Can you elaborate on this? Are these 2 movies somehow related or do you just hate American Splendor?
I loved American Splendor.
As for Napolean Dynamite, am I the only one getting a wanna-be-Wes Anderson vibe from watching the previews?

I saw Napoleon Dynamite and I thought that it was pretty funny. There were some scenes that were kinda slow, but just listening to his voice and the way he speaks to people is hilarious. And there's a dancing scene that just made the entire movie. I liked it.

This movie looks pretty funny, from some of the reviews i've heard about this movie it is very mean spirited and trite at some points especially the main character and why he is a misfit because he acts it to perfection around everybody. But in a way this movie looks like something Wes Anderson might have done and i am very interested to see this movie when it comes out.

Yes and no. MTV jumped on board after the movie was finished. I think the people with Napoleon Dynamite figured that with the MTV name attached to the movie, it would attract more people to see it.

I was initially worried that this movie wouldn't be that great with a PG rating. The PG rating only ads to the humor of the movie, since Napoleon is such a nerd and says stupid things, instead of obscenities. This movie was an absolute blast. It ranks right up there with Rushmore and Royal Tanenbaums. I definitely recommend going to see it...in fact if you go to the movie's website, you might be able to check it out for free. They are doing a ton of promotional freebie showings, so check it out to see if they will be playing it for free around your town. It's so worth it!

Wow, I was supposed to attend a screening of this last night and I fell asleep by accident! Thats never happened before.

06-29-2004, 05:46 PM
I got to see Napoleon at a screening a couple weeks ago, which landed me a cool new t-shirt, which was very cool. About two hundred people showed up for the screening and only half of them made it into the theater which was sad, but I'm glad I got in--CONSIDERING the screening which was held a week before was packed and I wasn't able to see the movie.
I laughed the entire time. There's so many nerd jokes that many people aren't going to find funny, but that's ok, this movie isn't for everyone in the first place.
Aside from that, there've been five screenings in the past few weeks for the movie here at different theaters, and each screening has different t-shirts. And if you wear the t-shirt from the previous screenings, you can win prizes and such. I thought that was cool. It was sweet, the sweetest screening I've ever seen! :D

My friends and I saw a free screening tonight and there was quite a cult following. Everyone else had tshirts from their previous screenings, so I was excited to get a super cool tshirt like theirs. Instead, we got a "Vote for Summer. With me it will be Summer all year long!!!" shirt that looks very girly and its white, which will stain easily. The movie itself was funny - the cult followers laughed at non-funny moments which hurt a little. The ending was hilarious and perfect for so many reasons. You definitely have to see this little indie gem.

SPOILERS!
I don't think I have ever hated a movie this much. I may have a new least favorite movie of all-time. I did not enjoy a single second of this movie. It made me angry. There is not a moment that didn't feel completely artificial and manufactured to me. Nothing felt authentic or genuine. I never believed that one of these people could be real. The lead performance is one of the worst acting jobs I've ever witnessed. His half-closed eyes, his voice and expressions, his constant abrasiveness and perpetual state of annoyance with everyone and everything, I hated it. Never before have I felt this strongly about humor being subjective. I loathed these people, as well as those who made the movie. This seemed like some young hip dude's idea of a funny movie. There is no narrative momemtum. It just meanders along, going nowhere fast. The situations all felt forced and phony. I felt like I was being beaten over the head, told to laugh over and over and over again. No one would really do that, of course, but damn we thought it was funny. Isn't it funny? Um, no. One of the worst movies ever made.

Think i know why one shmoe is getting the American Splendor vibe . Both films look to celebrate and rely on the deadpan , stone faced delivery lead nerd for it's appeal , and all i have to say is , AS blew chunks every which way but loose , it was like a sleeping pill . This character in ND could prob be the younger version of the Crumb dude in AS , and that's not a good thing .
But i disagree with Mad , i've seen the lead in an interview , and he couldn't be more diff , so i have to give credit where it's due , from what i've seen he nailed the perf , although i still don't want to see it .

