I once made the comment that people who say Donnie Darko is their favorite movie are like people who listen to the Dave Matthews Band, if its all you listen to, then of course its your favorite.
Here's a list of movies that the Hipster kids (a.k.a. scenesters, indie kids, mall punks etc. etc.) seem to like alot:
Donnie Darko
Requiem For a Dream
Amelie
Pi
go up to almost any kid at a show with black rimmed glasses and a messenger bag and ask them what theyre favorite movie is, 9 times out of 10 it will be one of those.
Has anyone else noticed this disturbing trend among our nations youth?
what other movies could be added to the list?

i'd like to see some old school movie dudes post in this thread to see what the hipster movies from a few years ago were. although i'm sure the hipster movie dam blew with the invention of home video and especially the accessibility to millions of titles via the internet.
i'd like to add one more:
Battle Royale

You just described the typical fim school student... Reminds me of the director from Muholland drive, another flick to ad to your list as well...

well hey, good movies are good movies. i do, however, agree that people should try/watch new things from time to time.
if that's what the typical film student is like, then i guess i have to look forward to making some interesting friends when i get to Film School!

haha, film school students. its all good that they want to work in film and stuff but c'mon, there are SO MANY movies, watch more of them. i'm not looking forward to the crop of films inspired by the above mentioned titles.
i will say however i do enjoy all the movies listed except for amelie.

I've seen three of those four, and I think they were pretty damn good. The only one I haven't seen is PI, but I'll probably nab that from Netflix here pretty soon.
DONNIE DARKO was an awesome movie, I don't care what anyone says. Long after it "goes out of style", it will probably still be one of my favorites.
I just don't see how you can leave out the most hipsterish movie of all time: FIGHT CLUB.
If you ask me, it's a great flick, I'm pretty sure SURVIVOR will be much better (I'm reading it right now, and it pretty much blows everything else Palahniuk wrote away), you have no idea how ecstatic I was to hear from my favorite movie website that the SURVIVOR movie is next in line to be made, as far as Palahniuk books go.
But FIGHT CLUB, I hate to call it overrated, but so many hipster college kids live their lives by witty Chuck Palahniuk one liners, it's not even funny. One time when I was working at Blockbuster, as a joke, I pretended to make a big deal out of FIGHT CLUB. For a whole weekend, I told hipster kids that it was the movie that changed my life, that I was moved and touched by it. I think if they had kept the original ending, the movie would have been better, but it still garners a hearty 9/10 from me. I just think the message of the movie is lost on some of these people. I'm not normally one to go on about the "message" and "meaning" of movies, as I don't really consider myself that sort of filmwatcher/maker, but FIGHT CLUB gets too much credit, as far as being THE movie goes.
DONNIE DARKO was so much better than FIGHT CLUB on so many different levels. This theatrical re-release is just what I've been hoping for, to tell the truth.

i cant believe i forgot fight club. i really love that movie and i try not to think about how watered down the point of it has become because of overquoting and overhyping (same with Office Space, brilliant movie, but the worst people in the world like it "I'll show her my O face, O , O , O!")
sickening really, an anti-consumerist movie feeding consumer culture? maybe that was the point of it after all? I have yet to read any of Palahniuks other works but I am plan on doing so in the near future. I've heard nothing but good things about survivor.
