Thats the problem......none of us really know for sure. That's why we're all desperately waiting on a fifth installment to 'wrap things up' . The TALL MAN had been pursuing Mike for many years, and most phans think that Mike is being lined up to take over from the TALL MAN. Why hasn't the TALL MAN killed Mike? He's had a few chances (most notable when he captures him in PHANTASM 3)! And when REGGIE and co save Mike, later on in that same film, a sphere starts to protrude from his head, and his eyes begin to look like spheres also!!! It seems the TALL MAN is experimenting with MIKE, and he is the chosen one to take over his reign.
That's what most of us think anyway.

Thats what I think as well. In part four it is very evident. Theres a scene where the Tall Man shows Mike a change of clothes that look exactly like the clothes that the tall man wears and The Tall man aludes that they are for him.
Something makes Mike special, remember he has (telephathic and psychic abilities) and The Tall Man wants him because of it.
The Tall Man is planning on taking over the earth as seen in that moment in Phantasm: Oblivion in which he travels to the future and you can see the streets all empty and everyone is gone because they are running away from the plague that is rumored will wipe out most of humanity in part V. Im thinking either he wants Mike to take over for him, or he wants someone to teach. (Kind of like Nightmare on Elmstree 5: The Dream Child or in Stephen Kings The Storm of the century where Linoge wants to pass all his knowledge onto someone.)

I'm with Morgan. My conspiracy theory is that Mike created The Tall Man through intense, cathartic nightmares. Mr. Morningside wants Mike to take his place since he's the one who brought him into reality.

VERY interesting idea count.
Personally, I don`t even think Don Coscarelli himself knows for sure what the hell is going on.

thats a pretty good theory there... nonetheless, the series isn't that appealing and great to me, the only watchable ones are 1 & 2, 4 I just don't remember....and 3, I don't WANT to remember.

There have been talks about a fifth installment ever since OBLIVION was done and dusted. The director COSCARELLI and all of the original cast will return if the film ever does come to fruition, but last I heard they were still having problems with securing an ample budget. :(

Part IV (Oblivion) does a good job of explaining many things (like The Tall Mans origins) but also does a formidable job of forming a whole new bunch of questions.
It almost feels like Mike has no control over wants going to happen to him, like the Tall Man will win no matter what. Heck most of the "ghost towns" that Reggie drives through are an evidence that essentially the Tall Man is winning.
Also we can see that the tall man is controling Mike in scenes like the one where Mike drives through the night, but discovers all too quickly that it is the Tall Man who controls this ride. Why does the Tall Man control every aspect of Mikes life? What does he want him for?
Also Mike is plagued by nightmare visions of the past, and discovers rapidly developing telekinetic powers, powers he finds he can use to conjure up the Tall Man's interdimensional spacegates.
We can see also that the Tall Man controls almost all of Mikes moves when the Tall Man tells him that "you go where I want you to go" Again..whats The Tall Mans purpose here?
Many of the series' mysteries are answered on Oblivion with the revelation that the Tall Man was once an ordinary undertaker, and that he built the interdimensional spacegate in an attempt to unlock the mysteries of life and death.
Still, many will be left with questions. Why did the Tall Man free Reggie after hed allready trapped him as seen in the ending of Phantasm III? What was the significance of the ball in Mike's head? Did Jody really die in a car accident? And what does it all really mean?
Some of the charm of these movies is not really knowing everything, but dammit sometimes I wonder if Coscarelli does have it all figured out in his mind and will eventualy reveal all in a possible part V.

About three years ago Campbell and Coscarelli began plotting a collaboration, this was way back when Coscarelli co-wrote with Roger Avary the big budget screenplay for "Phantasm V," which had a juicy role in it for Campbell.
This from Coscarelli himself:
"The idea was to sort of combine the 'Evil Dead' and 'Phantasm' franchises by bringing him in to fight the Tall Man. The fans of both series would go crazy for that! But then you pitch it to executives and their eyes glaze over. Success in the genre is both a blessing and a curse. I'm always able to get funding for further 'Phantasm' movies at a certain budget level, but it also marks you as a little too cultish in the eyes of the Hollywood big shots."
But I guess that Coscarelli never got the money (even after he re-wrote the script to make the budget cheaper) and I guess that also gives you an idea of just how hard it will be to get Phantasms End made. Maybe Bubba-Ho-Tep's success will help get this project finally off the ground.

To be totally honest, I don`t even think Coscarelli still wants to do "Phantasm`s End". Right now he`s talking about making a "Bubba Ho-Tep" sequel.
I think maybe he`s finally trying to move away from "Phantasm" Land. Can`t say I blame him, after all, he spent HOW MANY years of his life making "Phantasm" sequels. Maybe he`s finally gotten tired of The Tall Man & co.

This is one of my favorite movie series, I love reading other peoples idea of the story some interesting stuff I never thought of, I was always with the one about the Tall Man wanting Mike to take his place. And before I go I find it very sad that they can't get money to make Phantasms End when you see all the other crap that gets budgets.

i'd much rather see Campbell in a Phantasm then a FvJ, but to avoid off topic plague I'll get away fast from this mentioning... Studios won't give the film an okay budget with reasoning, this franchise does NOT bring in any money, and hasn't since the 2nd, so why waste cash?

The Phantasm series is one of my favorite horror film, especially with the 1st one! The 2nd one was fun, but I missed Mike Baldwin and the 3rd was humorous, and a bit tacky, but great. The 4th one really stumped me, even more than the 1st. I have no clue what was going on, but wrote a theory on why the Tall Man wants Mike, and I do believe that he wants Mike to take his place:
I wrote a long theory on what I believe is The Tall Man's true purpose with Mike is...
You can view it here! (http://www.livejournal.com/community/lordofthedead/2657.html)