Disagree with me on what? That he gives a terrible performance? Have you seen it? I don't care how different he is in real life. I hated the way he plays the part. I loved it and may go see it again. It most definately is off beat humor and will surely disappoint those who love the Will Smith, "Wild Wild West/MIB" type humor.
It's humor is in it's odditity and nerdness.
If the punchlines in movies that make you laugh end in "Well, Fuck you bitch" or the Knock, Knock joke from "Catch me if you can" then you won't see that in this film.
It's dry humor. Some will get it, some won't, some will but won't like it, whatever.
I for one thought that for $400,000 and his first movie since his student film (which is a similar story with the same archetype and goal), they did a pretty good job.
I can't wait to see what they can do when their budget is more than half a million bucks, because like it or not, it sure beats alot of the multi million dollar flicks out there that fail IMHO.
Now give me some of your tots or I'll sic my liger on you.

I have no problem with that type of humor. I don't really like Will Smith humor. And trust me, I get it. I just didn't find it funny. It didn't seem organic and natural to me. It seemed so calculated and forced, like, what wacky thing would be funny now, never mind if it fits with what's been going on. Maybe that doesn't make sense.

Yeah, the Passion of the Christ just wasn't funny at all. I didn't get any of the jokes.;)
It didn't seem organic and natural to me.
I don't think it was supposed to. Maybe it was but having it set in the early 80's and having Kip on his "home computer" chatting with "hot babes" and being sent only a head shot of Lafonda kinda told me that it wasn't altogether based on being organic or natural or truthful reality.
Kinda like a "Dumb and Dumber" quasi reality where although set in a real seeming world, what happens isn't really all that plausible.
I kinda thought of it as a "World According to Garp" but with actual humor and less drama.

i couldn't agree with the 3 of you more. a friend and i had been oddly drawn in by the commercials, so we went to check it out at a late showing on friday. the theatre was packed and it seemed like everyone there loved the movie. i couldn't stop laughing the entire time. i mean, from the opening titles on (cheesy food + one of my favorite white stripes songs = i'm in) i was totally engaged. parts of the movie were just flat out hilarious. i'm at a loss of how to describe it or exactly why it's funny, and i can definitely understand people who just didn't like it, but DAMN i loved this movie.

I am almost never a person who says that dislike of a movie is the fault of the viewer. I pretty much chalk things up to subjective perspectives.
But, if you couldn't find anything to laugh at in this movie you have problems. What a fresh take on the nerd story. Usually hollywood puts glasses on Freddy Prinze Jr. and calls him a nerd. This kid plays a real nerd and not just a nerd a genuinely unlikeable person.
This is a subversive film and character and almost every scene has something to laugh at. If you didn't find it funny, look harder and deeper because the humor is there.

I sure as hell don't need anyone else to tell me what is or isn't funny. Saying that those who don't find this funny have problems is not only against the rules on this board, it is a ludicrous, false and just plain stupid comment to make. I highly resent it and think you owe people an apology. Though I agree that Hollywood usually just slaps glasses on someone to make them a nerd, I did not find Napoleon to be genuine at all. Same with the movie. I found it to be completely artificial. I didn't buy a second of it. And believe me, I got it, no matter how subversive you think it is. It's not that deep. You need to seriously reconsider what you say around here.

Yesterday I went into the city to check out Napoleon Dynamite and Donnie Darko: Director's Cut. Needless to say it was one of the best movie going experiences ever.
Napoleon Dynamite is about this high school kid who... well I'm not even exactly sure about the plot of this movie, but what i can tell you is its fucking hilarious. Jon Heder should get some heavy recognition for this role. While he did play a unique character, a will admit that at times I was getting bored with the flick and Napoleon's funny but one-note tune. This is where the supporting cast really comes into play, for whenever i started feeling this boredom, there was always someone who would show up and act like an (GOSH!) idiot. I'd give Napoleon Dynamite a 7.5/10.

