Anyone else here doing the RE:2 poster design contest? I think it's a cool idea..I was up at 5 a.m. working on something, and I kinda wanted an opinion (HONEST, but not brutal, please) on one I was working on (still not sure if I'm going to submit it). I wasn't sure where exactly to post this, so I thought I'd do it here.
http://david.dark-delusion.net/REposter1.jpg
I'd appreciate some feedback. :D I also think it'd be cool to see some other designs if anyone else is participating.
Peace!

Res.Evil 2 is my most anticipated movie of the year and I definitely want to submit a poster, but i dont hav a program I can use to splice the pics together. Anyone have a way to solve this problem?
As for your poster, I love the kickass logo over the zombies. The floating fading Milla head is cool looking as well, but I'm really not diggin the mirror, darker Milla face. Nice first effort though. ;)

Hey thanks for the comments. By the way, Photoshop is a great program *wink wink*..and the images are of both Milla and the Jill Valentine character ;) But thanks for the comments...you should definitely try Photoshop (you can get a demo at Adobe.com).

i like your poster quite a bit. the fade in to the lower pages is well done though I think the title block takes up a bit too much space on the poster which makes it look slightly unbalanced. that's a great shot you used for the lower half though; the entire poster has a really ominous look to it. the only other problem i had is just with the font used to write "Milla Jovovich". I dunno, but the font used seems akwardly out of place in comparison to the rest of the poster - it just looks too..."cheap" compared to the rest of the poster which looks more glossed over. it sorta stands out from the rest of the poster in a bad way. It might not be the font, but maybe whatever font you use you could jazz it up slightly, ie: put a bit of color in or emboss it a bit, put some shadows in the back or glow, etc...just anything that will make it look more "high quality"
but really the rest of the poster is very good.

I really appreciate the comments. It makes me feel good as an "amateur" designer. And I agree, the font does look kinda awkward now that I think about it...but thanks for the feedback. :)

Damn, nice job. I was going to post mine, but I think I better work on it a bit after seeing that :) I agree with the person above that the font for Milla's name needs to be different.
Great job though. Made me realize how much mine sucks.

Weapon X,
I did your shiznitz man but I think it may violate the rules, at least if you want it to be submitted for possible use as THE poster.
One of the rules is "No gun to camera"
So you may have to modify the poster a bit, mabye use the reverse of the bad guy so you don't see the gun.
I know less impressive, but you know that damn FCC, can't portray violence for a violent movie, go figure.
I may have to give it a shot as well.
I wonder where ak is? This would be right up his alley.
Out..............................................
Weapon X

The gun isn't quite pointing straight at the camera...it's sort of pointed downward. I have a feeling they'll let that one slide.
And besides, if they really didn't want posters that feature guns pointed right at the viewer, they fucking shouldn't have provided pictures of it! Not to mention, they say you can have a "maximum of 2 guns", and they have several pictures of Milla Jovovich with three or more guns strapped to her! WTF, I say!!

Crappy, but it's a start.:)
EDIT: One more: "Hell on Earth." :D
Still extra crappy.:)

If I were to make a poster for this movie, it would simply be a wide shot of all the damn zombies coming at the camera (Theres a shot like that, but its not very impressive). With a tagline that simply stated: "They're Coming"
This would probbaly just end up being a teeaser or something, and its seriously doubtful that the competition judges would announce this as a winner, even with a good shot, simply because of the lack of time put in and the simplistic design.
But, hey, I'm a sucker for those overly simplistic ideas.
Weapon X
05-15-2004, 02:42 AM
I've got four main ideas for a tagline, but I'm not too sure about any of them. Any way I go, I'm gonna put it in the black area next to Milla's face.
1. NOTHING TO FEAR BUT FEAR ITSELF
Visually, it looks the best in the space I've left for it, but it sounds like the tagline for a better, scarier movie...not that I'm predicting RE2 won't be good, but this sounds too classy for a ResEvil movie.
2. RUN. FIGHT. SURVIVE.
Simple and to the point, yes, but too generic maybe?
3. NOWHERE TO RUN. EVERYTHING TO FEAR.
Same reasons as number 2.
4. SEE NO EVIL. HEAR NO EVIL. SURVIVE NO EVIL. (with each "no" crossed out)
It fills the space nicely in the same way number 1 does, but somehow I just don't like the "flow" of it...Maybe because I'm using the word "evil" in the slogan and it's in the movie's title as well. I dunno.
My only other ideas are "KnoW fear" (the words "no fear" with the K and W scratched in), which was the tagline of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, or "Evil is only a word, reality is much worse", which is a near word-for-word quote from the movie Event Horizon. And I'm really trying to go for something original here, just to set my entry apart from all the others, y'know?
As you can see, I'm investing WAY TOO FUCKING MUCH into this. :D

