This is making not want to rent anymore. New releases are usually in good condition but if you want to rent something older then you risk getting a bad disc/tape. The worst part is that when you return them you don't get another rental for free and the store clerks don't even bother to get the disc/tape fixed.

So now I pretty much buy all of my films. And since I don't like to blind buy very much, I rarely see anything new unless it's on The Movie Network.

I hear ya. I rented Wonder Boys on VHS. I was loving the flick up until the tracking went ape shit. I couldn't even make out the picture at all. So now I have to rent it somewhere's else again.

This happened to me when I rented Seven Samurai from the library, which probably means I've really only seen like half the movie. The only logical explanation that I can think of is that some half-wit rented it, realized it was in subtitles, and then started hurling it across his living room while mumbling...

"God damn subtitles!"

That's just my theory, anyway. :D

well it comes to this. If everyone did a bit of TLC with rentals EVERYONE would be a happy individual. In reference to DVD's I sometimes wanna slap upside the heads when I find fingerprints on them. WTF!!!! Handling DVD discs is from either the MIDDLE of the disc and / or the EDGE of the disc. The scratching cant be helped but scummy fingerprints just PISSES me off!

I rent because there are some things that are worth watching, but I don't want to buy it because I know I'll never watch it ever again.

i don't rent old dvd's anymore, my dvd player gets stuck all the time! Or it suddenly jumps, while in the middle of the movie, to an earlier scene... but it takes a while that I notice that...and while watching the movie i think like, hey hasn't he walked there before?
I don't know WHAT people are doing with the discs, it's always full with deep scratches that are impossible to be made with fingernails or something....maybe knives
But when i return it to the store, i do get a free coupon...........to rent the same old movie again..

ahhhhh! finally a thread i can really relate to. i used to work for Blockbuster for almost six years so i've seen my fair share of defective material. and in about 90% of the cases it was either two things, operator error or inferior machinery. it's amazing how someone will bring back a dvd and say it's defective when u can look at it and wonder "well maybe all those smudges have something to do with it" and these people come in and claim they have no idea how to clean a disc. like they've never heard of cleaning wipes or a radial cleaner. the tapes are a bit more legitimate. the older tapes do get old, and over time they start to lose sound and picture quality until they finally either snap or get eaten up by ur machine. a lot more sympathetic towards the old tape, but there really is no excuse for all the "defective dvds" out there, especially the ones that don't show any signs of excessive abuse. and of course the other reason about my machine not being able to play it. although we have seen a few select titles that had compatibility issues with certain players. those instances were few and far between and most of the time, the company will send us a memo before the initial street date to let us know of impending problems with a certain title. so most of that "won't play in my player crap" is just that "crap". and blockbuster policy has always been if the movie is defective you get another copy of the SAME title, unless it's not in stock, in which case you'd get a rental credit for anything else in the store. i know a lot of other mom and pop places won't even give you that.

We rent alot of dvds and let me tell you that people don't respect other peoples things. I cant believe how people abuse dvds.

A new dvd is release on Tuesday and sometimes we get it on Friday and it looks like it's been used 100 times already.
Fingerprints , scratches etc.
PEOPLE HAVE RESPECT!

That's why I buy movies that I know I will really like.
There's nothing like having your own dvds without having them al scratched up.

My dad borrows them from time to time but he actually takes care of them. I always give him them in a bag. Not to have them slide around and fall on car floor and get dirty.

I had a few dvds that were bad and it was like 9:00 pm and we were getting ready to sit down and watch them. We had to get on the phone and call the video store up and tell them about it and if they had another copy available.

One video store we deal with its just a few minutes away, so its not too much of a pain to get there quick. But it really sucks that you have to get dressed and run out at that time.

At some time they tell you it is probably your player. WHAT!
I have over 100 dvds and they all play fine.
Also I tried the same dvd in other players in my house and it does that exact same thing. Some video store clerks are stupid.
I really hate video stores.