Finally saw it today, too predictable and repetitive.
Here's my review off my website www.cinematichell.blogspot.com
Here comes a low-budget indie film that hit wide release almost a month ago. It still hasn't gotten nearly as much distribution as your latest action flick (and never will), but it's possible for most people to see it now. Director and Writer Jared Hess casts a story of a loser, Dynamite Napoleon (played by first-time actor Jon Heder) and makes a stretch to show you how low thrill and unsuccessful his life is. You've all seen the commercial before, so if you didn't like what you saw, back off now; this is nothing more than merely an extended skit. There are hints of how the movie will end and I figured it out long before it hit the screen (ok it's not a thriller, but there should've been something I didn't think would happen). With that in mind, this one makes you laugh at how disfunctional and uncoordinated the characters can be. Pedro (Elfren Ramirez) is a new exchange student in Napoleon's school, and he starts off his first day being yelled at by the principal as if he were deaf. Oh and let's not forget, Grandma went on an ATV frenzy in the dunes, so she broke her something and Uncle Rico is there to fill in. If you feel like rewinding the times to when cassettes would always tag along with headsets, $1 stores were a galore, and tight jeans meant you were slick and mean, go for it! Oh and the movie is accompanied with elevator music throughout. This one isn't perfect though, reviewers raved about how this is an innocent film that can be funny without being tasteless. Whether it was intentional or not, there's parts suggesting pedophilia and racism: 1) Uncle Rico drives very slowly up to two teenage girls, where it seems like he's up to no good, but in reality he's giving out breast supplement flyers. Similar thing happens with another girl, where he slowly unbuttons his vest, only to give her the same flyer hidden deep within his coat. 2) LaFawnduh (as if the name didn't already hint at racism), Kip's internet pal, spices up an old nerdy fella and makes him into a Enyce Steve Martin, like in Bringing Down the House. Oh and Pedro, the Hispanic foreign student I was talking about, has a chat with the principal for putting up pinatas of his classmate, Summer (to be whacked to death). After the chat is over, he tells Napoleon that this sort of pinata-person arrangement is typical in Mexico. And the other problem, how did this attract Sundance-goers? It's on the same level as Dumb and Dumberer. Overall, Napoleon produces small explosions, and this is quite an accomplishment for a small project. And the producer wasn't greedy either; the website gave away free screenings and t-shirts for a good period of time. However, don't hope for a smooth ride, it's a bit bumpy. Don't listen to me though, do whatever you feel like... ...gawsh!

Why do I need to reconsider what I say around here? I'll answer that. I don't. I merely expressed my dislike for this movie. That is all. If you liked it, fine, I never called anyone a name for liking it or insulted them for liking it. My criticism was directed entirely at the movie, as it should be. So I need to reconsider absolutely nothing.

MTV's involvement got people who would have never even heard of the movie, much less seen it, to go and see it. They wouldn't have even wanted to see it had they stumbled across a trailer. When I saw it, there were about 75 people in the audience. 95% were under 18 and at least half of them were female. Without MTV, they are not at the movie. They were giggly, squealing and obnoxious morons who never stopped laughing, because they thought that's what they were supposed to do, because everyone told them it was hilarious. Napoleon would stand up or open a doorknob, and they would just bust out. This has nothing to do with the quality of the movie. I am not trying to relate the two. I'm just commenting on MTV's participation.

Not really, I actually don’t care what people think about me, because I know that I can beat the shit out of someone if they take it too far. :D
I only defend myself if it demeans my moral character or ethical motivation. In your case, they’re criticizing your opinion, that's barely anything; I just don’t think it matters enough to post a reply to every person that goes against what you believe. It’s just my thoughts, nothing personal. ;)

To get back on topic,
When I saw it, there were about 75 people in the audience. 95% were under 18 and at least half of them were female. Without MTV, they are not at the movie.
I don’t necessarily agree with that. When I went to my ND screening, WAY before it was on MTV, the theater was FULL of different types of people with different ages.
Some went from 13 and 14 YO ( there was a lot of them), to 40 and 50 YO and (there was enough of them)… And there was a creepy homeless person there that, apparently, sees every screening of every movie that comes out in Arizona.
So, my point is before the movie was even on MTV there was a massive following of fans, people wearing the shirts, and quoting the movie and such.

What specifically don't you agree with? The number of people at the showing I saw, and their gender and age? Or that MTV got them there? It has been on MTV for a very long time. So how is it that you saw it WAY before it was on MTV? And would you really say that it had a massive following before the ads were shown on MTV? I would have to strongly disagree with that. There was a very small cult following. Not a massive one. Not even close. And yes, the people I saw it with would never have seen this movie without MTV's participation. The giggling and squealing teenage girls would never have been there without MTV. I bet it was the first time they had ever set foot inside an art house theater. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with that. I don't think my younger sister has ever set foot inside an art house theater, nor would she want to. I'm just saying, no ads on MTV, no teen girls at the movie.

I don’t agree with this.

