The Curse of Katie Holmes

Before we get too hyped about the new Batman flick can I remind everyone that Katie Holmes is in it.

Every film Dawson's Ex has starred in has been a Grade A turkey; with the notable exception of The Ice Storm & that was probably only saved from the aforementioned curse because her role amounted to little more than a cameo.

She's poison I tell ya!

Go is a lame wannabee teen Pulp Fiction.

Wonder Boys is a meretricious ode to selling out.

The Gift is garbled hokum (although it has to be said in mitigation Katie has nice ya-yas)

The Ice Storm (as mentioned above) is the exception to the rule.

I haven't seen the other two but they're bound to be crap.

I'm against a love interest for Bruce Wayne in general. It's a waste of time. That is unless there's a sex scene that give this flick an NC-17.

Yeah it was WB's doing. They looked at Goyer and said it needed to be PG-13 and Bruce have a love interest.

I suppose it could have been worse IE "Oooh Batman in space..... oooh how about the jungle!??"

I say she's hot, I say she can act, and I say she's brunette which'll fit in a dark Batman environment. And there's nothing wrong with a love interest -- as long as it's dealt with in the right way. BATMAN RETURNS had Selina Kyle as a technical love interest, but it made it (bizarrely, I'll give you that) work.

I say she'll be just fine. And thinking that because all the movies she's been in before have been so-so doesn't mean anything -- especially if you consider (like I do) that THE ICE STORM, WONDER BOYS and PHONE BOOTH are good movies.

Abandon --> n/a

Go --> 9/10, in my top50
Disturbing Behavior --> 4/10
The Ice Storm --> 6/10 subject to change since I need to rewatch it


She hasn't made a bad film in this millenium. Plus, she has been the best thing of both of her sucky films. She's hot. And she can act. I try to see what's wrong with her, but I couldn't see it even if my cat was catching fire because of my unability for it. Sorry.

She is one of 2 actors/actresses from my city(the other being Jamie Farr). So I sometimes root for. That besides I don't think she's a bad actress at all. Her only blemish is being on that god awful no good piece of shit movie "Teaching Mrs. Tingle". You gotta pay the bills though.

Actually Katie chooses her projects very well in general and has been in many movies ranging from good to great. If you find movies like Go (9/10), Wonderboys (8/10), Phone Booth (7/10) and Gift (I've heard good things about it) weak, then that's your opinion... But not too many are going to agree with you.

I LOVE Katie Holmes. And I've liked/loved just about everything she's done.

If there is an acting weak link in this movie then it's Christian Bale. I'm sorry, but I'm not a big fan of his.

dude nooo, did you watched any of his movies? I think he's perfectly casted for Batman. I personally liked Equilibrium and American psycho. American Psycho not about the whole movie but especially for the acting skills of Bale.

He's a mixed bag with me. He was fine in Shaft and adequate in Reign of Fire but was terribly bland in Laurel Canyon and GODAWFUL in American Psycho (which IMO is a dispicable piece of shit! of a movie). I haven't seen Equilibrium. I may check it out though. The premise sounded intriguing enough.

C'mon, this just isn't fair. You can't completely write off an actress because you haven't liked her choices as far as the roles she has played. I, unlike you, have actually enjoyed a few of her films from the past five years, but I digress.

By your rationale, we probably shouldn't have expected too much from PULP FICTION because it stars that guy who once was a "sweathog" and used to be able to dance, but look at his movies lately.

She may be horrible.

She may be great.

We'll just have to wait and see how good the movie is.

Katie Holmes can't act (she just screeches her lines and makes weird facial expressions) and she's... not looking as good as she used to. She did carry Dawson's Creek, but that show was getting worse and worse with each season.

I did like the Gift, though. Despite that awful accent she had. Why must people butcher the southern accent...

Every Batman movie has had a love interest, and they've all "made it work" to a certain degree. Vicky Vale and Selina Kyle were far better than Chase Meridian and Poison Ivy/Batgirl (shudder). I think I'm giving Holmes the benefit of the doubt. I honestly don't think her presence will make the film worse.

I think she's quality. Not all of her films have been brilliant, but you can say that about a lot of actors. Doesn't mean everything she is going to be in is going to suck. She's hot and she was in Go! That's enough for me to worship her.

Abandon is my favorite Katie Holmes movie and she's fantastic in it. And from the posts on this thread so far, I can assume that nobody here has seen it. (That would explain its grosses.)

Abandon was just OK imo, great cinematography, great soundtrack, weird script... but Katie Holmes acted really really good, she CAN act, I also really liked her in Peaces of April and Go.

Overall, I liked Pieces of April but I thought Katie didn't quite pull off her character. I got the impression that a relatively straight-laced actress was trying to play a "fuck-up" and it ended up feeling fake. I think that maybe it had something to do with her wardrobe which, while there was nothing partucularly wrong with it, Katie didn't quite look "at home" in.

I know she can play a drastically different personality than her own (as she did in The Gift) but I just wasn't impressed by her in Pieces of April.

I saw Abandon in movie theaters and even own the DVD. It's a very good and Katie Holmes is excellent in it but I saw the ending coming a mile away. Still a very good, underrated movie.

I disagree with you about her in Pieces of April. Loved the movie and loved Katie's performance in it.

Abandon is probably her best performance in a movie, though my favorite role and performance of hers will always be Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek. I just LOVE that show!

She's a decent actress and she has gave very decent performances.

I was surprised that almost no one mencioned Pieces of April, in my opinion her best role to date, specially because she can handle very well the dramatic and the comic parts of the movie.

And of course.....her breast gave also a brilliant performance in The Gift.

Ok, granted Katie Holmes is a Dawson's Creek alumni and, granted, she doesn't exactly scream "chemistry" with the Dark Knight, but she has done some decent films in the past and this is just another to add to the roster.

Now, I'll be the first to admit that I had a few reservations upon hearing about Holmes being in this film, at one point exclaiming "WHAT THE FUDRUCKERS??!!??" (yes, i did say that) But, if she can pull out a smidge of that fire she had in Dawson's Creek(when she was a confused angry teen) and some of the sexiness she had in Go, then I think it could all work out.

And, I'm sure Chris Nolan won't just let her stumble around the set ruining things.

At least, I hope not.

I used to have the hugest crush on her in the late 90s and still liked her...until Tom sucked all the hottie power out of her. :(
