View Full Version : childhood movies you watched REPEATEDLY

i don't know about you guys, but i was the type of child who watched the movies i liked over and over and over again. i'm sure it drove my parents crazy, but it's what i did.
i started thinking about the movies i really liked when i was a kid (12 and younger), and i made a list of all the ones i can remember (most likely because they're burned into my memory). i'm still not sure how those movies have shaped my present cinematic likes and dislikes, but it's interesting to think about it.
here's the list of the movies that i watched repeatedly as a child, with a few comments about each. now i want to know about my fellow schmoes childhood movies! in order to qualify, the movies must meet 2 criteria:
1) released before you turned 13
2) you watched them AT LEAST 10 times
ps: this list reveals 2 things about me - i am DEFINITELY a child of the 80s, and i liked some pretty crappy movies. carry on.
pinocchio
sleeping beauty
- my mother says i watched these movies a lot when i was 3-4 years old. obviously i don't really remember that, but she said they were the only disney movies i liked.
willy wonka and the chocolate factory
- since roald dahl was one of my favorite authors and i read "charlie and the chocolate factory" too many times to count, this one makes sense.
airplane!
- my favorite part was with the autopilot. i did not *get* the whole joke until many years later...but it was still funny.
nine to five
- ok, not a great movie, but i was a kid. give me a break!
time bandits
- ahhh, i guess i did have some taste as a child. i remember the part when they're trapped in these cages hanging above a black abyss. that scared me.
the toy
- i thought this movie was hilarious. i was so envious of the kid's toy room! poor scotty schwartz, huh?
war games
- this movie teaches a good lesson - sometimes, the only winning move is not to play. seriously! shut up.
the ewok adventure
- ok, technically a made for tv movie, but my mom taped it and i watched it a bazillion times. what kid didn't love ewoks? [VerucaSaltVoice]daddy, i want an ewok![/VSV]
ghostbusters
- classic.
muppets take manhattan
- i just watched this recently for the first time in a long time, and i knew the words to all the songs. so, even though i am a dork, this movie is still a classic.
neverending story
- i friggin' loved this movie. even though i was a nerd, i hated school, so the thought of ditching to go into the attic and into a fantasy land was very appealing.
follow that bird
- big bird turns blue - so sad!
the goonies
- CLASSIC. nuff said.
the journey of natty gan
- this movie was pretty good, and apparently my love of john cusack began early in life.
pee wees big adventure
- i could spin out some qoutes from this movie, but i wouldn't know where to begin. wait, yeah i would - IS THIS SOMETHING YOU CAN SHARE WITH THE REST OF US, AMAZING LARRY????
return to oz
- a weird movie, but still good.
care bears movie 2: a new generation
- i don't even want to talk about this.
crocodile dundee
- or this.
flight of the navigator
- i don't care what people say, this movie rocked my socks.
the golden child
- what the?
little shop of horrors
- FRIGGIN' CLASSIC. i know every word to every song with pride, people!
short circuit
- johnny five! so cute.
the three amigos
- still funny.
batteries not included
- what a tearjerker. haven't seen this one in forever.
mannequin
- i had a crush on andrew mcarthy. you got a problem with that? and i've got two words for you - HOLLYWOOD MONTROSE.
spaceballs
- may the schwartz be with you.
who's that girl
- apparently i was a disturbed child.
the adventures of baron munchausen
- wonderful and great for a kid with a wild imagination.
beetlejuice
- CLASSIC. nice fuckin' model! *honk honk*
big
- c'mon, it was good.
the great outdoors
- john candy was the bomb, yo.
pulse
- this movie was on hbo a lot, so i watched it. end of story.
short circuit 2
- johnny five and fisher stevens - so cute! but i caught it a few weeks back on tv and i realized that fisher stevens was supposed to be playing an indian guy - i forgot about that - wtf?
twins
- i don't know.
who framed roger rabbit
- CLASSIC.
willow
- all i remember is val kilmer eating a black root. does that make sense?
ghostbusters 2
- it's miller time.
honey i shrunk the kids
- i really can't explain this. however, i did like the part where the kids are on the lawn.
steel magnolias
three fugitives
- huh?
weekend at bernie's
- i'm just gonna chalk this one up to the crush on andrew mcarthy and leave it at that.
gremlins 2: the new batch
- that gremlin party rocked.
quick change
- i used to laugh my ASS off at this movie. haven't seen it in a long time, though.
welcome home, roxy carmichael
- weird but cool movie. dinky bossetti was the first punk/goth/weirdo girl i ever saw in a movie, and looking back i think she influenced me a little bit to just be my strange self.
delirious
- i actually say this in a theatre, people.
nothing but trouble
- a great bad movie. i knew it then, too, but i watched it anyway. i'd watch it right now if it was on! you heard me right!
regarding henry
- i really really liked this movie.
wayne's world
- to this day, if i come into some money, i'll start chanting "i've got 5 thousand dollars! i've got 5 thousand dollars!"
ok, the last 3 came out when i was 12, so i'm stretching it a little, but i did watch all 3 of them A LOT.
benny and joon (1993)
- *swoon* that is all.
freaked (1993)
- possibly one of the best movies ever made. or not.
the last action hero (1993)
- say what you will, but there was some funny stuff in there - to me, at least.
ok guy, your turn! time for a little nostalgia.

