I'm sure you all have heard the news about The Gospel According To Janis, the new biopic of the late Janis Joplin starring pop singer Pink and directed by Penelope Spherris (Wayne's World). I'm sure all of you have mixed feelings about Pink portraying the late singer, but I have some good news for everyone.
I have seen Pink's screen test.
And it doesn't suck.
As a result of my mother's recent negotiations with a producer over an adaptation of a book of hers, I had the chance to meet the producer himself (a very nice man) back in February and it turns out that he was actually producing this movie. Before anyone had been cast, he had the screen test and showed it to me, wanting my opinion on it.
The scenes I saw totaled about 10 minutes. He told me it was filmed like an actual movie to make Pink feel more comfortable, so the scenes actually look complete. Pink even dons a brown wig to make herself look more like the famed singer. The scenes included two concert sequences (where Pink actually sounds a lot like Janis), Janis joining her band, and her first experience with drugs. Pink gave a very good performance in all of these scenes, and made me really anticipate seeing the complete product.
This could end up being a really great film.
