Brilliant news.
At least now we're spared Terry Gilliam & his blustering everything AND the kitchen sink approach.

Again, I disagree with your opinion.

I've been stoked that Aronofsky is at the helm. And like another schmoe here, I'm glad Gilliam isn't involved since it'd never get made, and wouldn't live up to its potential most likely

I second that. Is it just me, or does Ted Pikul seem to hate everything? Why is that?

I only hate crappy movies & crappy film directors.
When big ups are warranted I give 'em.
Like to Aronofsky on this thread.
No doubt Gilliam's Watchmen would have looked nice in the eye candy stakes but he's got no grip on narrative.
& Watchmen has got a killer story.

Granted, but you seem to say everything is crap. I haven't read one positive comment about a movie from you so far. I do enjoy reading the debates between you and Rain Dog though. They're fun. :D

I love Aranofsky & Giliam. I would have faith in both of them.
However, this will be impossible to do right in one movie. If it's not broken up into 2 or 3 films or done as a series w/ an R rating on a network such as HBO, I think it will fall short of honoring the epic source material.
I'd love to see William H. Macy as Roersharch.
I'm not really going to take this news just on AICNs say so, but I don't think this will do Aranofsky any good if it's true. Watchmen is unfilmable imo and and attempt to do so will likely end up misfiring as badly as other attempts to film similar works (Lynch's Dune, Cronenbergs Naked Lunch etc.)

I really don't see why some don't think it can be done with one movie. There really is no point where they can stop and leave it on a cliffhanger, like Kill Bill, and it isn't a story which requires many different countries and big epic locations and a storyline which requires multiple movies. We're not talking about Middle Earth here, it's mostly NYC, a little Mars, and a bit of Antarctica. If it's done like the comic, it can be divided into a three act structure.
******************COMIC SPOILERS***************
"Big" event which affects the characters and leads to the 2nd act:
Rorschach: Is set up and framed for Moloch's murder, caught by police.
Adrian Veidt: The assassination attempt.
Dr. Manhatten: His personal exile to Mars after the press conference.
Nite Owl: Rorschach's capture and plan to set him free.
Events from Act 2 that trigger 3rd act:
Rorschach/Nite Owl: Finding out Adrian is responsible for the murders.
Adrian: Don't know, he doesn't really appear all that much until the later issues.
Dr. Manhatten: Being convinced by Laurie that he should return and help.
I'm skipping a lot of story details I know, and one of the hard things is to introduce all the characters, establish relationships, and get the themes off the ground, but it is possible to adapt it to a 2-2 1/2 movie. If I read a little faster than normal, I can finish it in about that amount of time. There's a lot of themes, messages, and events that can't be translated to screen, due to the differences in the medium, but it can be done, and if what Moriarty says about Hayter's script is correct, he accomplished it.