That's really good.
Do you work professionally as a graphical designer? If not, you shouldn't have much trouble getting work. Unless this is a one-off. But it's so well made all around, that I would imagine your other work is of good quality as well.

Hey adamjohnson, I agree with you. I love me a good teaser poster. Nothing beats em.
Below is a teaser I made for RE2. I am going to submit it anyhow, its not like my shit is going to beat Weapon X's :D You crushed my dreams Weapon X, I hope you have trouble sleeping at night :p
The one below it, I just added Milla in there, I am sure they want her mug on there somehow. But I like the one without her better.

I have my REAL entry one I am going to submit, but it aint quite polished yet so Im not gonna post it just yet. Its not snazzy like Weapons, but it looks like a DVD cover that everyone bitches about :p So, I am submitting it cause it might win because they will say "That looks like every other dvd cover, lets take it"

Hows this for a tag-line, Weapon X? I'm using it for my poster but I aint gonna submit mine because I'm only doing mine for fun and nothing more:
Tag line - "The End is Here", it makes sense in a way because its the "Apocalypse" (or meant to be).
Great poster BTW.

My (crappy) taglines.....
"The virus is out"
"They tried to stop it. They failed."
You can always go for the tacky "This is no game"
"Nowhere to run to baby. Nowhere to hide to.." ;)
"It has begun"
"If you can't beat them, shoot them"
"Regenerate your life"
There's more but I won't make you suffer anymore :)

As far as i'm concerned , the contest is over . Although i wish you could have found more room for Sienna Guillory , and maybe have the little Ashford girl in there too ( even though i think the kid in danger thing is against the rules ) .
Even if they choose someone else's , and they would be crazy if they did , this is the image i'll always remember when i think of the RE 2 poster .
Snowboy , i have to say you tried , and your poster is good , but X Man really nailed it big time .

Hello Fellow Shmoes! Just wanted some feedback on this concept. It's not completley done, and I still need a tagline. But anyway.....
And while I'm at it how do I actually put the picture in my message?

Not bad but change the slightly cheesy blood behind the "Apocalypse" and make it smoother, it's too pixeled. I'd also re-think the squares background. Pretty damn good though.
Thanks for the feedback. I know this picture looks pixely, but thats just from resizing it. Its really crystal clear.

Nice job Weapon X. I've submitted my two posters already, so I hope at least one makes the finals. I really need that cash to help pay for school, but I guess the odds aren't that favorable. I guess it's more likely than winning the lottery, huh? Nice job though. How did you get that glass effect? I imagine that you just had a picture of glass, and used that, because if not, that is a really complicated filter. Nice.
Oh, and I'll post both my posters here, but I'd like to wait for the finalists to be announced first. Not that I don't trust anyone here, I'd just feel safer at night if I knew that my ideas were protected. If no one knows what they look like, there's no way they can be tempted to copy them...not that I'm saying they're worth copying or anything.
Cheers.

Well, because anything you use that the website didn't provide had to be something you created or owned yourself, I couldn't just take a picture of broken glass off the internet and use it. So what I did was, I tore off pieces of a clear plastic bag, scanned it, rearranged it, scanned it again, etc. Then I took bits and pieces from the scanned images arranged them on the page to look like the broken glass. A lot of trial of error, as you can imagine.

