this ones got the most replies so far so...

holy shit that is huge! I knew i was underestimating Potter as soon as i heard that the midnight shows were selling out. If Potter 3 can do this much, I wonder how muchy Spidey's gunna pull in July.

And o yeah i best get in to Potter today...

WOOHOO!! I saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban Thursday at midnight and I'm going to see it again today probably.

Since more people decided to post in this one we'll leave this one as the official weekend box office thread.

And those numbers are the reason why I'm waiting until a weekday (probably Tuesday) to see the movie because I want to be able to enjoy it without all these people annoying me. I'll let it die down some.

I also edited the subject so that people know it's for the entire weekend instead of just Friday.

WOW! Jawdropping. I was expecting huge business, but nothing like this. Go Harry! Azkaban is really good. I hope it beats Spidey and upcoming Spidey 2.

I AM also so surprised to see DAY AFTER dropping so much! It has an amazing opening and now is dropping over 60%, which is not fair since it is one of the best disaster flicks ever. Its doing amazing worldwide though, MAYBE, just maybe, americans didn't like to see themselves crying for help in the other half of the world. ;)

i don't think this should come as too big of a surprise to anybody. when you think about it it makes sense. there's been a larger gap between chamber of secrets and prisoner of azkaban so the demand would be higher, it's just the beginning of summer now so lots of people are getting out of school. in fact, a whole ton of girls from my school skipped the afternoon yesterday to go see it.

And not only that, but this is I think the major factor -> Prisoner of Azkaban has always been by FAR the most popular book. Goblet of Fire is close in popularity, but the first two and the fifth don't even compare when most Pottermaniacs talk about which of the five books are their favorites.

I personally think Goblet of Fire is the best book, but Prisoner of Azkaban definitely appeals to people a lot more than the first two. So the fact that the movie could possibly break records makes sense. Add to that all the great reviews (excluding our own Jo here) from most critics, and you have a definite hit on your hands.

Coming back a second later...and did i mention the fact that the movie is shorter which means more screenings?

Yeah but the fact it's shorter may lead to more negative word of mouth, because they've cut more from the book. They didn't even bother to explain who moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs are.

Wow! GREAT numbers for HARRY POTTER! I can't wait to see it...it looks fantastic. I wouldn't be surprised if it cleared $120 million this weekend.

Decent hold for SHREK 2. It was facing stiff competition this weekend and it still could make over $40 million. It will probably top out around $400 million.

THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW cannot be considered a flop or a disappointment anymore. It will make its budget ($125 million) back this weekend and despite the steep drop this weekend, it has good numbers during the weekdays and will probably have steady drops from now on. It should be able to make it to around $180-200 million by the end of its run.

Good holds for RAISING HELEN and MEAN GIRLS.

Here are Saturday's Numbers:

HARRY POTTER AND PRISONER OF AZKABAN 33.22 / 74.43
SHREK 2 15.46
DAY AFTER TOMORROW, THE 10.97
RAISING HELEN 2.68
TROY 2.43
SOUL PLANE 1.12
MEAN GIRLS 1.11
VAN HELSING 1.00
MAN ON FIRE .43
SUPER SIZE ME .38

Harry Potter had a 20% drop. It's not suprising considering this IS summer and the midnight showings swelled its Friday gross. This is still an AMAZING weekend gross.

Great for Potter, though I'd like to kill whoever inflated the Friday estimates to $40+ million.

GREAT, but not enough to beat Spidey. Crap.

I was thinking a 100 mil , but man it dropped pretty damn hard . Forget about beating the original Spidey's record , no matter what happens SM 2 should easily set new records anyway .

100 mil is still great , but it still fell a little short of expectations . Oh well , some executive will just have to wait to close on that house in Malibu a couple of more weeks .
