View Full Version : Pokémon: The Movie 2000

I have a confession to make: I like Pokémon. Don't take that in the wrong context. I don't like the card game at all, but I do enjoy the GameBoy game, and even the Pokémon Stadium Nintendo 64 game. Saying this, I do know what this Pokémon "thang" is about, and I even enjoy a few of the more "monstrous" creatures (Blastoise & Gyarados), and I even enjoy one of the smaller, kiddier ones (Even at age 15, Psyduck cracks me up).
Anyway, Pokémon: The Movie 2000 is the follow-up to last year's successful Pokémon: The First Movie. In that film, the genetically engineered Pokémon escaped from his holding place on "New Island" and attempted to clone the world's best Pokémon so that he could take over the world.
Mewtwo was defeated by young trainer Ash Ketchum with the combonation of ever-powerful Pokémon and a few too many morals, but it got the job done.
In this sequel, Ash is back, as is Misty from the previous film and a new hero called Tracy. Ash retains his Pokémon arsenal from the last adventure, though it seems his Charizard is no obedient.
The plot is as followed: An evil scientist once again wishes to control the world. To do this, he wishes to catch the three "Legendary Bird" Pokémon, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Once he has done this, he will release a hidden fourth bird, one which controls the weather, called Lugia.
With the weather at his control, he believes he will conquer the world. Of course, Ash Ketchum finds out, and its now a race of wits of rescuing Lugia and some orb subplot that I must have missed getting concessions.
Seeing the film immediately after the special effects (though I was underimpressed) X-Men, I was surprised Pokémon: The Movie 2000 held up so well. Its animation is of a very Japanese style, and I actually enjoyed the antics of most of the characters.
Called Pokémon X: Revelation Lugia in Japan, Pokémon: 2000 is a pleasing adventure that adults can enjoy like children and, luckily, isn't as heavy on the morals as the previous Pokémon: The First Movie was.
Yet again the film is preceeded by a short, I think this one was called Pikachu Explorers, again, I didn't arrive until 5 minutes into the film, but even that was entertaining. Pikachu and friends must escape a burning forest in time. Its much better animated than Pikachu's Vacation, even though it is simply a way to introduce new Pokémon for the upcoming Pokémon Gold & Silver versions.
A nice film, Pokémon: The Movie 2000 might actually entertain teenagers who don't understand the whole aspect of it. Who would've thought that?
POKEMON: THE MOVIE 2000 - 7.5/10

POKEMON: THE FIRST MOVIE - 4/10

But don't you see Yvonne, that is marketing at its worst. And the people who pay money to see films like that, they tell Hollywood to keep making cheesy, corny, crapy films like that. Save Pokemon for videogames. To make it into a film is an insult to us film buffs. Its really insulting.
Mr. Meat
07-17-2000, 06:16 PM
Even for kids I doubt it would be an enjoyable expierience. And you being a parent I would think it would get you a little ticked off cause all that film is saying to kids is to buy more Nintendo games and products. It's a cheap (yet so very expensive) trick.

It's kind of like on South Park. The Japanese are selling the Chinpokomon to brainwash kids with subliminal messages so that they can teach the kids to fly and bomb pearl harbor. And if we complain, they make us feel good by telling us what giant penises we have. I know. It's happened to me many a time.
Mr. Meat
07-17-2000, 11:59 PM
That was a good comparison lol. But really, to take that crap to the big screen is like poisoning a beautiful creature. It's wrong and upsetting to see the film industry use that kind of gimmick on film goers. Even for children. Doesn't it make people mad? Retard? Yvonne? 007? ANYBODY?

Well, I like Pokemon, and I very much hope that Pokemon 2000 isn't the shitball that Pokemon: The First Movie was. I'd think that 4/10 is too good. Maybe 2/10. And I'm being generous. (wonder if JoBlo will write a review of 2000)

I cannot believe this topic has had this many hits. Come on people - if you are above the age of 6 then how can you even admit to liking this shit. I mean - what the hell??? This is eye level with Teletubbies!
I'm kind of upset now so I think I'll go post something on the rant board.

Actually, Scarface, Pokémon 3: The Lord of the Unknown Tower just came out in Japan, so we can expect that within six months. Pokémon 4 is in the "scripting" (I use that term loosely) stage.

