LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Tom Brokaw, the face of "NBC Nightly News" since 1983, will retire on Dec. 1, the network said on Monday.

The next evening, Brian Williams, who was named as Brokaw's successor in May 2002, is expected to take over as anchor and managing editor of the show. Williams joined NBC News in 1993.

Brokaw, a former host of NBC's "Today" show and White House correspondent who joined NBC News in 1966, had been expected to retire at some point following this November's U.S. presidential election.

A best-selling author of four books including 1998's "The Greatest Generation," Brokaw has also been seen by many as a potential candidate for elected office. Earlier this year, he denied any interest in running for vice president as a Democrat after a suggestion to that effect by columnist John Fund.

NBC is a unit of General Electric Co. .

That's too bad. Brokaw's a true class act and a part of a dying breed of newsmen. But Williams is pretty good.

Personally, I watch ABC News and Peter Jennings anyway.

Yeah, Brokaw's a good guy, but I guess even Tom Brokaw deserves a retirement at some point.

And 100% of my TV News comes from John Stewart and the Daily Show.

I watch Foxnews and at times Cnn for my news but I have liked Brokaw over the years. Williams seems like a great guy. Hope it works out for him. Time for Jennings and Rather to go...

I live in France, so I don't watch NBC, but even I've heard of Tom Brokaw. Shame he's retiring -- at least I've seen him do his thing a couple of times when I was on vacation in the US of A. ;)

I just don't see Sir Smirk-A-Lot succeeding on a nightly broadcast.

I wish him a long and peaceful retirement. He is truly one of a dying breed in news broadcasting.
