I was cleaning out some of my old junk the other day and came upon some old programs and things I had kept over the years. I was just wondering what were your people's first live sporting event memories that you've attended.

Mine was circa 1981 at the old Metropolitan Stadium in Minneapolis for a Twins game. It was a nice old school outdoor stadium that they retired the next year for the useless BaggyDome. My dad an I were in attendance that day to see a Sunday afternoon game between the Twins and Tigers. I remember a dude by the name of Bombo Rivera struck out to end the game against the Tigers closer at the time, who may or may not have been Willie Hernandez. I can't confirm that so dont quote me. Anyway Bombo went down looking on three straight pitches to end the game. That kind of summed up the Twins in those days.

Wait a second. This could be considered a sanctioned punishment for schmoes in our fantasy leagues. Stories like this are fines handed down by commisioner bmain for those who don't adhere to his rules of smack talk. Apologies all around for non fantasy league schmoes. For you fantasy schmoes who are looking at this thread, I guess you got your hand caught in the preverbial cookie jar. I may have owed you one anyway so be on your toes.

What about you schmoes?

Mine was not a UM game, but a Detroit Tigers v. Baltimore Orioles game. That is about all I can remember. It was probably around the 1980 or 1981 seasons. I'd have to double check to be sure. Really the Tigers 1984 season is the first season that I really have any clear memory of for obvious reasons.

Oh by the way, PJ I wouldn't consider this as a punishment story. It's about baseball and it conjurs up good memories. For your punishment stories I prefer the so we were drunk from all the PBR and farm animal sex and then we went to an Iowa game type stories. :D

How the hell can a Tiger's game be considered anything BUT punishment?;)

I don't remember the specifics (too many years of drug use), but my first live major sporting event was definitely a Dodger game. Probably circa 1974. Ron Cey, Davey Lopes, Steve Garvey, Rick Monday, etc.

Man, those were the days.

Actually its well known around Detroit that if you are a fan of the Tigers and the Lions you must have a little bit of a masochistic side.:D

I vaguely remember my dad taking me to some basketball (or was it hockey?) game when I was just a tot. My memories of that are extremely fuzzy, obviously. First sporting event I do remember well though is an Indians game I went to at the old Cleveland stadium back when I was about 13 or 14. They gave out free stuff that day (plastic Indians cups, Indians seat cushions) and I still have that stuff. As well as my Indians baseball cap with the old Indians logo on it, which I actually bought back then. Man, that was over 20 years ago.

The earliest memory I have is my brother taking me to go see a Habs game at the old Montreal Forum back in the days when they sold standing only seats as well.

I believe the Canadiens were playing the Buffalo Sabres.

Another good memory is going down to the Drake Relays track meet when I was in middle school and grade school with my dad and my best friend at the time. It is a big deal as far as track meets go, they got high school, college, university, and special invitational stars such as Carl Lewis, Micheal Johnson, ect. I had a blast! The best part was getting to miss school on a Friday to go, it was a two day event Friday/Saturday. Outside of some very nasty sunburns/windburns it was a great time. It is held the last weekend in April and it seems it was always extremely hot or cold that weekend. Saw alot of great races.:)

1977 - The Kansas City Chiefs vs. The Seattle Seahawks. I was about 8 then. Everyone was hollering obsceneties at the KC quarterback (Mike Livingston) for sucking so bad. I'm happy to report that things have gotten better since then.

I recall walking around the now imploded Vet in Philly with the now imploded family many moons ago. I must have been 5 years old. I was lucky to catch many games at the Vet or at Fenway over the years. I also had season tickets to M.L.L. eons ago, dont know why but my dad thought it was fun.

I think mine was a CFL game in 1991 between the Calgary Stampeders and Ottawa Roughriders. Not long after came my second, which was a Blue Bombers-Roughriders game.

My first Pro-Baseball game was the Cleveland Indians versus the Boston Red Soxs in 1995, I was 10 years old at the time. First year Cleveland had been in the play-offs in ages. It was awesome, something I will remember for the rest of life.

Going to Tigers games were not always punishment. Especially in the old stadium. That place was awesome.

Tiger Stadium had her charms for sure, but I don't think I could back after going to Comerica. It was next to impossible to find a seat in Tiger Stadium that didn't have at least one post obstructing your vision or at least thats how it seemed.

