The first Freddy film I ever saw was Freddy vs. Jason, so I decided to see some old classic Freddy movies too.
The first Nightmare on Elm Street rocked. I truly loved everything about.
Then I saw Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. It was funny, but I never thought of it as anything else. If you need a good comedy when you're sad, it's all good.
Could someone who's seen other Nightmare on Elm Street films tell me what they're like? I mean, everyone has a different opinion, but I'll believe the one who sounds most serious about it.

ANOES 4 is definitely the best of the series. It's goofy but still fun and cool. Freddy isn't really too scary, but it's ok because he's still a cool villain. I like the megapowers that Alice gets.
ANOES 3 is next, I guess. It has a more serious tone to it and even has good old Nancy back. Most people like this one best or just behind the first one. This one has some pretty awesome dream fights.. very memorable sequences!
ANOES 2 is pretty good, but a lot of people make fun of it for its sort of gay undertones. It strays away from the Freddy formula and is the only one like it in the whole series.
ANOES 5 is pretty bad, but if I remember, it had some ok laughs in it. The story is pretty bad at this point.
ANOES 7 (aka New Nightmare) is alright, but rather boring if you ask me. They go for straight and serious in this one. It works, but the movie seems overlong and Freddy looks a little bit odd. It had one of my favourite kills in a movie though.. something relating to a ceiling. You'll see.
Side-note: I really didn't describe the plots of them because they're all relatively the same. Don't fall asleep, don't fall asleep.

I actually heard it was the best in the series. Lemme guess........it's the same ceiling thing from the first, right?

IMO part 2 is one of the worst movies ever. I hate it was a passion. New nightmare was good cause it was different, the other ones its been so long sine I've seen them I can't give my input on them. But yes the first does rule.

Part 2: Good. I really liked this one a lot. I know a lot of people don't like, but it had a creepy atmosphere, and a cool idea about Freddy wanting to use Jessie to kill. This was the last movie before Freddy becomes the wisecracker.
Part3: Good. I liked this one too. It had a great storyline, and cool characters. Gory and erie, Freddy is cool too, but he starts to become the 'wisecracker'.
Part4: Ok. I liked it, it was pretty good. Nice atmosphere and cast. Getting more on the comedy side tho.
Part5: Horrid. Nothing really good about this movie.
Part6: Ok. Had it's moments, but failed attempt to explain Freddy and his past. Check out the Freddy's Nightmares Pilot "No More Mister Nice Guy.' To get the best adaptation of Freddy's past.
Part7:Ok. I didn't really like this one either. Too long, and it wasn't that good, silly ideas about Earthquakes and Freddy.
Here is my order for the films best:
Part 1
part 3
Part 2
Part 4
Part 5
Part 6
Part 7

My order:
Original
New Nightmare (Im ny opinion, equal to the original)
Dream Warriors
Dream Master
Dream Baby
Freddy's Dead
Freddy's Revenge
1, 2, 4, 5, and New Nightmare are pretty solid flicks, but 2 and 6 are terrible (and no, nto just for the gay overtones in 2).

I think you should check out all the films. If you're into horror you should enjoy each of these movies, some just less than others (as you found out with part 6). I'd say the less entertaining films were 4 & 5, but like I said before, they're all good.

There all worth checking out, but 1,3, and 7 are the best of the bunch.

NOES 2 - It just sucks. It's horrible with lots of shitty acting and pointless gay overtones. It does have a couple of decent effects. I'll give it a 3/10 for the effects and some unintentional comedy.
NOES 3 - Really neat flick where Freddy is sort of like how he is in Freddy Vs Jason he's both funny and serious at the same time. Good performances from everyone, and some cool death scenes. Some cheesyness tarnishes it though (The goddamned wizard master.) 7.5/10
NOES 4 - My personal favorite of the series. It has lots of cheesy moments and effects, the good kind though. Some good kills, likeable characters, a funny Freddy (That's either a good thing or a bad thing), and I like the storyline with Alice getting her powers. 8/10
NOES 5 - Nothing really memorable about it at all. Freddy starts to get annoying, not a whole lot of likeable characters outside of Alice, a very memorable kill, and not a whole lot of anything else. 5/10
Wes Craven's New Nightmare - This is probably the second best film from a acting and a directing standpoint of the series. Not a lot of memorable kills, but a more serious Freddy, a cool atmosphere, and the whole real life/story thing is great. Some boring moments and a pretty awkward performance from Miko Hughes, who somehow was a better actor when he was only 2 years old in Pet Semetary, are the bad points. 7.5/10
I'd rank them:
1
4
7
3
6
5
2

A Nightmare On Elm Street and Pt.3: Dream Warriors are probably the only worthy one's.
New Nightmare was a nice little throwback from Craven, but he could have done alot better.

Well, after reading all of these opinions, probably the only thing that I could probably say is that you'll probably just have to find out for yourself by watching them.
Hell, just run right out and get the entire box set with all 7 movies and the bonus disk that is so full of cool Nightmare shit that your head will just explode....
It even has the 3-D glasses to watch that piece of shit Freddy's Dead.
