Wasn't there a team called The Millionaires?

outsyder
03-22-2004, 11:14 PM
Vancouver. I was just wondering about that one.:D

ToRontoRon
03-23-2004, 01:11 AM
The Vancouver Millionaires, (later Vancouver Maroons), weren't an NHL team. They played in the PCHA, and I think some other league which also competed for the Stanley Cup before the NHL took sole ownership of the trophy for the 1926/27 season.

I'd say don't count them in here because they weren't an NHL team. If you do, then there are a tonne of other teams you could also include. :

Seattle Metropolitans
Calgary Tigers
Edmonton Eskimos
Winnipeg Victorias
Montreal Victorias
Montreal Shamrocks
Montreal Amateur Athletic Association
Kenora Thistles
Toronto Blueshirts
Ottawa Silver Seven
etc., etc., etc.

Other than that, you do have all of the former NHL teams in there.

There are a few sticky questions such as, should the Oakland Seals, California Seals, and California Golden Seals all count as one because they were the same franchise and didn't move, (though a different name)? And if they are combined as one then the New York Americans and Brooklyn Americans should also be combined as one because they did not actually move anywhere either, just changed their name for one year to try to grow a New York vs. Brooklyn rivalry like they had in baseball. But if they are technically seperate then should the Chicago Black Hawks, (1926/27 - 1985/86), technically be seperate from the Chicago Blackhawks, (1986/87 - present)? I know this is the very definition of nit-picking, but we should clear this up before the tourney starts.

And great idea outsyder. :D

Seems fair enough.:p

And remember: THE VOTE IS FOR THE TEAM AS IT IS. DO NOT VOTE FOR A TEAM BASED ON THEIR PREVIOUS NAMES/LOCATIONS.

Well, I couldn't stand the Coyotes' 'pyjama' uniforms, plus they've never won a playoff round.

Florida has some young Canadian stars in Luongo, Bouwmeester, and Horton, and at least they made it to the Finals that one year in 1996...

Funny, I didn't hear about Ottawa defeating Toronto in the last 24 hours in the playoffs. ;)

As for the match-up, I have to go with the St. Louis Blues.

St. Louis' Stanley Cup drought is exactly as long as the Maple Leafs', the only difference being that the Leafs have won it before. They also seem to always be injured, just like the Leafs, yet fight through the injuries. And from what I've seen, I just like the city and the fans. It's a good hockey market and the fans don't dump their beers on visiting teams' fans all the time like Philadelphia or Pittsburgh.

They're my favourite current U.S. team, and # 6 overall, behind Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and yes, Ottawa. (I know, I know, I'm supposed to hate them, but if the Leafs are out, I always root for them. They are after all a Canadian team. The only Canadian team that I really dislike and absolutely never root for is Montreal.)

I do like Nashville's name and logo, however it isn't enough to topple the Blues.

You have to admire the way they go about things, Its like that hockey attitude from 1975 that they just cant shake it. And more power to them. Clarke is still a god in there eyes because of the back to back cups, needless to say they could have won a few more since but.............

Sorry Haddonfield. I like the Bruins more than most teams, but like you said, it's a tough draw going up against a Canadian team. I would have taken Boston against most American teams if it's any consolation.

Based on this season, I'd maybe go with Boston just because of the Bertuzzi incident, but this is all time, and I have to go with the Canucks. After all, Vancouver had, imo, the best uniforms ever in the late '80's with the yellow home jerseys and the skate logo together. I LOVED those uniforms.

Greatest defenceman ever, and maybe even the greatest player ever. +128 or whatever that one year is just insane. If his career wouldn't have been cut short, I think he would have been remembered as the greatest hockey player ever, instead of #2.

Calder Trophy (1967)
Norris Trophy (1968-1975) That would be 8 in a row!
Art Ross (1970 & 1975) Only Dman ever to win it

Conn Smythe (1970-1972) Two in a row
Lou Marsh Trophy (1971)

Canada Cup (1976) and was MVP

Games: 657
Goals: 270
Assists: 645
Points: 915

The Winnipeg Jets for sure. They had some really good teams in the '80's, but never went anywhere because they happened to be in the same division as Edmonton and Calgary. My second favourite team behind you know who before their untimely demise. Everyone thinks I'm nuts, but I'm pretty sure that one day the Jets will be back in Winnipeg. I always thought that even before they were gone.

The Minnesota North Stars, on the other hand, were always a team that had my Leafs' number, even when they were the only team worse than the Leafs in the League. But I still respect them as a good rival. This may sound weird, but I'd LOVE to see just one more Toronto Maple Leaf/Minnesota North Star game. They've got great uniforms too, which makes it a bit closer. But I always loved the Jets.

There's a very good chance that I'll pick your American team in the next round, depending on who they play. If Boston faces Montreal, it's a no-brainer. I'm just going to give my honest opinion of which team I like more in each matchup, and it's therefore likely the 'B's will get my vote.

I hate the Chicago Blackhawks. Jeremy Roenick, Chris Chelios, Tony Amonte, Ed Belfour...

Okay, so I'm living in the past a bit, and one of those guys has admittedly kind of grown on me, ;) , but they're just a sad mess of a franchise.

