Ok, it might have been done a million times, but oh well. Lets have at it again, eh?
HARD BOILED

I seriously concider this to be the best action film of all time. Many think that John Woo did better in the Killer but for pure action I think Hard Boiled takes the cake. A prime example of how gnarley this film truely is is a loooong take at the end that goes on for about two minutes while showcasing amazing stunts. Chow Yun-Fat rocks and John Woo owns the genre.

Hmmm...I have never really thought about that
Like I never really think while watching action films...
I'd say maybe,
Total Recall
X2
Face/Off

The Poseidon Adventure
I love the whole premise - the get to the bottom which is the new top, survival race thing. The flipping of the ship and the flooding of the main ballroom is amazing!

According to IMDB my favourite action film is The Return of the King, I personally do not classify this as action so I think I'd go with Gladiator.

I came here to write Aliens, but I think I have to agree with AP about Hard Boiled. And as he said, while Killer is a better movie movie-wise, Hard Boiled wins action-wise.

Agreed.
I consider Raiders more of an Adventure film. I like to differentiate between Action and Adventure films.

I'd call it a war movie. Essentially that's what it is.

Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings- movies are more adventure than action.
In that case, my pick is Starship Troopers.
Die Hard seems to be becoming the majority leader.

It seems I have started a winning trend for Die Hard! Like Indy said I differentiate Action and Adventure and Sci-Fi...which I consider some of these choices...

For pure action, I say The Rock. The perfect blend of action, drama, comedy, all rolled into one of the most beautifully shot films ever. Not to mention the best dialogue of all time.
"I'd take pleasure in guttin you... boy... I'd take pelasure in guttin you... BOY!"
"I meant it at the time."
"At the time, you said it seven and a half seconds ago."
"Well, gosh, kind of a lot's happened since then."
I actually like Face/Off better than The Rock, but The Rock has better action.
The Matrix
I don't see why EVERY movie doesn't have a helicopter-mounted chaingun scene...
