Have you schmoes seen this? It is really good! Not perfect, but really good. A smart, stylish horror suspense/horror movie that doesn't romanticise its subject matter.
I am very hard to please when it comes to horror movies and I *hate* slasher flicks. In fact, if I'd known that this was a slasher flick when I rented it, I wouldn't have done so. Lucky for me that I was mislead by the box.
This is a movie from New Zealand, made about five years ago. It actually has a good story and interesting characters (although now and then, they stray into camp). Not a lot of gore, not a lot of special effects, but the use of light, sound and editing is superb.
Very briefly, this is a film about a serial killer in a mental institution who is interviewed by a psychologist determined to find out what makes him tick. The story is mainly told by the killer in flashback.

I finally got to see it, only to have the last 10 to 15 minutes crap out on me! Damn netflix dvds.
At any rate, in some ways I was dissapointed as I expected some things more complex, he seemed to give in pretty easily to some of the urges, but in other ways I found it really creative. Loved the constant flashbacks and the way they were done.

Loved it I thaught the whole film was handled very well, this is definetly a very under appreciated film although everyone I know who has seen it has loved it, hardly anyone has seen it. It available in the UK on DVD really cheap you've got no exuce to not see it now.

To me The Ugly is the second best New Zealandian horror/thriller movie just after Next Of Kin (aka Return To Monclare)
I like the black blood used in The Ugly, the ambiguous characters, too like the director of the asylum, doctor Schumaker and of course Simon Cartwright.
I also like the dark, somber ending.

It's a really well made movie that I appreciated more after a second viewing. The actor who plays Simon does a good job, and some parts are pretty disturbing. I didn't quite understand the ending though.

Hey Erin I like somber endings !
Director Scott Reynolds perfected his unusal style of storytelling in HEAVEN (1998) which he made right after THE UGLY.
Love THE UGLY but HEAVEN is much much better. Worth checking out.

I though this was great. A very little seen gem from Austalia that should have gotton at least a limited U.S. release. It is more thoughtful than most recent horror films. This movie just proves that if you want good horror, find an independent movie.

An excellent film which does not dissappoint. Not quite as good as say Silence of the Lambs, but I'm sure the budget was far less in filming. I loved the twists as the characters develope over time. Much better than I would have predicted.

I've been wanting to see that since I read The Arrow's review, sounded pretty cool.
And it seems Play.com got it at a good price, so...

Which is where I originally heard about it. Still, was surprised they included it on the disc (along with the Guardian - wtf?)

well, eventually got round to seeing this and while i was kinda disappointed by the general lack of gore (i'd heard this was a very bloody film) it was mostly well acted, aside from during some of the flashback scenes, and directed. i rather liked the director's style although some of the focusing during the interview got kinda annoying. the use of black blood was an interesting touch and gave the film an odd feel, the "visitors" covered in it were pretty damn creepy as well
overall it was a damn good film, just a shame the director hasn't done many other films
8/10