I pointed out that I saw the movie WAY before I even saw the trailer on MTV. And when I saw the movie, their was a bunch of people their, there wasn’t a seat left in the theater! I was
e-mailed news from foxsearchlight.com saying that they were going to have adds showed on MTV after I saw the movie with HHH123007. Ask him if you don’t believe me.
Without MTV, they are not at the movie
I also didn’t agree with this statement. As I said before, there were plenty of people of different ages at the theater BEFORE I the trailer was on MTV.
They were giggly, squealing and obnoxious morons who never stopped laughing
This, I do agree with, but barely.

How could you not agree with it? They were at the showing I saw, so unless you're accusing my of lying, you'd have to agree with it. MTV got people who would otherwise never have gone to this movie to see it. People like my younger sister who otherwise only see mainstream movies at the multiplex. The people I saw this movie with were only there because of MTV. Maybe your screening was different. MTV started showing ads a long time ago, so you must have seen it around March.

Take it to PM's or talk about ND.
I want Napoleon Dynamite to run for president in the upcomming election.
He or Pedro. It'd be a tough decision if they both ran against each other.
Kerry/Edwards
Bush/Cheney
ND/Pedro whateveryournameis.
I vote for ND/Pedro!
Plus I'd want to see him dance on stage after he won.
I HOPE they have Napoleon Dynamite present at the Teen Choice Awards and (praying) the OSCARS!

I just saw it a second time today with my friend who hadn't seen it before. He friggen loved it. We also saw the extra few minutes after the movie.
Spoilers concerning the extra few minutes
It was hilarious that they brought the indian guy (the guy who you can't understand at the chicken farm) back. Kip's song was pretty funny too. The thing that cracked me up was how the ending all of a sudden stopped so quickly, right in the middle of the background music. Maybe it was just my theatre that did that.
End of spoilers
Anyways, this movie is still one of the funniest movies ever made in my opinion. My grade still stands at a 9/10 but I might bump it up a point cause I love this movie so much.

Saw it the day after opening day, and I couldn't help but be dissapointed. A lot of the stuff I found to be very funny was already in the trailers. Kip was great, much funnier than Napoleon. Haley Duff aka Summer is beautiful. Pedro was funny. But overall, I don't know I just wasn't completly feeling it.
6.5/10
I saw ND today and I have to say, it was not good. The characters were funny in premise and well played and I found meeting them was amusing, but I wish something funny was given for them to do. I felt they sat on screen and I was supposed to laugh a lot because of how weird they were. Napolean I felt was not likeable. People treated him like shit, but he treated everyone else like shit too, so I didn't give a shit about him. There was just nothing amusing for me to find in this thing. 5/10
Also, what was with the 80's music? It occured to me this movie could've been set in any of the last three decades if it wasn't for the mention of the internet. Wouldn't have made the movie any funnier, but could've been interesting nonetheless.

Disappointing.

Phew, I am glad I am not the only person who found this movie incredibly crappy and not worthy of all the praise it's getting. I even wanted to walk out about a quarter of the way through, but I controlled myself. The lead character is an unlikeable dick, there is zero plot or character development, and NOTHING was funny or amusing to me in the entire film. Am I supposed to think it's hilarious simply because a miserable guy sleepwalks through a movie bitching about everything? No, thanks. For a comedy, I cannot remember one memorable line of dialogue, which is pathetic. The nail in the coffin for me was his little 'dance sequence' and the completely movie-like unrealistic response to it. Meh.
Total crappola.

God this movie sucked. It just sat there with one random moment of offbeat humor after another that was just there because it's offbeat. The main character was fucking unlikeable as hell and I wanted to smash him in the face after every single antisocial action he performs (the part with him throwing food at the llama was almost a final straw). Even the supporting characters like his brother and uncle just pissed me off.
...Or at least, that's how I felt for in the first hour, after which it got better. I did like some of the songs in it and the dance sequence at the end, but I was terribly disappointed by it. Though since I'm one of the few people who doesn't get into Wes Anderson's flicks might explain why.

