*Well I think William's positive outlook made him an instant celeb when Paula, Randy & Simon said nooo to him. I dunno if I see myself running to the music store and buying his CD when it comes out...

American Idol' cast-off William Hung gets a recording contract

Monday, March 8, 2004

(03-08) 12:38 PST NEW YORK (AP) --

Who needs "American Idol"? William Hung doesn't -- he already has a recording contract.

The singer, who became a fan favorite -- but not a judges' favorite -- during open auditions for the Fox series with his spirited version of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs," has signed a deal with Fuse Music Network and Koch Records.

His debut album, tentatively titled "The True Idol," is scheduled for release April 6, it was announced Monday. It will contain "She Bangs," along with another Martin hit, "Shake Your Bon Bon," and a cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man," which Hung sang recently on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show."

And for those of you hankering for more Hung, the disc will include a 40-minute DVD with behind-the-scenes footage from his studio recording sessions and fan questions and answers.

"He may not be the next American Idol, but he is definitely a star and inspiration to everyone who sings in the shower," said Marc Juris, president of Fuse, which will exclusively air his "She Bangs" video.

Koch Records general manager Alan Grunblatt was even more effusive: "He is the new Elvis!"

Hung, a 21-year-old Hong Kong native and civil engineering student at the University of California, Berkeley, has inspired fan clubs and Web sites that sing his praises.

Meanwhile, back at "American Idol," eight of the 12 finalists have been chosen. The remaining four will be announced this week when "wild card" singers -- those who didn't get enough votes the first time -- come back for a second chance.

So is this guy a one man cover band? It sounds like he doesn't have any original songs.

The guy's just a huge joke. He's this little asian guy with a horrible voice that just makes people crack up when they see him try to sing.

He's just not in on the joke yet. He thinks he's good.

Once everyone's tired of him singing "She bangs", he'll go back to salting the fries at burger world. Or building the city wall for South Park.

He wasn't even funny to begin with. But the one question that plagues my mind is who was high on cocaine, pot, acid, e and meth while drinking various sips from hard liquors when they handed this guy a record deal? What fucking gives?

Stuff like this guy makes me wonder what is wrong with America sometimes? He's not funny, talented or anything. Maybe, I just don't get it. The guy even has his own website.

Okay, I didn't see about this until recently so I'm not that informed on it. Is he mentally retarded? Or is he just plain not in the fact that people laugh at him? If he is mentally retarded then this is possibly one of the saddest things I've ever seen done to somebody.

I cant, for the life of me figure out why the people love this guy. And why record execs love him enough to give him a contract ? I for one think hes the most annoying little bugger on the face of the earth.

I think that's probably the true reason and he only got the record contract from sympathy maybe.

I didn't see him on American Idol and I am not sad for that but he is studying Civil Engineering so I doubt he is mentally retarded. I also figure he is in on the joke and just doesnt care. Hell, I wouldn't if I got a record contract.

I like William, and while I did laugh
initially at him, it was when he
re-appeared on American Idol,
that I stopped laughing, as he
seemed to have honed his skills.
I admit that I don't like his choice in
songs, cuz I rather him try heavy metal,
but I am not him, and I say good luck
to him. He is not a joke, rather a human
being, who tried. He really did get better
at singing, and the reason people like
him, is because he is down to earth,
rather then conceited, which is why
the other tens to thousands didn't get
on the show or recieve a record deal.
They were that bad, both ways.
I wish William the best.

Oh man.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner, but I read this thread when it first went up.

I didn't know who the guy was, so looked him up on the net. I've been watching his version of "She Bang" ever since then.

Haha.

heh, best of luck to the guy...

hate him or love him or bash him...the guys got an amazing heart, but then again if every heart warming guy could get a record deal,we'd be in for MORE terrible singing...

however, I am anxious to see the future William Hung music video, and hell,I'll likely download or buy the damn CD...the kids awesome hahaha.

This just goes to show that you do not have to be the best singer in the world to be a singer you just have to have the image that the record tycoon's know that they can sell. As long as you have that look for what they want then they can make you a deal. I mean now-a-days they can make anybody a good singer. But however I do admire William Hung for getting up there and not being afraid to do his thing.