Weapon X,
I am new to all this forum stuff but would like to give a shout out to ya, and say that I still think your submission is by far the most original...
I got some feedback on mine but I think folks are still amazed by what you conjured up. I read how you got the glass effect---very cool. Simple.
Go get a job working for a promotion/marketing firm in the biz. You would rock!
Heh, what was the final resolution on using the image of "Nemesis"
Did you get a friend to pose for it, or, what?
I suggest that you develop a poster series, in the same vein that X-Men (20th) and Pirates O.T.C.has, not a new concept, but basically backtracking your work as if you had designed it that way....
Teaser; One Sheet A, One Sheet B, Regular, Special Edition (kidding);
Special Anderson Director's Cut (really kidding)
btw... please check out my submission.

..I'm pitching "Horror Regenerates 09.10.04" as a tag line. I think more text could be negative. It starts to give away too much.
I would doubt very much that Milla's name has the household drawing power that we would give her credit for, but definitely a face that men have seen before, somewhere? Maybe the recent make-up commericial!
Fans will go, but it's about going beyond them to get new audience.
that was my reason for keeping her name minimal.
Anyway, did anyone see the ad that ran in the new issue of PLAY? I think the
awareness factor is about to kick in to high gear.
So...goodluck Weapon X, good luck to all, it's been fun.
Till we attempt again for some other feature.
Please give me some feedback if you got time.

..I'm pitching "Horror Regenerates 09.10.04" as a tag line. I think more text could be negative.
Yours looks really good. I like the vertical composition, and the blurring effect on the right side. The tagline is cool, but the text could be a little larger, and the credit text is almost impossible to read. But you've got a great layout, I think.

I agree , Mearl's poster is looking great , very simplistic but very effective . It conveys just the right amount of mystery , but also let's you know what to expect , to a certain extent . It really captures the spirit of the the film , at least the way i imagine it , and i like how you only hint at the Nemesis , instead of showing him in his entirety , it's nice to keep that aspect a surprise for the people who have no idea what he looks like .
Now , my only prob with Weapon and Mearl's images so far are the exclusion of one of the most prominent characters in this RE sequel , Jill Valentine , she has to be on the poster somewhere , it's a must . Her role is probably even more important than Alice's ( even though the princess has to get top billing ) , so i wish both of you would have found some room on your designs for her . I'll go further , the little Ashford girl should be on the poster also , since all three of them look to be the character focal point of RE 2 .
Other than that , i like all the posters so far , but Weap's and Mearl's are no doubt in the top two , out of the ones i've seen so far on this site . And , yes , the tagline on Mearl's poster is perfect .
Great job , both of you , and Weap , with that talent , i doubt not going to a graphic design school will slow you down , freak em' , it looks like you already have the skill , talent , creativity , and motivation to succeed without it .

Thanks dellamorte dellamore,
you had some great thoughts...it's funny how you thought that Jill Valentine should play a bigger role...I actually created a spec with her in it. Please check below. I since have retired that image and thought that the studio and fans would prefer more Alice. It's so hard to find a balance, especially when I don't know what the research says this film is skuing to.
Weapon X ,
thanks for answering back. I just prefer to take advantage of the 41' heigth of a poster. True that the credits are hard to read, but that's do to the fact that I had to go from a 300 DPI .psd to a 112 KB .jpg (that sucks) Believe me, it's sharp as a tack.
I tried to link up to your examples but had a hard time finding them, is there a link I'm missing or is hard to read once I'm at the site.
How do I have my .jpg to show up here full screen, I like that yours already appears?

Mearl's and Weapon X's posters rock so much amount of ass!
X's has that cool, complex look that I can stare at for hou..well, minutes. Seriously it's one of the best posters I've seen of any movie for a while.
Mearl's has the slick, simple look on both of them. Good job on having Jill in one of them, after all she probably is one of the more important characters of the movie.
Both taglines are great, original & cool.
IMO, the studio is more likely to go with X's poster, but like I said, both of'em really are great.
I'm completely clueless about this BTW, so can someone tell me, when will the studio announce the winner?

