With the summer season just around the corner, I thought a thread where we could post our favorite surf songs would be appropriate for those looking to make a cool compilation for the beach this summer.

I like The Beach Boys but their surf songs never really did it for me (Surfin' Safari, Surfin' U.S.A., Surfer Girl).

My all-time favorite would be Pipeline by The Chantays followed by Surfin' Bird by The Trashmen.

Of course, Misirlou by Dick Dale & His Del-Tones is an all-time classic.

La La La La La, by the Blendells. It was on Reprise, I'd say around 64'. SUCH a cool fucking song. I dont know anything about them, though.

Also, I feel the need to mention Dino, Desi and Billy. A bit of a novelty band from the sixties (Dean Martin Jr and Desi Arnez Jr) and they did an album of american pop hits including some really cool surf songs.

Lets not forget the Pixies surf album Bossanova, which contains the great Ana. Otherwise I'm not too familiar with surf....

What about that song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack? Is it called Commanche? Would that be considered a surf song?

Pipeline, definitely.

The first incarnation of The Cruzados was called The Plugz, and they have a lot of Fender-heavy quasi-surf music on the Repo Man soundtrack.

And there is a loud, heavy version of Pipeline that was recorded sometime before 1984 (because that's when I heard it, in a now-defunct record store), that really explored all the sonic possibilities of the music.

Check out LOS STRAITJACKETS - Totally great suf revival performed by people dressed as Mexican Wrestlers -- And oddly enough, they never reek of gimmicks or novelties -- It just sounds like solid, good surf music.
