About two months ago I decided to start buying singles again. My weekly copy of NME is the radar with which I steer myself through murky waters in a search for hot new bands. A few weeks back a new band called The Others released their debut single This Is For The Poor and NME bestowed upon it the coveted title of Single Of The Week. I bought it and frankly it's an incredible debut.

There are three tracks on the EP. First up is This Is For The Poor and it's basically an outsider rant offering support to all of the pockets of society that get pissed on by the establishment. It's one of those songs that walks the tightrope that forms a dividing line between absolute genius and annoying as fuck. Fortunately when I lost my balance I landed in the "absolute genius" camp and decided to stay there. Second track How I Nearly Lost You is markedly different fare. It sounds little like early Manic Street Preachers. Melancholy rock at it's most grandiose and wanting. It's yearning vocals and hook filled melodies are breathtaking. It was upon listening to this song for the first time that I started to get very fucking excited indeed. My "this is really cool" alarm was chiming so loud it almost drowned out the song. Then the third track...fuck...the third track!!! It's called Almanac and it has more swagger than an army of Tony Maneros. Gloriously scuzzed up rock that creates a Jesus And Mary Chain style groove that had me grinning for three minutes. This is seriously good stuff and if this debut single is any indication The Others are a band to watch.

Uk schmoes with an ounce of sense...this is still available for the not unreasonable cost of £3.99 from Amazon.co.uk...

You might not like it...but I swear to fucking christ that if you do you will thank me.

You can stream an entire live performance from The Others at the XFM website. I watched it a couple of nights ago. I really want to see these guys live now. They are brilliant.

If you have a decent connection check it out here...The Others Live (http://www.xfm.co.uk/Article.asp?id=24282)...well worth 30 mins of anyone's time.

It's about halfway down the page slap bang between the Art Brut gig and the Special Needs gig.

Here's the blurb from the XFM site and a direct connection to the video feeds (in both dial-up and broadband flavours) for those who can't be bothered clicking on the link above. :D

The Others 'X-posure Live'

Dial-Up (http://www2.xfm.co.uk/staticweb/avplayers/x-posure01/xposure39.html)

Broadband (http://www2.xfm.co.uk/staticweb/avplayers/x-posure01/xposure39.html?playhigh)

Armed with a burning sense of injustice and some dirtied up guitars The Others hit the stage with the wage-slave anthem 'Lackey', frontman Dominic Masters flinging himself about the stage like a less-cuddly version of Hundred Reasons' Colin Doran.

As things progress however, it becomes clear that Masters is in fact a pre-pubescent Johnny Rotten with a voice like an angry pitbull.

With most bands, every song's a love song, but the closest The Others get is 'Johan', which takes The Strokes 'Someday' riff and twists it into something strange and ugly with some shuffling, off-beat drums - 'We don't need anyone/Except me and you/I still love you to bits' snarls Masters, sounding more like he'd rather hack you to pieces. Current single 'This Is For The Poor' finishes things off, prompting a rare invasion of The Barfly's tiny stage. The Kids are, as they say, united.

WELL WORTH CHECKING OUT!!!
