Yep. It looks pretty good, and it's cool that QT is paying to produce it here in the states.
God, I hope they don't dub it. This movie is fantastic, and dubbing could kill it.

No way will they dub it, when Quint produced the American release of Iron Monkey it was in its Manderin beauty ;).
I absolutely loved this American trailer! I've seen other low rez trailers of Hero but they didn't catch my attention like this one. I am simply stunned with the production in it.
Jet Li & Donnie Yen + Coolest trailer of 2004 = 8 bucks taken from my cheap arse.

If you guys actually can't wait, it should be pretty easy to find a dvd or vcd copy, this movie's been out in China for a couple years I think. I've seen it like three times over the course of the last year.
But yeah... it's a kickass movie.

I saw some other trailers that can be found online, and it doesn't look as good as the trailer before Kill Bill Vol. 2 was.

Yeah, most of the trailers i've seen online are grainy and have alot of dialouge. The one before KB was amazing. My local video store accually has the chinese import of the film but i'll wait till it hits theaters here.

I have seen the film, for i own it, but I thought it was a great trailer....the best of Hero that I've seen. I thought it empathsized too much on Jet Li, when Maggie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai are the best actors out there.....

God it feels good to hear that from someone else. Tony Leung has been my favorite Chinese actor for years now. He fucking owns any film by Wong Kar Wai especially. I think they pushed Jet Li in the trailer because he's pretty well known over here, while unfortunately most americans aren't familar with Maggie Cheung let alone Tony Leung.

I sinply do not get whats so great about this movie. It looked beautiful but it lacked all of the emotional reonance of CTHD. I was very dissapointed although my suitemate loved it.
5/10
Yeah, it was a great trailer. Except for the usual "one man will challenge an empire." If only the movie was as good as the trailer.

It LOOKS beautiful...but the more I think about it, the less I want to see it. I dunno...just too ripped off of Crouching Tiger, I guess.
Am I wrong? Anyone? Am I?

Am I wrong? Anyone? Am I?
;) you're wrong. Crouching Tiger and this film are entirely different beasts. They feel different, look different, have entirely different storylines and ways of telling the story as well.
Hero uses a Rashomon (or Run Lola Run) like technique, repeating the same story over again but with differences the second and third time around, etc. It uses color coding to distinguish between different flashbacks (hence the scenes where it's all red, the scenes where the screen is all blue, white, green, and grey).
Granted, you could say the music sort of sounds similar to Crouching Tiger - which is due to the fact that the composer is Tan Dun who did the music for Crouching Tiger as well, but it is really a very nice and original score.
And the storyline is entirely different. Think about it this way - I know people seem to think - oh since it's Chinese and it has martial arts in it, it must be the same as all the others - but that's really not true. It's like the differences between Gladiator and Troy and Lord of the Rings...at first glance they might seem similar but they're vastly different in their own ways and are about different cultures, etc. In the same way, Hero is about an entirely different dynasty from the one in Crouching Tiger (and Hero uses some basis in fact as the emperor in the film was a real person.
I have this on dvd and the first time I saw it I was a bit put off by it. Like I said, those looking for another Crouching Tiger will be disappointed. It's very different and an extremely unusual film. I thought it was decent the first time I watched it; it wasn't till the third or fourth viewing that I began to actually think of it as a great movie.
I still think right now that Crouching Tiger is better, but Hero is good in its own right. There is the occasional scene that seems almost laughable (Jet Li and splashing water in lake comes to mind), and the movie is a bit unevenly paced (perhaps due to the fact that 20 minutes of the movie was cut by Yimou because Miramax required the film to be under 100 minutes - this is true in China as well...the extended cut that Yimou considers the definitive cut has yet to be released in either China or here) but even with that, the movie is worth seeing just for the stunning cinematography (in my opinion, there are probably fewer than 10 movies that are equal to this in terms of visuals), not to mention the amazing technical work. I had some problems with the fights (disappointing considering the only legendary martial arts choreographer Yuen Wo Ping (The Matrix, Crouching Tiger, Kill Bill) was going to do them originally but couldn't fit it into his schedule - I can only imagine what that would've been like), which were solid but nothing compared to Crouching Tiger's. And the performances are fantastic all around. There are so many memorable scenes as well - the calligraphy school scene, the amazing leaf sequence (despite how little sense it made), etc. The only other problem with the film that I can think of is that I got tired of seeing the same people die over and over again (albeit in slightly different ways) heh but that's a minor complaint. Overall, you should at least experience this film once.
I'm probably going to go see it when it comes out in theatres again. I saw it at home, but I really can't wait to see it in theatres...my cousins have a projector and the surround sound set up perfectly and every scene was amazing...the earlier scene with Donnie Yen - you feel like rain is falling all around you, and the arrows scene - you can feel arrows whistling past you all around...it's amazing.
heres a paragraph from monkeypeaches from a while ago explaining about the whole mess with miramax cutting the film...
Tianjin Daily reports the release of the extended version in China has been pushed back to next month. Near 20 minutes will be added back to the 98-minute theatrical version, which has been and will be shown around the world. According to someone from Face Audio & Video Production Co. Ltd., what will be added back includes some subplots, fight scenes and dialogues which could help the audiences to better understand the story and the history background. This is actually not an extended version but the original cut director Zhang Yimou wanted us to see. But, MiramAxe asked Zhang Yimou to trim it to 98 minute long. As the result, some reviewers have criticized the film for having a weak story. Because of SARS, the extended footage has been locked up in Hong Kong ever since. As the theatrical version, the extended version will also be available on DVD-5, DVD-9 and VCD (No video tape).
btw, the extended edition ended up not coming out then and it still hasn't come out yet to my knowledge.
oh and one last thing: i gave it 9/10 after the 4th viewing (i've seen it 5 times now)...the first it was around 6.5/10, but that eventually rose on and on through each viewing

Except in this case it is actually true. The movie revolves around the man who founded the Chinese Empire around I think roughly 200 BC, the same empire that stood almost straight through to 1912AD. (With one akward break when most of China was taken over by the Mongols. But even then, they kept the empire running the same, but w/ new mgt.)
That's one reason this movie was so huge in China is b/c it is about arguably the most important political figure in the long history of China. It's also interesting to watch b/c the Zhang Yimou (the director) purposefully sets up some parallels between the emperor and China's other famous political uniter, Mao Zedong.
But either way, it's a pretty kickass movie.
And as someone else said, it's nothing like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Totally different stories, totally different directors, totally different styles. They're technically not even the same nationality. (Hero is made my Mainland China's Zhang Yimou; CTHD by Taiwan's Ang Lee). The other big difference between them is that, despite rumor to the contrary, CTHD was never well liked or recieved in China or it's brothers (HK and Taiwan), whereas Hero is one of their top grossing films of all time.
And that's the history lesson for the day.

Im not saying that Hero is the same as CTHD. Im just saying as far foreign asian marital arts film CTHD has Hero beaten down easily.
Hero is filled with beautiful pictures, and a great style but thats it. It is also unnecessarily confusing and completely hollow. There is no emotion in t here characters and what going on.
CTHD had emotion spectacle and gradeur. Hero doesnt even come close.

I saw this one and I thought it was great. I thought the supporting characters were very interesting. I didn't find the plot confusing at all but rather quite intriguing the way the whole thing unfolded. Add that with the beautiful images and the emotionally gripping ending and I think this is one of the better films I've seen so far this year. But that said I can see how some(such as Chinton) might not like it.
Lastly, the "whole man against the empire" thing is a bit misleading...I didn't get that impression watching the movie.
