Schwarzenegger Saves Struggling Swimmer in Hawaii
2 hours, 36 minutes ago
BURBANK, Calif. (Reuters) - Politics has not weaned Arnold Schwarzenegger (news - web sites) (news) from his superhero ways. While on vacation in Hawaii last week, the California governor said he found time to rescue a swimmer in danger of drowning.
Schwarzenegger said on Monday he was playing with his children on a Maui beach when he noticed a man struggling in the waves nearby -- about 300 or 400 yards offshore.
"I realized he was having trouble and I asked him if he was in trouble and he said he had cramps all over his body -- that he can't swim," Schwarzenegger told reporters at a news conference in the Los Angeles suburb of Burbank.
The "Terminator" star said he dragged the man ashore using a boogie board.
"I set him down on the beach then and told him to relax a little because he was so out of shape," the former Mr. Universe said. "He told me that for two years he hadn't done any exercise."
Schwarzenegger appeared on Monday at a Burbank Costco store to gather signatures as part of a statewide petition drive to qualify a ballot measure that would reform California's workers' compensation system.
"If I do not rescue workers' comp here, I rescue people in Hawaii," the governor joked. "It's one or the other."
