Good Movie Music

Recently I watched Requiem for a Dream, and the music is great in that movie. What other movies have really awesome music?

Jon Brion's ETERNAL SUNSHINE is fantastic. It's quirky and touching and it is very untraditional in terms of film scoring. it makes use of the piano and guitar quite a bit which i always love...just having a touch of piano in some scores can make them really stand out. and it even uses an out-of-tune piano for one of the tracks (Peer Pressure). Check out Main Titles, Row, and Theme for some of the better selections from the soundtrack. I think Drive In was also one of the more quirky but fun parts of the score.

Bernard Herrmann's VERTIGO score is amazing too. i haven't seen the film for a while, but the main theme is one of the most recognizable themes in cinematic history. it's a fantastic and creepy little theme.

Elmer Bernstein's FAR FROM HEAVEN has a more traditional but sweeping score that i enjoyed more after repeat listens. it works better in the context of the film, but it's a really good score overall.

Danny Elfman's EDWARD SCISSORHANDS is possibly one of my biggest favorites for scoring. It's extremely melodic, is quite quirky at times and has that eerie choir effect that Elfman also put to good use with Sleepy Hollow. The Grand Finale, Main Titles, and i believe Ice something or other were my favorite tracks.

Philip Glass's THE HOURS is another brilliant piano-based score. I'm not sure which one i like better of his, Truman Show or the hours, but probably The Hours slightly. he uses a lot of repeated broken chords/passages (alberti bass? not sure) in many of his themes. Check out Morning Passages and The Hours for two of the better tracks.

James Horner's A BEAUTIFUL MIND is a good score too. It has a really neat quality to it and uses teh choir effect effectively as well. Check out Cracking the Russian Codes for one of the best tracks.

John William's CATCH ME IF YOU CAN and A.I. ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE scores. Catch Me If You Can is a refreshing jazz score, of the type that he hasn't done in many years. it's an extremely fun score. A.I.'s score feels sort of like Glass's work (only slightly), but it's great as well. My favorite piece from that score is The Reunion...it's 7 minutes long, but if u wait, the piano theme comes on (what is it with me and piano themes :p) and it's really nice.

Tan Dun's CROUCHING TIGER and HERO are brilliant string based scores. The cello (Yo-Yo Ma) and violin (Itzhak Perlman) work in each of these is amazing. and the scores are brilliant, with sweeping parts as well as some tense drumming. I like Farewell from Crouching Tiger a lot.

Rachel Portman's CIDER HOUSE RULES is somewhat a one-note score, but at the very least track down the simple but effective main piano theme.

Joe Hisaishi's ENTIRE BODY OF WORK is amazing. His scores for Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke seem oh-so-slightly more experimental than his earlier scores which is fitting as Spirited Away and Mononoke are quite different from Miyazaki's other work (well apart from Nausicaa anyway) in some aspects. My favorite score of his is for LAPUTA: CASTLE IN THE SKY which has not a single bad part in it. I like Girl Falling From the Sky and the other one i can't quite remember the name, but it's the sad piano-only piece that plays when they first get to Laputa and see the robot graves. His score for the live-action KIKUJIRO'S SUMMER is amazing too. One of my favorite pieces EVER, Rain is on it. it's a six minute instrumental piece that i think is cello, violin (or viola?), and piano based. extremely melodic, and an amazing piece.

LOL i've went on for quite a bit, but that's just the tip of the iceberg.

and i love the score for Requiem for a Dream, but my cousin (whose studying music at U of T...he's an amazing composer, and good at improvising jazz) hates it...lol i guess it's cuz it drones on so much, but that's intentional so.

I think that the stuff in Requiem for a Dream sounds similar to Lisa Gerrard's brilliant music in Gladiator, The Insider, Whalerider and Man on Fire just to name a few.

i also really like the songs from pulp fiction and reservior dogs. not the score, but the songs in movies like the song playing when mia is dancing w/ vincent or the song playing with mr. blonde and the cop (im really bad in remembering song names)

Kill Bill Vol 1. had some killer music that made the movie even better.

Lord of the Rings - Amazing. It gives the movie extra emotion.

The Crow - Haunting. Had a incredible soundtrack also!

Blade Runner - Vangelis are always top notch stuff. You can never go wrong.

Kill Bill 1 and 2 - The Rza of the Wu-Tang Clan does an amazing job. Look to see him more in the future.

The Last Samurai - The score help bring tears to my eye at the ending. Enough said.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - One of the most memorable scores of all time. Right up there with the "Imperial March" from "Star Wars"

Croutching Tiger: Hidden Dragon - This score also helped to jerk some tears. Especially the ending score. Breath taking to listen to.

Star Wars - Who wouldn't want to walk into a new place and have an orchestra following you playing the "Imperial March". Probably the most famous score of all time in movies.

Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai had cool music thanks to The RZA.

Underworld had a rockin' soundtrack as Maynard James Keenan of Tool and A Perfect Circle fame was involved in the production of each track.

Edward Burns' She's the One had a cool soundtrack courtesy of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

i also dig just about any soundtrack that Mark Motherbaugh works on i.e. The Royal Tenenbaums , Welcome to Collinwood , etc.

The Cooler had lots of cool jazz music/

If you want a really good soundtrack to a really good movie then check out Ravenous. The soundtrack is so good and fits perfectly with the movie. I tried to find the soundtrack but it isnt anywhere, you would be better off buying the movie because its cheap and definatelly worth it.
