I have never posted a thread before but this is a topic that has been haunting my friends and I for acouple weeks now. Trying to think of movies where are the end the bad guys are with out a doubt the winners. The only ones we could really come up with were.
Invasion Of the Body Snatchers.
Phantasm (the first one gives that idea)
Fallen
and there were a few more that came to mind that I can't remember right now. But please help me out with this.

Well Night of the living dead is like a tie. It's great when the bad guys win. It gives a movie a darker sense.

MacReady really had a death wish by the end of the film, and I really don't totally believe he got all of the aliens.

Ok, I'm about to shock some of you now, but the movie I'm about to state is, IMO, one of the BEST ENDINGS in HORROR MOVIE HISTORY!!! (SPOILER):
HALLOWEEN 3: SEASON OF THE WITCH
I'm sorry but I get chills down my spine EVERY fucking time. He's ranting down the phone telling the tv station to "STOP IT!!", and they stop all of the channels except for one. It ends like that with him screaming at them to stop it, but we're left wondering whether or not they do. KICK ASS!!!
Don't care what anyone says. I'm proud of that ending. :)

Yes indeed.
The Ugly is the second best movie coming from New Zealand, the first being Next Of Kin (aka Return To Monclare)

Now I know it isn't exactly "Horror" but on some DvDs of the musical "Little Shop of Horrors" they show the original ending in which the plant eats seymour and his bride and proceeds to take over the world. Pretty bad ass cept it's in black in white.
-Remember, whatever you do, DON"T FEED THE PLANTS!!!

That alternate ending was on the original print of the DVD, but then it was yanked off for legal reasons.
Sucks, I never got to see it. So they actually show Audrey II in giant size?
P.S. - The original black & white "Little Shop Of Horrors" has a downbeat (though tounge-in-cheek) ending.

Yeah, the first "Omen" flicks have bleak endings. The first one's was surprising and effective, but the sequel's end was more hokey and obvious.

Oh THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT's ending always does it for me too.
I didn't mention PHANTASM because I felt that everybody would be thinking that. But I feel that is THE BEST ENDING ever, in horror movie history.

****SPOILERS for GINGER SNAPS****
I think this is a strange case. On one hand, our heroine Ginger dies. BUT, so does the werewolf inside of her. In a way, she was both heroine and villainess. So it's kind of a mixed ending.
****END SPOILERS****
And I must mention Resident Evil. Apocalyptic nihilism at its finest.

you gotta give credit to a major release that has the guts to end that way.
has anybody mentioned "dead and buried" yet? a definite downer at the end.

The last shot of the movie is Bridgette (who is now infected) crying over the dead body of her sister. To me, that`s 'downbeat'.
