Taiwan Wants Jackie Chan Movie Banned

Fri Apr 23, 7:43 AM ET

TAIPEI, Taiwan - Jackie Chan (news)'s next movie should be banned in Taiwan because of the actor's remarks about last month's presidential election, a senior ruling party lawmaker said.

At a news conference in Shanghai last month, the action star called Taiwan's disputed election "the biggest joke in the world."

"We want to propose a motion at the legislature to ask the government to ban showings of Jackie Chan's new movie," Parris Chang, a senior member of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party, said Thursday.

Chan's latest Hollywood film, "Around the World in 80 Days," is set to open on the island in June. His other Hollywood films include "Shanghai Knights" and the "Rush Hour" movies.

President Chen Shui-bian narrowly won the March 20 vote, but opposition candidate Lien Chan claims the vote was marred by irregularities, though he's provided little proof.

The High Court is working out how to conduct a recount, tentatively scheduled for next month.

Chan, who is married to a Taiwanese actress, is a frequent visitor to the island, where he has appeared in commercials for humanitarian causes.

Well I suppose the banning would be understandable if it was the sequel to the medallion but do they have to be such asses? I mean Jackie was telling the truth...

I think they're doing Taiwan by not showing Chan's next movie. His take on "Around The World in 80 Days" looks awful. It, itself, looks like one big joke. I've felt bad for Jackie lately with his recent disappointing flicks. I don't think "80 Days" will be any better than "The Medallion" and that one with the magical suit.

Either way Jackie deserves better than Around the World in 80 Days and the Medallian... I dont think people realize how crazy good he is at martial arts.

He's also a cool MF.

" a progressive DEMOCRATIC party" wants to BAN a movie cause of an "opinion"?

Chan should slam them a second time and call them "Regressive"

If anything, he needs to be punished for "The Tuxedo" & "The Medallion"... ESPECIALLY "The Medallion"... :p

You're both wrong actually. Thai are people/things from Thailand which is down south of China kind of near Vietnam. Stuff from Taiwan is just referred to as Taiwanese.

And as silly as it looks, don't be to light about this election guys. It is a big fucking deal. And unlike our elections back in the state, people there actually really really care. Our 2000 presidential election had just over 50% voter turnout. This election in Taiwan had 98% voter turnout. My chinese film prof, who is Taiwanese, took a week's leave and flew back to Taiwan just to vote.

The people in power and who just got reellected, Chen, are acting like full independence from China is what they want. That would be cool, except China has said that if that happens, they absolutely promise to invade Taiwan. The guys running against them are much more moderate. And Chen won re-election by only 20,000 votes, but in the election over 300,000 votes were thrown out for reasons not entirely clear, which is why the opposition is so pissed about the election and why the country is going crazy.

And that's your history lesson for the day. :)

Isn't it hilarious how the biggest fucking dictatorships in the world just have to call themselves "People's Republic" or "Democratic Republic Of"?? How fucking stupid do these ignorant assholes think the rest of the world is? And as far as Jackie Chan's films being banned, censorship is still wrong no matter what nation it comes from. Fucking crybabies. Jackie kicks ass, in my book.