But you could always count on at least a couple home runs every game. And there was the aura of the place housing so much history. It was always fun at night games when we had to park across the express way and trek across the bridge with beggers lined up all the way across....good times :D

Comerica is more expensive, but is absolutely a work of art. The only reason it does not get more attention like Pac Bell and other newer ones is because the Tigers are so horrible. ESPN.com did a tour of all the parks and it got the 2nd or 3rd high score if I remeber right. All the player statues are great. Being greeted by Ernie Harwell's voice is awesome. All the little exhibits around the stadium are cool. You can't forget the tiger merry go round and the baseball shaped ferris wheel. The sight lines are great. Closer fences might make for more homers, but I like seeing all that green out there too.

And because Comerica is not a homerun-friendly park, that's all people care about these days 'tis a shame. I admire the Tiger organization for building a staidum like Comerica in this day and age.

I can't really remember which one I went to first but it's between a Minnesota Kix game and a Minnesota Twins game in the early 70's.

My dad took my brother and me and I remember seeing Rod Carew and eating ice cream with a wooden stick.

I have yet to go to Comerica. I heard the stadium was beautiful. Enormus too. I have driven by it before. I was suprise by the size of it. Mark my words one day that place will be a packed house constentley.

Also a side note. For anyone who's been to Jacob's Field, do you ever feel on the upper deck if you trip you're basically screwed lol.

Cricket! Australia v New Zealand at the MCG. Spank-fest as I recall, and a jolly good time was had by all.

I'm not sure what was my actual first live sporting event!
But here are a few of the first that I do remember...

When I was a wee lad growing up in England My mom took me, my sister and our cousins to a Football game at Wembley stadium! Who do you ask was playing? Yes it was the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins! It was during the summer of the year following the 2 met in the Superbowl 84-85 I believe...Yep even in England I grew up a 49ers fan...unfortunately my sister became a Dolphins fan...she liked Marino!
(Still to this day the only Pro-football game I have watched)

Ummm what else...one of my friends(Matthew) in school growing up was a Brighton supporter...hell cause they were like the closest team near our school more or less in E. Sussex. And so for his birthdays we'd go to football matches at Brighton...so those were some of my first live sporting events. Always hovering around the top of the 2nd division as I recall(and still do;))

Also, on our holiday to Orlando, Disney World, Sea World and Epcot Centre over Christmas during I don't know 86-87 something like that...my Dad got tickets to the Orange Bowl between Oklahoma and Arkansas. My Dad is a huge Oklahoma Sooners fan because he and my mom lived in Oklahoma for a few years after they got married...he had family there etc.

The first ever sporting event I attended was a football match between Birmingham City and West Bromwich Albion. I was forced to sit in the Birmingham end, even though I was cheering on the Baggies. As a Villa fan I wasn't too happy when the chants of "Shit on The Villa" started.

The match ended 0-0, and attempts at turning me into one of the lesser-beings failed. I was young then mind you (it must've been around 10-15 years ago), and I still ripped into the Birmingham fans at how crap their team played.

Some things never change ;):D

Basketball game timber wolves vs. Jazz. The only thing I can remeber is that we were up so high you could barely see the ball.

Well, I've been to many live WWE events, tapings, shows, and pay-per-views. Of course, if that counts as a "sporting event." It probably doesn't in the eyes of many..... :D

Anyway, I've been to quite a few Dodgers and Angels games. However, those were not very memorable, since I've never been a baseball fan and find the sport to be unbelievably overrated. The only memorable thing about those experiences was chowing down on all the good junk food the stadiums got.... ;)

I also was very fortunate to see Karl Malone, John Stockton, and the old Utah Jazz face off against the *cough* Clippers *cough* at the Staples Center a few years ago. That was great.

Unfortunately, I've never been to a Lakers game, and I've never been to a football game. If it counts, I did head off to San Diego for the festivities during their last two SuperBowls. Speaking of the SuperBowl, I want to attend at least one before I meet my death; it's important to me.... :D

I remember my dad and brother taking me to a 49ers game when I was 7 or 8. He gave me a sip of beer and I hated it and had no interest in drinking til way later in life, so mission accomplished. I think there was also a bee that kept swarming around intimidating me. I have an odd memory.

I think it was back in '98. It was the Colorado Avalanche vs the Chicago Blackhawks, It was so fun I got in the press box and meet all the players afterward and to top it off the Avs kicked the Blackhawk's ass :D

I recommend minor league baseball to anyone who hasn't went. Cheap prices, a great atmosphere, and fun times abound. I'll watch an I-Cubs game anyday as opposed to the Twins up at the BaggyDome.
