered around the world, so I suppose I am the leper of the moment, ho hum I can live with that.

I still rate Argento as a highly talented film-maker, Tenebrae, apart from the T&A, just didn't push the right buttons for me I'm afraid.

I respect what you say because you explain why you don't like this giallo from mister Argento and that's certainly a good point.

I bought "Night Of The Creeps" for $1.50 at Hastings several years ago. Not only did the movie kick ass, but I later found out the movie was (and still is) out-of-print and almost impossible to find.