I think there should be a "Brown Bunny" award at this year's awards ceremonies.
"This year, the first annual Brown Bunny award is given to the movie most hacked to crap before it was released in theatres, and subsequently kicked much more ass when it was shown as it was meant to be."
At my showing there was EXTREMELY obvious evidence that a lot of scenes had gotten hacked, and my girl (who'd heard some news about the flick) mentioned a couple scenes had apparently been ripped since she'd heard from earlier showings.
This year's nominees for the Brown Bunny award:
1)Brown Bunny (Ebert went from "worst movie I've ever seen" to "thumbs up").
2)Napoleon Dynamite (Which was cut down for whatever reason).
3)Alien Versus Predator (When studios decide to be such gluttons that they cut a Paul Anderson flick to make it have more pop appeal, we're one stop closer to Armageddon- maybe if there's ever that famed director's cut, we can all breathe easier).
4)The Exorcist (okay, it doesn't really qualify, but we HOPE TO GOD the other version can't be worse).

I guess some people will "Get" it and others won't. There isn't a plot, but that's because the movie can carry on the character's backs, etc.
Just such a wonderful movie.

For the love of God and everything holy, do not start this "get it" bullshit. I "got" the movie and I still hated it with every bone in my body. This is not a difficult movie to understand. It's not complex. How does hating it mean you didn't get it? Just a weak defense used when some people despise a movie you love.

Well I am in the Loved It camp on this one.
I disagree with people who say it didn't have a plot or that the characters were not develped.
This movie fits with my Monty Python Theory.
Some people hate MP some love it.
I could use the term get it but that is very subjective.
Everyone sees things differently, so if you feel someone didn't get it maybe they just didn't experience it the way you did because they didn't live your life.
Some feel this movie is flat, boring, nothing going on, etc.
I feel it is lush there are many things to look at and it can be viewed multiple times. Subtle is the word.
But hey everyone is entitled to their view of it I won't call people dumb becasue they didn't like it.
Some complain that this movie is not like other movies, I say fantastic!
I am sick of the Hollywood regurgitation treadmill of late.
I would almost watch something different even if it was total crap just so I could see something new, instead of remakes from 20 years ago.
This movie could crack me up with a single look from Napoleon, or even a single word, it was brilliant.
Some people don't like that style of comedy, I do.
This is a love it hate it movie no doubt, but I would love to see the further adventures of Napoleon and Pedro!
And you gotta love that time machine!

Napoleon Dynamite, is about an odd young man named Napoleon Dynamite. Napoleon, is in high school and is considered a geek and has no friends. He lives with his older brother Kip, who spends all his time talking to girls in chat rooms. Their grandmother takes care of them and while she is hurt while racing in the sand dunes their Uncle Rico, is sent to come take care of them. Napoleon, spends his free time drawing and feeding the family's pat llama. He also wears tight pants pulled up to his waist and moon boots A new Mexican student named Pedro, soon comes to the school and becomes Napoleon's friend. And soon Pedro, starts running for school president and as his only friend Napoleon is helping along the way. Meanwhile a girl named Deb, seems to have a crush on Napoleon, and his Uncle Rico, is embarassing his school life by going around town to different homes trying to sell tupperware and later on breast enhancements. Napoleon, plans to rise above his bizarre family life and to prove to the school that he is not a geek and to help Pedro, win the election against the snotty competetor named Summer. Winner of The Film Discovery Jury Award for Best Feature at The U.S. Comedy Arts Festival. Napoleon Dynamite, has good direction, a good script and good performances by everyone involved (especially Jon Heder, who plays Napoleon Dynamite). Napoleon Dynamite, is an independent film and only opened in select cities back in June, but since then has gotten a cult following from the small theaters it has played at. I was interested in the film so I e-mailed my local theater to see if they were going to get it and they replied back and told me they weren't. A month later they got it. When, Napoleon Dynamite first started it was very slow and it shows us the bizarre lives of these characters and at first I didn't know if I liked the film or not. But as time went on I grew to liking it to loving it. Napoleon Dynamite, is a good satire of high school and different people in it, it is entertaining, funny, very creative, unique, has a great feature debut by Jon Heder, and a great first debut for the filmmakers, is sweet, quirky and overall a brilliant satire and a touching and fun film. This film is doing well in select cities and it deserves to and I hope it turns into a big hit like My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Napoleon Dynamite, is one of the best films of the year and one of the most unique.

Definitely not my kind of movie.
It's pretty pointless, there's no plot . . . only a dull scene after a dull scene after a dull scene after a dull scene. None of the characters felt developed (real, who knows, but not developed). It had a great ending, some funny bits (not sure if I was laughing with or at the movie though), cool music, good acting, interesting directing . . .