I see no likeness between the two.
Except that if you're talking about them being kinda dark, then alot of posters are rip-offs.
IT's easy to say the poster that was on Joblo's main page is the best because it was made by the studio, but we're talking about a fan-made posters here, wich are alot harder to make by only one person.
I like the one on the main page but seriously X's is better if I compare the two IMO

The only thing bothering me is that you try to make it look like it's a fake marketing hoax or something yet you put the title there. There's no point to it since you're trying to fool the people watching.
I would like one where it's one of those holographic type posters where one picture is a picture of the woman in the Regenerate commercial and it has the Regenerate logo below her with an asterisk on it. Then the next picture has her in "zombie" form and it says "*some side effects may occur" and then the whole title and credits. But that's just me. :)

I wasn't going to post these until after I knew whether or not that I was a finalist. Alas, July 16 has come and gone, and I didn't get notified, so I guess my posters weren't good enough to make the cut. Here are my two posters.
POSTER 1: I was going for the whole fear angle, and Milla looks scared as hell in this pic, if you ask me. I placed that pic on it's side (she was lying down). I did a lot of painting in shadows and such and placed Nemisis behind Jill. There's definitely some diffusion going on. With all the contrast between spots of light and total darkness, it really seemed to help. I like it.
http://img39.exs.cx/img39/4070/RE_poster5_copy.jpg
POSTER 2: My favorite of the two. I really like how it has the bullet hole at the center, right above Nemesis, and everything goes from there. There are so many filters used in this that it isn't even funny. I really thought this one had a chance, and I was really pissed when I saw the new cover to the RESIDENT EVIL DVD (after I entered this in the contest) because the color schemes match, and I figured that probably hurt my chances. I built that whole stained glass background out of one small image. And I painted those zombies at the bottom for about three days alone. They are the same 3 zombies, but I think I gave each one a little personality of its own. And I like how they're sort of rising through the mist. Oh well, enjoy and feel free to comment, please.
http://img39.exs.cx/img39/5773/RE_poster7_copy1.jpg
I thought it was important to make each poster unique, its own design, where it stood out from the other. And I think I achieved that.

Yes. Yes I can.
The blue one is NICE. Very good job. The green one is pretty good, especially the look of the title, but the crazy colours around the green glass shards can make it confusing to look at.
Hmmm. For the green one, having the tagline right in the directed focus and in huge letters is also very distracting, because it makes it seem as though it's the center of attention.
But overall, both are very well done.

Ah, this is such bullshit. This is the same goddamn thing they did last time: four weak entries and only one that looks like someone put some actual legitimate effort into it. Granted, these entire are a few steps better than the ones they chose for the first contest, but truth be told, from all the entries I saw, and I can name ten more deserving entries for every one of these official "finalists". I mean, come on! The third one is just a headshot of Milla colored blue with a static filter over it; if Sony is impressed by that, maybe I should apply for a job there...I'll be running the place inside of a week. ;)
But if I vote on any of them, it'll definitely be that first one. That at least looks creative.

I'm not even going to vote , those are some of the most bland and uninspired pieces of garbage i've ever seen . All of them look like they are posters or dvd covers for some cheap ass Full Moon entertainment STV effort , wow , horrible . Could it be that Sony doesn't want to make their own art department look bad with entries that could actually compete with them or maybe even surpass what they can do ?
Damn , the only one that has anything at all going for it is the last one , but it still looks like a poster for Highlander or Xena , and that's not the aura i want conveyed for a film such as this . Plus , have all those people forgotten that Sienna Guillory is in this thing , come on already , she is one of the most important characters , she should be as prominent as Milla , some of them didn't even bother to put her on there at all , godawful . And where the hell is the tagline on some of them ?
Oh well , i still have Weapon's image on my desktop , that's the one that nailed it , although i wish SG was in there somewhere , that's my only prob with it . Damn , there were so many excellent posters , and these are the finalists , these judges have their head up their arses . Hope the director's eye for talent and creativity is much keener than the bufoons that were in charge of this contest .

Weapon X's fucking OWNS! I like the use of the shattered glass and most importantly, the big kahuna, the head honcho, the top dog...NEMESIS! He HAS to be on the poster. He just has to. If not, it's like taking the shark off the poster of Jaws or Ahnuld off the poster of The Terminator. He doesn't have to be seen in full view, but his presence must be felt.
Fuck Milla (both figuratively and literally...heheheh...). Her ridiculous character shouldn't even be in these movies.

