View Full Version : (YES!) Shock Waves

A bunch of American tourists get stranded on a desert island where a grizzled ex SS officer(played by Peter Cushing) lives with his pack of underwater zombie mutant baddass killing machines...
Anyvane see this? Muuuucho atmosphere and a lot of really likable characters.. It sported that ever-cool seventies schlocky feel (think Hill Have Eyes) and I got a huuuuuge kick out of it.

Hey Romero, I hear this is supposed to be the best zombie nazi movie out there. I hope its better then the horrible zombie lake. Ive been this close to actually buying Shockwaves.
Are the zombies decent looking? How did Cushing do on this one? Good? Or was he just reading through the lines to get a paycheck?

I don't think that Cushing has ever just "read through his lines," but it's especially true in this case. Cushing does an admiral job, although cherish the time he is there, and the rest of the cast does pretty well.
There's a lot of atmosphere, but I thought the stalk sequences were too long and the kills were bland; however, Wiederhorn has created a decent flick that is worth watching for horror fans. And in a day when most movies don't warrant a first viewing, the day is good to check out Shockwaves.

Space - I liked Cushing in this, but its definitely out of his hayday. His presence is always felt, though and I got a kick out of his German accent.
and check this thing out. I avoided Zombie Lake like a zombie Plague, so I couldn't really judge.. this is a really great zombie flick, though.
The effects were pretty minimalistic and I can totally see where Gluttony is coming from. I got a kick out of the chase sequences (it was all about the mud barrier scene!), though and I didn't mind the lack of gore. Genuinely creepy stuff.

Shock Waves is good stuff. Cushing's role is minor, but needless to say, he commands your attention. The rest of the cast is just as focused. I especially dug John Carradine and Brooke Adams (that yellow bikini...oh, that yellow bikini). The atmosphere is cuffed with dread, the Death Corps is cool, and the tension is palpable. Any "Nazi zombie" flick is worth at least one viewing. It could have benefited from moderate bloodletting, but I won't dwell on the negatives.
How is Oasis of the Zombies?

Without a doubt one of my favorite films from the 70's, It is available on DVD thanks to Blue Underground. Although slow at times this creepy little flick still holds up years later. As far as Oasis of the Zombies goes, I would avoid this one! Shock Waves is the better of the two, imho. Oasis does have a sense of style and the zombies are pretty cool looking, but Oasis suffers from bad pacing and poor Directing by Jesus Franco and Marius Lesoeur. Shock waves is worth your time if your a fan of zombie films, especially Nazi Zombies! I think what makes this thing interesting is that there is some shroud irony involved. If you're a history buff, you will find that Hitler was into the occult! The Nazi's were always interested in human experimentation, the idea of creating "Super Soldiers" is not that far from truth!
Shock Waves is recommended late night viewing for sure!
Note: I agree with the count regarding Brooke Adams, she is a forgotten scream queen! I had such a crush on her, the dark hair and those big beautiful eyes...grrrr! Brooke appeared in alot of genre films back in the day! :D
By the way count love that avatar from "A.P.E" cool shit!

Shock Waves I find very likable. Of course the 'extended cameos' of Carradine and Cushing are welcome, and Brooke Adams is very easy on the eyes. I like the whole 'Nazi supersoldier zombies resurrected from the watery grave' plot. On a tropical island no less. But being the strange person that I can be, my highlight for this one is Captain John Carradine saying 'old fart'.... priceless.

Thanx for your review on Oasis of the Zombies, I almost bought that one a while back! After having read what you had to say Im glad I didnt! It seems to be on par with Zombie Lake which was also directed by Franco if Im not mistaken.
Hey about that whole thing about Nazis dabbling in the occult, its true! This subject fascinates me, which is why I always look forward to films dealing with such subject manner. Stuff like Hellboy, the upcoming Constantine or video games like Return to Castle Wolfenstein which Im playing right now. That games is actually a really decent first person shooter, its all about Hitler making this army of zombie super soldiers. Im sure all these stories about Hitler and the occult are sprinkled with fantasy, exagerations and myth here and there, but I just find it fascinating.

No problem spacemonkey, Oasis and Lake are both pretty dreadful. While were on the subject, I do find human history facinating. I mean the idea that at one point in time, the Nazis were so close to global domination. Hitler was mad no doubt, but the man DID have a major interest in the subject of the occult! wether how much was exagerated, I dont know. There are books out there regarding this topic.

Yeah, I was doing some reading on the subject and found out that he was in search of "the spear of longinus" which supposedly was the spear that a roman soldier plunged into Jesus's chest while he was being crucified. It is said that whoever posses it can dominate the world, so I guess that Hitler searching for this spear makes a heck of a lot of sense when you look at his original intent on global domination.
I love movies that have been influenced by this subject matter. Films like Oasis of the Zombies, Zombie Lake, and Shockwaves. Heck even Raiders of the Lost Ark was influenced by this. Though some of those movies may be bad, I find it interesting how that theme has infiltrated itself into cinema, movies and video games.
But to tell you the truth, I think they can still make one really really good movie about this subject. Go deeper into Hitlers obsession with the occult. I dont think this subject has been completely exploited which is why I find anything related to it very interesting.

Romero, did you not find the film a tad slow?

^
Not really, no.. it seemed much more action oriented than zombie flicks being made in that day, which is cool. Also, the acting in this is FAR better than most of its contemporaries.
Some of the death scenes were uber predictable, though and I have NO idea how the other crew members discovered how to kill the zombies, when Brooke was all by her lonesome when she found out... otherwise, no complaints.
Did you find it slow?

Yet another so called "classic" from the 70s that I had read about for years..finally on dvd..rented, saw, yawned, and was yet again disapointed by another "cult classic" :o

Check out The Awful Dr. Orlof. Franco gave it a glossy veneer, and the B&W cinematography is gorgeous. I slept through most of it, but I can't fault the film itself (I need to stop watching movies late at night).
Regarding Shock Waves' pacing, it's somewhat lackadaisical. It comes with the territory, though. '70s horror isn't exactly peppy.

hehehe, peppy..
And Franco aint all that bad.. IMO, the reason why he gets such a wrap is because there are so many badddd re-edits of his flicks. They're all just incomplete.

Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to see this one yet, but I've heard from numerous sources that the film drags on a bit.
