I'm sorry guys but IMHO I don't think of The French Connection,Dirty Harry,Serpico as detective films they are cops they get paid by the government you could call them police detective or better yet homicide detective but true detective work for a certain rate sometimes out of work just scraping bye other time working for outrageous rates with a Fedora hat, trenchcoat and are able to deciding what case to take a what case not too.

Here's my picks:

1.The Long Goodbye (1973)
2.Chinatown (1974)
3.Murder on the Orient Express (1974)
4.Night Moves (1975)
5.Shamus (1973)
6.The Late Show (1977)
7.Farewell My Lovely (1975)

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait!

"All the President's Men", how could anyone forget that movie. It is one of my personal favorites and one of the best detective movies ever made.