Weapon, i could do what you did in my sleep, i make graphics and webpages for a living.
Your "glass effect' was just the plastic wrap filter on elements and/or photoshop. Then you just overlayed some picks on top of others, and decided it was the best poster out there. You have a lot of effects, but not the right layout for something to go into print, and for that matter, nationwide print. Look at your typography.
Sure you would have to have 3-5 months experience to do what you did, but that is nothing to get all sore about.

Damn, those posters fucking suck, lol. Even mine were better, HA HA!!!
That blue one is pathetic, it looks like it shoudl be for The Lawnmower Man.
The one with the big grey Zombie face is cool, but its for the wrong movie, I think they ment to enter into The Ring 2 poster contest :D
The one with all the little pics is lame. I could do that with my left ass cheek in my sleep. Plus, it doesnt even look good.
The blue milla one, BARF!!!! Look at the green text!!! HAHAHAHA, how fucking ugly is that shit?
And the last one is too Photoshop-y. It looks good except that lame background with the faded zombie dudes. Would have been cool if that was just all white. But it still sucks to 90% of the other posters I have seen.

I think the problem here is that X's isnt teaser-ish enough. I know that if I were making the teaser it would most likely be a single image (most likely, Milla standing in a VERY wide shot, with her shotgun cocked, and completely surrounded by thousands of zombies, all of them keeping their distance from her so that there is a sort of 20 foot radius of free space all around her)
I really like the gray one. And the last one that was posted is SORT OF like how I imagined it.
X's is badass. Ill say that again. His is BADASS. But I think it might have too much going on. I mena look at them: single image. Even the one with all the little pictures is basically just one big Milla pic (even though its "fancier").
But I like the gray one the best. It has no definitive character featured, which is perfect for a teaser!!
They should have done a teaser contest, and an official poster contest. If they had done that one I'm pretty sure X's would whipped ass. (Altho it was DQ'ed, which sucks)

I really like how the "artist" has created the intricate detail around the hand especially. Good show guys!

Yea, this poster contest was kind of a bummer indeed. I hope when Silent Hill comes out, they do the same thing. These were my 3 submissions.

I really like that bottom one. I think that conveys the overall feel of the new trailer, the RE brand and plays a little off the website content. Nice Job!

when i saw the final ones the first thought in my mind was...WTF!
the choices are/were horrific...it almost makes me think they picked the worst shite they could find and then left the one that they wanted (the one that one) so that people had no choice for which to vote for.
seriously, there were many, many better posters even just in this thread and there's no way those shitty posters that were finalists could've made it past.

Yes, I totally agree. If you all remember from 1.5 years ago, the same thing happened. 4 mediocre posters and one really decent one (compared to the others). Who wouldn't vote for the cool one? I wish Jo here would put something on the homepage with a brief article about the incident and who he thinks some of the finalists should be. It's really a disgrace to the design community and Hollywood. I face coming out of a brick wall in swooping fashion. Come on. That says nothing about the movie, relates nothing about the trailer or the franchise. As well as the other two that are just bad Photoshop plug-ins. That DeScreen Interlace effect is so, well, old. And to pick two that had the same effect, except one had thinner lines and the other had thicker lines. The one with the 2 katana swords is just plain awfull for a big Hollywood Action film, compared with what the public is seeing today in theaters. So, I have said my peace ... for now.

Oh please! THAT one won!? *sigh* I think every serious entry posted in this thread are better than that one. For one, all of johngo's entries are way better (except the tagline).
Oh well . . . too bad Weapon's didn't win. 'twas the best.

I dunno, man...johngo's are making me pretty jealous. That last one sort of has a "The World Is Not Enough" feel to it that I like.
You see? There WERE entries better than mine that got pissed on!

I'm thinking Johngo has hit it on the head , and he / she was savvy enough to include some of the main characters . I'm thinking this is one of the best , it does it for me . I like how it conveys the " fellowship " and the struggle that they will all face , but you have to have the little Ashford girl in there also , she will play a big part in the proceedings , i'm guessing . That's really my only complaint .
