Question About David Beckham

Okay okay, no, that's not my question.

My question is--- How talented of a player is he? Is he a sports icon because of his skills, or because of his looks and the marrying of a Spice Girl?

That is something I am curious about, because I have no idea if he is really just a mediocre player who gets so much publicity simply for being adorable. Or if he is one of the best at the sport.

Quite the talented player indeed, but maybe a little overrated. He still is our national captain and more than likely will remain the captain for some time.

He's one of the best crossers of a ball, and is renowned for his free-kicks. As Matt says, a bit overrated, but he'd love to have him in his Arsenal. :D

To me, one of the best players of the world -- you could say he was a bit overrated playing with Manchester United, but the way he's adapted to the style of play of the Real Madrid and is still sticking out as one of the top players they got is impressive. To me, with Zinedine Zidane and Robert Pires, he's the best midfielder in the game today -- and the top player of the English national squad.

Beckham is one of the most overrated players to have played the game...he's lethal on free kicks and set pieces but beyond that, he doesn't do much. Give me Bobby Pires or PV4 anyday.

Pires is quality, even if he does play for the scum.

I got a question for you blokes who find him overrated. If he is that overrated...

...how come Manchester United miss him so much?

C'mon. Man Utd lost him and Veron before this season, and they went from the best of the best, can't lose, Red Devils, to, well, we're managing, we're 2nd and Porto kicked our asses out of the Champion's League. Sure, Alex Ferguson is a nut, and sure, losing Rio Ferdinand for most of the season is a bitch. But David Beckham is a complete, achieved playmaker like there's only very few in the world -- and Man Utd couldn't replace him. And that's one of the major reasons they're having a harder time this season IMHO.

You have your defense to thank for that....Beckham or no Beckham, with Ferdinand out and with Wes Brown and John O' Shea in the back...you're going to be exploited, it's the defense and it has nothing to do with Beckham.

Aw, c'mon. ;) What's MU's midfield now? It's Ryan Giggs. Oh, and some Scottish kid. And Paul and Ole Gunnar, who sure can go for the goal, but sure as hell can't do everything the way Beck can. Oh, and the leg-breaking, bone-crushing, fair-play wonder that is Roy Keane. ;)

I honestly think that what MU is missing this year, above all, is Beck. You got Van Nistlerooy and Saha in front, backed up by some nice offensive midfielders, and you got a so-so defense since Ferdinand is out. Who'd you have to run and pass the ball and recuperate it in-between? No one as good as Beck is, or as Vieira or Pires are for Arsenal.

That's my opinion. And I sure as hell stand by it. :)

If he wasn't talented, he wouldn't have been a MU captain, he wouldn't be England's national team captain and he wouldn't be playing for one of the best, if not the best with the current players, European teams, Real Madrid... How did Hugh Grant say in Love actually? "England is the country of Beckham's right (...left...) foot."

P.S. I still can't forget how England lost to Brazil in World Cup semifinal... give me some Tylenol!
