View Full Version : Are the majority of movie buffs Democrats?

In my experience, most movie buffs are liberal (maybe not 100% liberal, but decidedly more liberal than conservative). I'm not speaking of mere fans; I'm referring to people who love movies enough to go out of their way to post on message boards such as this one. Would it be fair to assume that most of us are liberals? For starters, we feel strongly about censorship. Most conservatives take everything at face value, and fail to see the artistic merit behind certain graphic films (unless it's a realistic portrayal of historical events, of course...The Passion, Saving Private Ryan, etc.). Skimming the "gay marriage" thread, I find that most of us are opposed to the idea of interdicting gay marriages. Those are just a couple of social issues, though. I fear painting too broad of a stroke.
If there's any truth to this hypothesis, then why do most movie fans impugn most conservative views? Is it because we hold art in high esteem, whereas most Republicans pass certain works of art off as blasphemous imagery? What's the connection? I hail from horror circles, so perhaps it's just genre fans that give me this impression.

I get that impression too. You could argue that moviefans who are more open minded about certain movies/genres and are willing to expand their film horizon, are more open minded as well about many other things, making them more liberal than conservative.
Though I personally lean more towards the right, but do consider myself to be more open minded about art and am against government censorship
I'm somewhat conservative in my views, but I've voted for both liberal and conservative candidates. I think many movie buffs are free thinkers, meaning they are open to new ideas, but in true human fashion, they hold some traditions and values in higher regard than others. The best fans are ones who will try a little of everything, to me. Kind of like watching films.

I'm conservative. And what it's really all about is less government, when I think of censorship or even the PTC I think of Tipper Gore and Lieberman, respectively, both of which are democrats.
George W. is a butchered shadow of true conservatism.
For the most part, though, entertainment has alot more outspoken liberals than conservatives.

I forgot about the "parental advisory" debacle. Good point, though Tipper's faction of bored housewives didn't propose censorship; they merely appealed for warning labels. A sticker doesn't censor anything. Granted, these stickers lead to censorship, but I don't feel that it was as tragic as metalheads made it out to be.
Not even a full paragraph, and I still managed to ramble. I think I just had a conversation with myself.

Quick point. Tipper and the PMRC DID propose censorship, initially. They SETTLED for labels.
