I have read quite a few reviews of Harry Potter so far and the general opinion is this: People who have read the book like the film, but people who haven't read it think that the film is badly structured, often pointless, over-long and even confusing at some points. It seems that HP is a good example of a literary adaptation which was TOO faithful to the book. They pretty much included everything in the book, not thinking at all if it fits the movie. I'm still intending to see Harry Potter, but I'm NOT going to read the book before seeing it. I think that a film has to stand on it's own.

BTW, thank God they cut lot's of stuff out of LOTR. If they would have included Bombadil and the Old Forest, I think it would have made the film worse. My greatest fear with LOTR is that the film is going to drag with it's 2 hrs 50 min running time.

I might be wrong but ... Wasn't Bombadil in The Hobbit and not in Lord of the Rings ?
I might be wrong, I read those books 2 years ago. Maybe I confuse another character with him.

I went with a couple people who hadn't read the books, and they all liked it. There is a lot of stuff that is in the film and not explained, though in most cases it's not necessary to know... just put there for the book audience.
And I agree 100% about Lord of the Rings. I'd rather see half the scenes done right than all of them done wrong...

I've never read the books, and I liked the movie as well. The only major complaint I have is that the pace could have been tightened in a few places.
I've never read the books, nor am i ever going to read the books, but i'm going to see the film tomorrow evening (Monday 19th). It's an adults-only showing.

My reaction to the reviews was a bit too early. After reading several dozen opinions on the film it seems that the film is getting good/bad reviews regardless if people have read the book or not. So the topic is not up to date anymore.
