Here are Traver's lists for best films of the year (most of these are current releases)... any comments are welcome!

Hollywood Top Ten:

1. Fellowship of the Ring: "For the first film in his Lord of the Rings trilogy, Peter Jackson combines mythic power, personal storytelling and breathless Indiana Jones adventure to create a film that is both intimate, and epic, Damn, he's good."

2. Ali: "Michael Mann and Will Smith transcend biopic cliché's to punch their way to the bruised heart of a hero. Extraordinary."

3. The Royal Tenenbaums: "A Hurting, healing comedy about the wounds inflicted by family; confirms Wes Anderson as a world-class talent."

4. Shrek: "An ogre in love, and a new peak in animation."

5. Vanilla Sky: "Cameron Crowe directs Tom Cruise in a psychosexual thriller that busts more than a few molds."

6. Moulin Rouge: "A musical that pushes so hard it mauls you, but Aussie Baz Luhrmann creates visual wonders."

7. Black Hawk Down - " The script's speechifying can't stop Ridley Scott. The director of 'Gladiator' and 'Hannibal' brings documentary realism to a war film that salutes the soldiers felled in a botched 1993 U.S. operation in Somalia."

8. A Beautiful Mind: "Russell Crowe's searing portrait of a schizophrenic never flinches, even when Ron Howard softens the blow.

9. A.I. - Steven Spielberg tries to finish something Stanley Kubrick started. The result is a sci-fi shambles that true film fans will heatedly discuss for ages.

10. Ocean's Eleven: "Steven Soderbergh turns a B-movie heist into a class-A exercise in coolness.

INDIE TOP TEN

1. Memento: "A thriller that runs in reverse allows director Christpher Nolan, 31, to step forward with the year's most dazzling feat of cinematic originality."

2. Mulholland Drive: "Life is but an L.A. dream for David Lynch, who dreams like no one else."

3. Waking Life: "Richard Linklater's animated riff on the meaning of life goes places that "Shrek" and "Monsters, Inc." never imagined."

4. Ghost World: "Steve Buscemi as a love object for teen misfit Thora Birch is just one reason why this Terry Zwigoff film of Daniel Clowes' underground comic book cuts deep."

5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch: "Songs, a sex change and a rock tour de force for writer, director and star John Cameron Mitchell."

6. Sexy Beast: "A blazing Ben Kingsley is scarier than any Soprano-stylish gangster tale."

7.In the Bedroom: "Actor turned director Todd Field brings lyrical grace to a revenge drama powered by brilliant turns by Sissy Spacek and Tom Wilkinson.

8. The Man Who Wasn't There: "The Coen brothers do film noir set in a barber shop and, o brother, did it come out looking good."

9. Gosford Park: "Playing the game of humor and homicide by his own rules, Robert Altman throws a posh party with a cast of Brit legends and serves up a full-course acting feast."

10. Amelie - "A love letter to Paris, movies and luminous new star Audrey Tautou from Jean-Pierre Jeunet."

I think it's a punkass move on his part to divide this list into "Hollywood" and "Indie". Hey, you bastard...the last time I checked...they were all movies!!! http://www.joblo.com/ubb/wink.gif

Feels like a lazy person's way of including many of his favorites in a list of only 10 (make it 20). Not hip, Travers...(not that he should give a shit what I think, but there you have it)...

heh I completely agree with you on this one JoBlo! It's much eaiser to make a top 20 list than a top 10 list http://www.joblo.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Unless he really went for a change of pace this year, I'm sure he still did an overall Top 10 as well (although in recent years he has had a bit of an elitist view on movies, bashing the majors- not always wrongfully- and praising the indie "rebels"). He's actually been doing separate lists of Hollywood and Indie flicks for a few years (since '98 if I recall), but he's also done Top 10s as well. My prediction for an overall top 10 for him would probably include:

1. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
2. Memento
3. Mulholland Drive
4. Ali
5. Waking Life
6. The Royal Tennenbaums
7. Ghost World
8. Hedwig and the Angry Inch
9. Sexy Beast
10. In the Bedroom

totemrepublic- where did you get his lists? Is the new issue out?

Peter Travers is one of my least favorite reviewers out there, his top ten lists rarely completely follow his reviews....He went on how Hedwig And The Angry Inch is the best film of the year....while it only placed 5th on his Indie List..........

As for my opinion on the films, here are my comments:

Hollywood Top Ten:
1. "Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring": Haven't seen it, but I can't wait too.
2. "Ali": Haven't seen it.
3. "The Royal Tenenbaums": Haven't seen it.
4. "Shrek": Grade- A+; Barely beats "Monsters Inc." as the animated escapism of the year...and at the Oscars. The competition between Pixar and "Shrek's" PDI animation house will rage for years to come.
5. "Vanilla Sky": Haven't seen it.
6. "Moulin Rouge": Grade- C; All style, no substance. Overrated, overcooked melodrama from visual wizard Baz Luhrmann.
7. "Black Hawk Down": Haven't seen it.
8. "A Beautiful Mind": Haven't seen it.
9. "A.I. Artificial Intelligence": Grade- A+; For my money, the movie of the year. If any movie from Y2K1 could take home Oscar, this would be my choice. One of Spielberg's richest films.
10. "Ocean's Eleven": Haven't seen it, and I can't wait to either.

INDIE TOP TEN
1. "Memento": Grade- A+; A new classic thriller in the vein of "Pulp Fiction" and "The Usual Suspects." Guy Pearce's performance is a tour de force.
2. "Mulholland Drive": Grade- A+; David Lynch finds a way to control his bizzare style after the incomprehensible "Lost Highway," and comes up with a gripping, erotic film noir. Star Naomi Watts is the find of the year.
3. "Waking Life": Grade- A+; Richard Linklater manages a thought-provoking, mind-bending conversation piece on the meaning of life that is profound minus pretention. A one-of-a-kind exercise in animation.
4. "Ghost World": Grade- A+; A haunting and rich graphic novel adaptation about social outcasts with memorable turns by Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi.
5. "Hedwig and the Angry Inch": Grade- B-; Another overrated movie musical, this one based on an off-Broadway musical. The story just isn't that interesting.
6. "Sexy Beast": Grade- C+; Ben Kingsley's fantastic, but the story is just another limp, cliched heist plot.
7. "In the Bedroom": Haven't seen it.
8. "The Man Who Wasn't There": Grade- B+; A tad pretentious for the Coens, but Billy Bob is terrific, and the film looks great.
9. "Gosford Park": Haven't seen it.
10. "Amelie": Haven't seen it.

A few words. I don't like movies that maul me. So for all its inventiveness, MOULIN ROUGE left me cold and...bruised. The first two-thirds of A.I. qualifies as one of the year's best, the last third one of the year's worst. I admired MEMENTO, but I couldn't warm up to it. The quirky GHOST WORLD was good for a few smiles. I would've liked SEXY BEAST a lot more had I understood a word the characters were saying. THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE looked great and Billy Bob Thornton looked right, but there was really nothing else there. The year's most overrated film may be AMELIE, a relentlessly stupid film masquerading as cute and lovable. As for the rest, I haven't seen them.
