View Full Version : Mel Gibson
He played a war hero in Braveheart, wich took place in the dark ages.
He played a war hero in The Patriot, wich took place in the American Revolutionary war.
He played a war hero in We Were Soldiers, wich took place during The Vietnam War.
Now all he has left is a movie were he's a war hero in the war against Osama Bin Laden/Saddam Hussein, and a movie where he's a war hero in the war against Terminators :D
Pointless, i know. But i had to say it.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS!!!!
In Braveheart, he was revenging his love and became a war hero.
In The Patriot, he was already a war hero and then revenged his sons.
In We Were Soldiers, we don't really know if he becomes a war hero, but retains the respect of his men and a photographer.
Subtle differences.

Yeah, he gets sort of type-cast into this role, but it's just because he's amazing at it. Braveheart is still one of the coolest movies ever made. I couldn't stand the Patriot, but I blame the writers and director, not Mel, and We Were Soldiers was definitely underrated.
In general, even though he is pretty crazy on the religious side of things, I like Mel. He's makes a great William Wallace, and the Lethal Weapon flicks are a blast too.

As a practicing Catholic myself, I think he is pretty sane...just wanted to add balance. ;)

Not really a hero, but he was definitely in the war. Not in any kind of leadership or heroic position.

Mel Gibson rules. Both as an actor and a director. Braveheart is my favorite movie of all time and The Passion of the Christ was excellent to. I have a lot of respect for him making the latter, as any movie that has a pro-religious or pro-christian theme is going to be attacked merciously. Mel had alot of guts to make that movie.

"Subtle differences"
As lampooned during that Simpsons episode Mel Gibson wouldn't know a subtle difference if it came up & hit him on the head with a shovel.
Thank God he's never made a film with Oliver Stone that's all I can say.
The combined mangling of history & all round over wroughtness would make their normal output seem mild in comparison.

And movies that are percieved as being anti religion or christianity (see Dogma) don't get attacked?
