What's going on here...nobody goes to see any movies on Friday nite anymore?! /ubb/smile.gif
I guess not.
As per my review, I REALLY loved this film, but will admit that the visuals "did it" to me more than anything. I've been compiling the Schmoes' comments for that movie today, and it appears as though it's sliced right down the middle. Some love it, some hate it.

One word... TRIPPY!
If anything, it's worth seeing just because it's not the usual formulaic-type movie. It's different. It's trippy. It's distrubing. It's violent. It's like watching Natural Born Killers, The Matrix, What Dreams May Come, and Pulp Fiction...all rolled up into one... *while* smokin' up or something like that. /ubb/wink.gif You either like it or you don't...but it's still worth seeing.

That web site sure hit the mark. This film is so different and original you have to see it just to give support to new directors and encourage them to be diverse. Tarsem (1 name...genius!) made a great debut. I love this film. It will definenately make my top 10 of the year. And I am glad you made that point how The Cell looks like What Dreams May Come art style...especially the hell sequences. See this film to show Hollywood we don't need 30 new braindead action flicks a year!

I will be two months before the film comes to finland, but it doesn't look very promising in my mind... Great visuals, but what about the script? It seems that even people who like the film can't say too many good things about the screenplay. I've heard that it has huge plotholes, cardboard characters, weak dialogue and bad structure.
I guess I'll have to read some more reviews, before I make my mind whether I'm going to see it.

Tuukka you were the one who made a topic about The Cell and how you were excited to see it. And to defend the film, no the characters aren't too deep, but thats not the point of the film. The point is to get some ideas out that have been in some peoples minds for a long time and The Cell passes with flying colors. It is very creative and in some respects is a visual masterpiece. As for the plotholes, I don't even know to begin with that. Everything was solid and NEVER became too complex to create plot holes.

This movie is definitely not for everyone and for those of you who do not like seeing didturbing images, do not see this movie. The visuals are amazing though. Quite possibly the best I have seen in a movie for a while.Only one real flaw: The ending was a little weak and predictable. Butt if you are a Jennifer Lopez fan( and a fan of one of her body parts) there is a very unnecessay but much appreciated shot of her ass.

Vincent D'Onofrio is a magician. He takes over any role he is given and becomes the role. Some people think that Deniro is a master of acting discipline because he gained some weight, think again...Vinnie has the goods mentally, Deniro is just a psychopath (in real-life I mean). Vince Vaughn is happening but he looks pretty puffy and comatose in this film. Reminds me of Balthazar Getty in "ShadowHours" where BZAR looks like Charlie Sheen on Prozac. Ms. Lopez always straightens out my longfellow ever since Ollie Stone's "U-TURN". The visuals were pretty cool by Hollywood standards but I already saw all of this stuff in my Nine Inch Nails Video Collection (which is way more bizarre, by the way). Overall "The Cell" beats another viewing of whatever freak-of-the-week teenage/romance/suspense run-of-the-mill pop-culture reference crap-fest that Hollywood generally churns out like last summer's butter...spoiled rotten...

Has anyone of you been following The Cell talkback session at the Aint-it-cool-news? A really smart, thought provoking conservation going on in there. When I read stuff like that, I really appreciate AICN. It's a great site. Unfortunately I will have to wait for two months before the film comes to finland. I guess it will be ok, but not much more.
You should check out Harry's and Moriarty's talkbacks at www.aintitcool.com, (http://www.aintitcool.com,) if you're interested.

This probably has what some might call "spoilers"
I liked it but that was it! It wasn't great and it wasn't bad. The main thing that bothered me about the movie was the whole race to save the chick. It was like they said lets just throw that part in there for some filler. There were just to many holes in the plot. I mean gimme a break why did the detective have to go into the killers head to figure out who manufactured the table he used. They would have checked that out immediatley. Oh ya and you could not waste that much water in California and not have someone wonder were the hell its going. I hope the FBI in real life arn't that dumb. They should have just given a little back story about the killer and made the movie about trying to figure out what made him the way he was and why he did what he did by going into his mind. Oh ya and I know I will get flamed for this but I do not like Jennifer Lopez at all especially that big ol butt of hers. That is just my 2 cents.

Really, Tuuka? I thought you were honestly being sarcastic about a "smart" conversation going down at AICN...and not because I don't like them, I think they're real good at what they do, but their TALK BACKS are NOT really known to be the most "informative" sessions on the Net.
In fact, I did read Moriarty's review of THE CELL and other than the fact that he hated it completely, I thought he went WAAAAY out off line by ripping into Ebert in his "review" and calling the director "Tarzan" through his whole diatribe.
I don't know...
Sometimes those guys are fun to read, but other times, you wonder if there shouldn't be a leash strapped around some of their juvenile lashings. Oh well, maybe it should all just be taken with a grain of salt, eh?

Ebert and I usually agree on stuff like "Boogie Nights" & "Magnolia" but I didn't understand him giving "The Cell" four stars (****). I thought he must have been kinda strung out when he saw it, you know one of those donut hole binges of his (I can say this stuff because I am not a professional).

Yeah, I agree with you Joblo. Moriarty made a poor review, but talkback was a lot better than his review and same counts for the talkback for Harry's review. This was thanks to a few people like SDG who made really long, well thought arguments about the subject. Those talkbacks made me really think about not only about the film in question, but movie criticism in general.
I posted the earlier message, because I wanted people to know that there are sometimes very smart and thought provoking conservations going on at the AICN. It's not all just fanboy bullshit, like some people think.
So if you wan't to know what I'm talking about, check the talkback for Harry's review. It's really good, even better than the Moriarty's talkback.

Well I liked the Cell a lot, but if i probably won't give it 4 stars (probably 3.5). One of my most recent disagreement with Roger Ebert is Gladiator... he gave it 2 stars only because "the lighting is too dark" - I thought it was an awesome movie!

Whoa. This was a great, strange-but-still-makes-sense film that I came into with high expectations and left with expectations fulfilled, and then some. It really blew me away I thought everything was handled very well and the acting was superb, also Tarsem deserves a nomination for Best Director. This is now my 3rd best film of the year, so far (after Wonder Boys and High Fidelity, but b4 Boiler Room and American Psycho) and it makes it on my top 250, very intresting, very mind blowing, very great. Go see it with an OPEN MIND and you will love it...also it's probably not as strange as you think.
P.S. PLEASE see it and if you already have see it AGAIN. I really want this to be number one cause I can't stand the idea of Bring It On being number 1 at the box-office while this sits at three. Help support great films, see this movie.

Best movie of the summer. I would love to see this again like Quentin suggested. As well it really isn't that strange of a movie. Such a great movie. Probalay placing in at number two so far this year.

I really hope this movie will get a nomination for the Oscars and I think the performance by Jennifer Lopez is awesome! Too bad it's the #3 movie this week...

I guess I'll have to give the film a try when it comes to finland. I just have never been a big fan of two hour long music videos... And according to everything I have heard, that's exactly what the Cell is. I really really dislike films like Natural Born Killers, Dobermann and What dreams may come. Cool looking music video visuals don't make a good film. Hopefully Cell will have a decent script.

Cell has a good script and it's a very good movie.
Pinch, Lopez was good but nothing great. No T&A from her though (big fan of her A) /ubb/frown.gif