My little brother is all into Pokemon, along with all his friends. I actually have nothing against it because I know if I was a kid, I'd be all over it too. Plus, I played some of the games, and thought they were pretty adictive. It did knock me on my ass when I heard they were making a second one though.

Crynot....i like teletubbies too...i think they are cute! Mr Meat: i dont take my daughter to the theatre to see Pokemon, we rented it as soon as it came on video. I dont care about them trying to sell video games...They sold all kinds of crap for scream and sleepy hollow...its the same thing. I know how to tell Angel (my kid) no. My sister thinks pokemon is evil sent from the devil. whatever....i am not attacking anyone here. I know the difference between good movies ie, the ones i like, and the ones that make my kid quiet....lol....with 3 kids and a nephew i babysit, quiet is golden in my house! /ubb/smile.gif yvonne

I just think that Pokemon is the dumbest thing to come this way since the Macarena. It's stupid, pointless, confusing, not to mention annoying. What is the attraction? How can you actually sit down and watch this crap? How can you allow your children to watch it? It's stupid and mind-numbing. I used to think that TV and movies couldn't make you dumber, but I saw five minutes of a Pokemon episode, and couldn't ad 2+2 for a week! It's true, it's true.

07-22-2000, 04:50 PM
I should worry about what you let them watch. I don't Pokemon to become the biggest thing here in America. I don't want to have every channel broadcast Pokemon at 4:00. Every Pokemon movie that they make means one less theater to play another movie I might want to see. Plus, I've made many enemies at my school because of Pokemon.
Ex. dumbass 1: I actually cried at the Pokemon movie last night.
dumbass 2: I know. Wasn't it sad when Ash turned into a rock?
me: SHUT UP!!!!
And just to let you know, those people were 14!
Mr. Meat
07-22-2000, 04:54 PM
retard you bring up a good topic. see, at my high scgool there are so many Pokemon fanatics, which isn't a bad thing (I guess) but its not a good thing either. I'm a Junior and even some of my friends like that crap and when I tell them to stop paying money for all the merchandize so the craze will stop they shun me on. It is marketing at its worst like I stated.

Pokemon has affected me. At my school, I used to like to take in Sports cards so at breaks I could trade and sell with my friends. But because so many people were playing with Pokemon cards during class, they banned all cards from school. It sucked.
yvonne
07-22-2000, 07:50 PM
there are enough damn theatres in the world to show all movies...so now your pissed off because you are banned from bringing cards to school...poor baby..school is for learning not trading cards...do it at home after school....pokemon is just another fad, it will die out soon..i mean look at power rangers...og my god i hated them, but they arent popular anynore...something else will come along..and pokemon will die....dont worry about what my kids watch because you dont pay for it, I do....If you dont like the cards or merchandise, dont buy it...its that simple. I dont buy them. Its just a tv show and 2 movies....not a natural disaster
Mr. Meat
07-22-2000, 08:35 PM
Ouch. Well thats where your partially wrong, Yvonne. Cause it does affect everybody. We weren't arguing the fact that we want to dictate your kids or whatever. Yes its true, if you don't like it, don't watch it. And I don't. But when that crud enters filming thats where I have to draw the line. And I wasn't really talking about you and your child's life, I was talking about the majorety of kids out there that see it. And yes it is a fad and will soon run dry, but its been lasting for over 5 years (in Japan and America) so thats a pretty long fad, don't you think? Enough is enough. And just 2 movies is not a natural disaster, but as ANTBond007 stated, there are more films to come. Hope everybody enjoys the ride, I sure don't.

Nice point Meat. Yvonne, I wasn't directing my statement towards you and your kids, I was talking about all kids in general. I have a feeling that this fad will last a year or two longer, and that does not qualify as a fad. Pokemon is dumb. It's not like I'm saying that you are bad at parenting or something, I'm just saying that I don't see why parents would allow their children(children over 10 at least) to watch this crap. And I'm not whining that I can't trade and sell cards anymore, in fact I'm over that, but it's the point that Pokemon is affecting me. You saying that it has nothing to do with me is wrong.
yvonne
07-22-2000, 09:11 PM
i know no one was attacking my parenting but look at how long power rangers lasted.... i am just saying not every film ever made is going to be the best....we live in an imperfect world, but everyone deserves to make their movie...good or bad...
Mr. Meat
07-22-2000, 09:32 PM
ok I guess thats fair enough, but I still wouldn't call Pokemon a film. But I guess what would you expect? I still think it is still a cheap trick by Nintendo though.

