Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension--which version should I watch?

I just picked up this movie. The DVD offers the option to watch the version as shown in theaters, and the extended version. Keeping in mind that I've never seen it before, which is better and why?

I'd pick up the extended edition if I were you. There are scenes in the extended version that give the plot a little more cohesion. But, keep in mind that I haven't watched either version in about 2 years, even though I own the DVD.
Be warned: This flick has no words to describe it...
