I vote for Saving Private Ryan also... but I like some of the older classics as well, Von Ryans Express and Force 10 From Navarone for example.

Quentin, I seriously hope you meant Braveheart, if..., and Battleship Potemkin to be in a category of revolutions, not the Revolutionary War itself, that confused me, please correct that.
For my picks:
Saving Private Ryan
Apocalypse Now
Das Boot
These have affected me the most out of all the ones I have seen, including The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and Platoon; which, I don't think they were as great as I thought they would be when I saw them. Although, the first half of Full Metal Jacket was a superb piece of filmmaking.
It looks like nobody really liked Das Boot, as it is one of the finest movies about war ever made.

All the movies you guys have said are great but one film that doesn't get much attention is "A Midnight Clear" set during World War II. I rented it and it is a very good film.

Fergus, they all deal with A Revolutionary War, not The American Revolutionary War. I didn't like Patriot much and can't remember a good movie about the American Revolutionary War, but those are about Revolutionary Wars, against the English, a ship, and a boarding school.

Saving Private Ryan is the mutz nutz when it comes to war films. It emphaises the horrors of war.
The first 20 minutes is the scariest 20 minutes I have ever seen in a film!!

Fergus, I've seen Das Boot a few times, English and subtitled, and I just loved the damn thing. When they are stuck at the bottom and have to be super quiet, I find myself holding my breath and not making a sound the whole time. The running time doesn't bother me, its definately in my top 5 war movies, everyone should go and rent it right now.
no order...
Das Boot
Dirty Dozen
Saving Private Ryan
Full Metal Jacket
Three Kings
Quentin - Why no Saving Private Ryan for WWII?
Isn't it ironic that the big Oscar honcho - Coming Home - isn't mentioned here?? I guess, like Born on the Fourth of July, it's more about the aftermath than the war itself - but it really was just a schmaltz-fest that no one can remember now.