Yvonne, I am not against that. Everyone should be able to make their films. But I think that Pokemon is like the tobacco industry. They capitalize on addiction. Kids get addicted to this crap, and the company that makes it is just flinging the crap at kids with a shovel, knowing that the kids will eat it right up. And Power Rangers you shouldn't compare because Power Rangers were not near as big as Pokemon. I didn't know of any fourteen year olds who liked Power Rangers.

LOL retard-in-Arizona (I got it too). That South Park take on Pokemon, dubbed Chinpokomon was hilarious. Gotta buy 'em, gotta buy 'em!
I look at Pokemon and kid's trends nowadays and I can't help but feel sorry for the little blighters. I had it good along with the rest of my generation during my childhood in the '80s with magnificent cartoon shows such as MASK, Transformers, Visionaries and Jayce And The Wheeled Warriors (to name a few). The '80s was definitely cartoon's heyday and IMHO nothing nowadays compares to cartoons from that period!
Pocket monster collecting & monster training. *Pfft!*

i saw something that was actuall true on snopes.com ....a episode of pokemon caused tons of kids here in the US with epilepsy to have siezures from red and blue flashing screen...i wasnt aware that kids were actually hurt seeing this tv show....they say they fixed it...but i just know know. do i take away my daughyers fave show (which she is bound to grow out of like barney and teletubbies) or do let her watch it and hope there arent any more dangerous episodes???i just dont know...maybe i will just let her watch the ones we have on tape.

Actually, Yvonne, it was only in Japan a few years back. It showed the main Pokemon, Pikachu on screen with flashing colors in the backround. It caused a lot of kids to "freak out", but fortunately there were no fatalities. In fact it set a Guiness record. That show of Pokemon never aired in the US.

Actually, scream, Pokémon isn't going anywhere. The sequel games Pokémon Gold & Silver come out October 5 (and have three times as many preorders as the console PlayStation2), Pokémon Puzzle League (Tetris Attack 2! Yeah!) and Hey You, Pikachu! come out for Nintendo 64 at the end of the year; Pokémon Stadium 2: Gold/Silver comes out early next year, and Wizards of the West Coast is releasing several new booster packs of trading cards this year.
Oh yeah, Pokémon: The Movie 2000 has made $40M so far;Pokémon 3: Emperor of the Crystal Tower comes out in April, 2001 and Pokémon 4 (a direct continuation of Pokémon 3's plot featuring Mewtwo) comes out January, 2002.

I hate pokemon haters! What the hell is wrong with kids watching pokemon? Its a story about a kid with a goal & cute little pocket monsters that can kick some ass!And i love how they show that you can do anything when you put your heart & soul into it thru ash.I know hes a goofy kid & all but hes really cool cause hes got a big heart & alot of determination. And i think that hes a cool role model for kids these days. The friendship he has with Pikachu is awesome,& is one of the reasons i & many others love this cartoon.I think alot of people out there just don't like animated programs because they think automatically its just stupid kids stuff & that pisses me off.Too many people out there haven't got opened minds, which is pretty sad.I get hassled about liking pokemon all the time by people?I think its because people always think animation is for kids only & that pisses me off.I've loved toons since i was kid,ya'know transformers,Dungeons & dragons,Thundercats & Scooby all that cool stuff.Well if kids love pokemon so much i think cool cause its alot better than Power rangers or Teletubbies.