Probably my #1 fav film as a child! Although as a kid I was crazy about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and loved all the movies as well. I still love Masters of the Universe and like the Ninja Turtles movies although the second one had alot of lame dialogue and moments. But even those scenes/dialogue I look at with great affection.
And then there is Ghostbusters, which of coarse, I still love!

By the time I was 11 I must have seen the lost boys and the 1st two die hard's 50 times between 'em. The Indy movies too; last crucade mainly. I had seen robocop loads of times by that age as well, but I always fast forwarded the bit where emil melts, because it wasn't nice.
Actiually come to think of it I had seen some fucked up movies back then. I saw my dads copy of basic instinct with his permission aged 12 or 13 I think. Oh well I turned out nice and normal in the end. Maybe. Ha Ha.

Of course it does! Babies in those times were raised on blackroot. It's good for you. It put's hair on your chest!
Hey Gretchen you got a mighty fine list there, reminds me of when I was a kid as well. Specialy when you talk about Manequin and Whos that girl I remember thinking those two movies were so hilarious! Theyve got that 80s early 90s charm to them.
And I think your the coolest schmoette for saying that you like Nothing But Trouble, I happen to think that that movie is a masterpiece of funny cinema. A guilty pleasure if there ever was one. I will now proceed to quote one of many favorite quotes that I like from this hilarious film:
Fausto: "and I will not have my sister, who was once the queen of the Mardi Gras sitting in a table with a pickle shooting train!"

I remember going to the first ever screening in my hometown of 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' when I was five, and I was OBSESSED with that film. When the film ended, I was running through town jumping on top of drain covers hoping to somehow summon the turtles...er...
Needless to say, it left its mark - I'm studying Journalism and am an Elias Koteas fan. Good times. I have to admit, Michaelangelo was my favourite.
Another one I used to watch repeatedly was 'Look Who's Talking Too' - don't ask me why. I always remember seeing the opening scene and not knowing what a diaphragm was. But what stays with me most is 'Mr Toilet Man.' A legend in his own right.
'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?' was, and still is, one of my favourites, although I was absolutely petrified of Christopher Lloyd in that final showdown. That bit where he's run over by the steamroller and then slowly gets up before flipping around...ugh.

Also remember watching Suburban Commando, Walk like a Man with Howie Mandell and another Mandell flick called Little Monsters wich has to be the corniest flick ever made, yet as a kid I would watch that one constantly.
Also Revenge of the Nerds and Harry and the Hendersons.

Hey yeah I saw Cloak and Dagger quite a few times as a kid as well! Its the one where the kid has a game and the main character is his heroe and he sort of makes believe that the heroe guy is with him in all his adventures.
And hey dont be ashamed to admit you watched Howard the Duck I saw that film more times then any normal human should and Ill tell you, it aint half as bad as its made out to seem. That flick is a nice little slice of the 80s.
And Adventures in Babysitting, damn, havent seen it in ages, but I sure as hell loved it. I liked that part where the little girl thats obsessed with Thor comics supposedly finally meets him in a car repair shop. Funny shite.

i don't know what it is about "nothing but trouble," but i find that movie to be utterly watchable. i normally don't like most of the actors in the movie (chevy chase, demi moore), but this movie fits into the "so utterly bad it's hilarious" category for me. i mean, the movie has tupac and digital underground in it for christ's sake! classic!

Yeah, the judge is one funny as hell character with many, many quotable lines like the one you just mentioned.
That part with tupac and digital underground is funny as hell, with the judge playing his piano and all the girls hanging around him like he was some sexy dude. :D

Oh man, this was also a childhood favorite of mine. I honestly think that this movie is halarious and fun to watch.
For fucks sake I cant believe that Angelica Huston is part of the cast of this movie!
I loved those scenes where they are fastforwarding through time and everything happens really fast! Like they have sex then five minutes later shes pregnant, then five minutes later the baby is born, then five minutes later he is a young adult...and then they all start to get really old and have lots of grey hair....funny stuff. Id like to rewatch this one soon.
And Gretchen, I too saw Innerspace countless times. Joe Dante was the man back in those days! He made some great flicks like Explorers, the Gremlins flicks and Innerspaces. Too bad he has de evolutionized into making stuff like Looney Tunes back in action and Small Soldiers...