The Habs once had to bail the franchise out during the Original Six days to keep them in the League, they're a joke now, and they have the fewest Cups of the Original Six teams, (three).

Besides, I LOVED the Sharks' old teal road uniforms.

San Jose Sharks for me.

My vote is for the St. Louis Eagles. The simple reason being that the Philadelphia Quakers are the worst team in NHL history if you look at the percentage of available points they acquired in their history. In their only season in the League,1930/31, they put up a laughable 4-36-4 record for a .126 point percentage. Ouch.

It is tough to vote for the Eagles, though, since the team relocated from Ottawa after the loser Senators franchise folded.

:)

Teeheehee. I thought that would get you wound up. ;)

I was just joking about the Sens/Eagles connection, and my vote was for the Eagles because the Quakers were so pathetic.

But I want to make two points:

Firstly, the Senators were actually the Ottawa Silver Seven for a lot of those seasons, and their first Cup as the "Senators" was in 1909, but that doesn't really matter.

Secondly, it's a bit unfair to count the Stanley Cups before the NHL formed since it wasn't very organized and the trophy could be contested like the WWE championship belt. There were challenges for it that didn't involve any leagues.

It's therefore a bit unfair to think of the Sens franchise as having won 14 Cups. (Not that total number of Cups won means everything when comparing franchises, but it is a pretty important little nugget to have). Here's an excerpt from the "Bible" of hockey; The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League called 'Total Hockey' - 1998 version. Page 223, Ottawa Senators section, 3rd paragraph:

"From 1893 to 1934, when Ottawa teams were eligible to compete for the Stanley Cup, the Ottawa Silver Seven and Senator teams combined for nine championship seasons. This Stanley Cup record was unprecedented at the time and remains tied with Detroit for third behind the 24 victories of the Montreal Canadiens and the 13 of the Toronto Maple Leafs/St. Pats/Arenas. (A case can also be made that the 1914 Stanley Cup victory of the Toronto Blueshirts gives the franchise 14 championships.)"

NOTE: Since this was published, the Wings have passed the Sens to move into sole possession of third.

Like I said, total number of Cups isn't everything, but I thought I'd mention this.

That site is outdated. Ottawa has since then had 2 more Stanley Cups recognized by the NHL at the beginning of this year, as the banners are hanging from the rafters after they were put there at the beginning of this season. The total is 11 Cups. Although I am sure there are at least 9 recognized by the NHL (there are at least that many banners in the rafters). It's pretty difficult to say when the NHL is allowing Stanley Cup championships to be recognized, as everyone seems to have a different opinion.

Here's the history from 1903-1927:

1903- Ottawa Silver Seven defeat the Montreal Victorias March 7 & 8 (1-1, 8-0) and they defeat the Rat Portage Thistles March 12 & 14).
1904- Ottawa Silver Seven defeat the Winnipeg Rowing Club December 30, 1903, January 1, & 4 (9-1, 2-6, 2-0) they defeat the Toronto Marlboros February 23 & 25 (6-3, 11-2) they defeat the Montreal Wanderers March 2 (5-5- Montreal loses by default) and they defeat the Brandon Wheat Kings March 9 & 11 (6-3, 9-3).
[/b]1905[/b]- Ottawa Silver Seven defeat Dawson City January 13 & 16 (9-2, 23-2) and the Rat Portage Thistles March 7, 9, & 11 (3-9, 4-2, 5-4)
1906- Ottawa Silver Seven defeat Queen's University February 27, & 28 (16-7, 12-7) and Smiths Falls March 6 & 8 (6-5, 8-2).
1906- Montreal Wanderers defeat the Ottawa Silver Seven March 14, & 17 (9-1, 9-3).
1908- Montreal Wanderers defeat the Ottawa Victorias January 9, & 13 (9-3, 13-1).
1909- Ottawa Senators go unchallenged
1910- Ottawa Senators defeat Galt January 5, & 7 (12-3, 3-1) and the Edmonton Eskimos January 18, & 20 (8-4, 13-7).
1911- Ottawa Senators defeat Galt March 13 7-4, and Port Arthur March 16 13-4.
1915- Vancouver Millionaires defeat the Ottawa Senators March 22, 24, & 26 (6-2, 8-3, 12-3).
1920- Ottawa Senators defeat the Seattle Metropolitains March 22, 24, 27, 30, & April 1 (3-2, 3-0, 1-3, 2-5, 6-1).
1921- Ottawa Senators defeat the Vancouver Millionaires March 21, 24, 28, 31, & April 4 (1-2, 4-3, 3-2, 2-3, 2-1).
1923- Ottawa Senators defeat the Vancouver Maroons March 16, 19, 23, & 26 (1-0, 1-4, 3-2, 5-1) and the Edmonton Eskimos March 29, & 31 (2-1, 1-0).
1927- Ottawa Senators defeat the Boston Bruins April 7, 9, 11, 13 (0-0, 3-1, 1-1, 3-1).

I think they are all recognized, but I'm not entirely sure. I DO know that the first banner at the CC is from the very early 1900's.

Just not sure which one.