I LOVE CARTOONS!!! Don't say that I think cartoons are stupid kids stuff because I don't. I think that cartoons are the fourth best things in the world behind music, movies, and poontang. South Park, B&B, R&S, X-Men, Life with Louie, Thundercats, and best of all Scooby Doo are some of my favorite shows. I realize that most cartoons are mind numbing, but that's what they are supposed to be. But Pokemon is mind-numbing, plus it, as said before in the discussion, is advertisement at its worst. Pokemon made more money last year than any other company or business in the world(I think it beat out even Microsoft.) It is mind-numbing at its low point. Even the catch phrase, "Gotta Catch/Buy/Find/Whatever 'Em All!" is telling kids to throw their parents' hard earned dollars down the drain with crap that they won't be able to do anything with when they are older. But it's not just that that annoys me, it's that the cartoon is just plain stupid, and not in the way that Beavis & Butthead or Ren& Stimpy are stupid, but in the way that it is meant to be fun and enjoyable but it's not. It isn't meant to be stupid, but it is. It has too much hype surrounding it, which makes it a part of our culture, which effects my life. Also the hype makes it crap. It is known fact that things that are hyped and hyped just eventually turn to crap(with a few exceptions). Pokemon, which was crap to begin with, is hyped and hyped now, which means it will keep getting worse and worse. Pokemon is addicting. Kids watch it once and they are hooked. I know because some of my former friends were sucked in. Pokemon will make our kids dumber, because no matter how stupid it gets, the people who are addicted will keep watching it, making them dumber every day. I know you will follow this up with some stupid "You've just never watched it" or "You're just afraid to conform" or the even worse "You're just stupid and have no taste" post, but let me ask you this: How old are you? If you are under ten, I understand. If you are 11-14, you have some sort of excuse. If you are 15-20, you are pathetic. If you are 21-30, you need to get a life. If you only watch it because your kids do(if you have kids), disregard what I have just said about the age thing.

Why is age a problem when it comes to cartoons?Yeah i watch pokemon & a whole lot of other stuff too like pulp fiction, fight club and other r18 type stuff but just because i watch pokemon makes me a bum?Damn who's the kid here?

Damn have you seen the cartoons they got out there these days? They got some real crap out there like rockos modern life, catdog & cow & chicken, when the kids switched on to these toons i thought what the f#ck is this crap? Some of the crap they go on about on these programs are a bit much for the understanding of these kids. All these sick cartoons on T.V these dayz ain't cool for kidz. And why the hell would you get dumber watching pokemon?Watching Beavis & Butthead now that would make you dumber man.No matter what your opinion on pokemon is,kidz like it cause its fun & enjoyable. And kidz will always have a toy or whatever for there parents to buy for them, whether it being pokemon,Dragon Ballz or Teletubbies.Anywayz i just wish people would be more open minded & let who ever like, what they want to like, being from pokemon to fave choice in music. /ubb/cool.gif

Oh, I have no problem with people liking Pokemon. I have no problem with people liking anything. But when some one(you for instance) calls me a fag because I hate Pokemon, I have got to stick up for myself. It's okay for anyone to like anything, as long as I am not involved. I have no problem with gay people, but when they start hitting on me, I have to do something(run away is the #1 option). It's the same with Pokemon. It's okay if you watch, play, collect Pokemon, just don't involve me with it. When Pokemon started affecting my life(it was stupid little things, but it still affected me), I had to do something. Now I am strongly Anti-Pokemon. I agree that most of the cartoons nowadays are pretty bad. Most of the Japanime cartoons suck(Dragonball z for instance), but the ones that are good are very good. Yes, Beavis and Butthead can make you dumber, but you know what you are getting ahead of time. You know that the content of it is adolescent and stupid. Beavis and Butthead wasn't meant for people under 12 or 13. But Pokemon, which is for kids anywhere from 2-10, is poisoning. It is stupid. What is the point? Ash, whom you called a role model, to me is like a crackhead. "GOTTA CATCH 'EM ALL!" "GOTTA GET MORE SMACK!" Is there a similarity to anyone else here? And Pikachu. What the hell is that thing anyway? Don't say it's a monster because it's not. What is it? Pokemon is confusing for people who don't watch it regularly, and it is extremely mind-numbing for children who watch it constantly. I feel that cartoons for kids that age should teach kids something. The only thing that Pokemon teaches is that if you have some problems, yell "Pikachu, I Choose You" and everything will be solved. It teaches kids nothing except that Japanese companies are ingenious. Whatever they put out, children will gobble up. And how can you say that Rocko's Modern Life, CatDog, and Cow & Chicken are crap, yet love Pokemon? Get a job. Get a life. And most importantly, get the F*$@ out of my face.
