For saying Jesus.
I have no source other than The View and Entertainment Tonight
My thoughts on this: What in the fuck? CSI and Law and Order SVU (both shows i like) are still on the air but the word Jesus gets bleeped.

Welcome to Ashcrofts America.
Where wardrobe malfunctions and saying "Jesus" on Late Night TV are far more of a worry than soldiers coming home from Iraq in body bags or a tanking economy.

Alright, let me defend CBS here...
They've gotten tons of shit for what happened during the Super Bowl, and given the FCC's recent rampange on anything offensive, they're trying to play it safe, as some 66-year old woman most likely would've been offended by Janet saying Jesus and complained and, BAM, CBS has another scandal.
It's not like they wanted to censor it. It's the fucking FCC's fault.

I was suprised when I found out what the word was but now that I think about it, I dont think I've ever heard someone say Jesus in that manner on a talk show before. It is certainly ever present in tv movies and episodes though.
Regarding the Letterman appearance- she insisted the wardrobe thing was an accident but when he asked her what was supposed to happen she would not say. Although I should add that I didnt' see the entire interview only a lot of excerpts so I might have missed something.

The censors are pretty fucking stupid sometimes...
but they're in the right on this one.
Saying the name 'Jesus' in a blasphemous manner by anyone (not counting the unedited versions of Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan that aired on NBC and ABC) on the major broadcasting networks (NBC, ABC, FOX, UPN, and CBS) is considered just as bad as 'Fuck'.
So uh...yeah, I'm going with them on this one. But why in the BLUE HELL ...this is actually NEWS...
is...fucking insane.
SHIVER ME TIMBERS...I THINK I WANNA LOOK AT A PIC OF JANET'S TIT AGAIN...

C'mon..."blasphemous manner"? This is 2004, for crying out loud!
This is one of the rare things that makes me love French television. People can say shit, fuck, cunt, Jesus, Bob, suck my knob, and even DO those things -- and everyone's cool with it. Fucked up country...but easy-livin'.

I hope our public tv stays the way it is- I'd rather have somewhere to watch tv with my family and polite company. It's bad enough that they have on ads for douching and impotence. If they err on the side of being too cautious then so be it. If Janet had said "Stop it, David" that would've gotten the message across just as effectively

I dont see anything wrong with what happened, but I think we all know by now how easily offended and overly censoring this country can get and be. I just ignore it anymore.

people say "jesus" in real life...do you think you'll be able to shelter your children forever? i'm sure you wouldn't mind if somebody said jesus in church...
also, do you think it would have been bleeped had she said, "oh buddha!" or "allah damn it!"
and as far as ads for douching and impotence, what difference does it make what the ads are for? they're still ads, and the bottom line is if you don't like them, you always have to choice to change the channel...
what bothers me is the fact that people have been taking their kids to see "Passion of the Christ"...if you want to talk about something that will scar little kids for life, why don't you take them to a movie in which a man is tortured and killed in bloody, graphic ways?

For God's sake. Retarded FCC. OH NO, SOMEONE SAID JESUS. KILL ME NOW.
So much for the land of the free. I bet the majority of Americans wouldn't give two shits about Janet Jackson saying "Jesus" on TV. And it's a well-known fact that President Bush swears like a sailor. What's wrong with it? They're words, and words, unlike violence, can only hurt if you let them. She wasn't insulting anyone, so let her say it.
All this censorship really burns my libertarian streak.

Letterman is boring enough that I figure the over 60-set must love him. Puts 'em right to sleep.

Sounds fair. Commercials for Viagra all around, but saying "Jesus" needs a bleep. ;)
I get the whole children issue. That's why I say bleep "fuck" or "shit" or "ass" -- fair enough (even though my personal point of view on the issue is, don't bleep shit, and let the parents decide what their kids are gonna watch. But bleeping stuff there is okay for me...somewhat unefficient, but ok). But bleeping "Jesus"?

Yeah they say it in real life all the time but some people DO find it offensive and I did say I was talking about "public" airways. Also, I did say that if they err on being alittle too correct then I'm ok with that- slippery slope and all of that. If they hadn't have bleeped it I probably wouldn't have noticed it to tell you the truth but if they did that is fine with me.
The douche and impotence ads are totally ignorable right now when I watch tv but it SHOULD be embarrassing- if everything is totally permissable and acceptable life will be pretty boring :) If everyone walked around naked nothing would be sexy anymore.
Lynn M.
Letterman used to be brilliantly funny- he was the one who pioneered the whole behind the scenes stuff (where he took the camera backstage where we had never been before)and he did tons of great practical jokes. Did you ever see when he used to send Rupert out on those? He used to set Rupert up and tell him to do stuff thru a hidden earphone-cracked me up! Leno has stolen tons of his stuff. I dont' know what happened to Letterman- he seems to have gotten burnt out
I'm with col. Kurtz on this one. You're happy to bomb iraq, but you can't say fuck- or indeed jesus- on tv because it's offensive??? Bloody hell.
Oh and I personally think those ads for jack daniels and co. are more harmful than ones for impotence pills.

Yeah, Jack Daniels can cause impotence :D
But seriously, what does bombing Iraq have to do with this? Maybe a little jab at conservatives, huh?

(OT remark: Never mind 'a little jab', I'm more than willing to put both my size 12 boots into the conservatives anytime you like :D But I don't think we should go there on these boards.)
My point is they're just words. The world wouldn't stop turning if you said 'em on tv. I just find it totally bizarre the usa is so strict with tv yet so liberal with movies; reading this kinda thing just amuses me considering I remember how shocked I was when I walked into the violent ar-nuld picture eraser in a florida cinema and saw that at least 20 of the audience were under 13. As I say it's a bizarre irony.

If you make a movie about Jesus, it's ok to say it. You kind of half to really. But if you say something like "Oh Jesus!" when shocked about something that's not Jesus, they bleep you. I guess that's how the FCC works

Apparently, it's being considered as "said in a blasphematory fashion", meaning you're saying "Jesus" as a curse, meaning you're putting the name of God on the same level as the words fuck, cunt, doodle-my-noodle, and so on and so forth.
And yes, it's bullshit. I'm sure Mr. Christ is up there laughing at us. ;)

Jesus fuckin' Christ man. They have to bleep out the word Jesus on T.V now in the U.S. I don't know anyone even very religious people who are offended by that saying.
What are they going to have to bleep out next, Holy Smokes, Poop, For God's Sake. What happened to freedom of speech and expression in America. You always hear the politicans claiming the U.S is the most free country in the world and then they go out and start censoring what can be seen/heard on T.V, in movies, in music and in video games.

I'm in total agreement. I don't make a habit out of saying the Lord's name in vein, but I hear all kinds of worse shit than Jesus mentioned on air and it never gets a second glance. While I'm at it, violent movies and TV are still okay, but swearing and nude body images are STILL taboo. That sucks ass.
