A travesty. To each their own I guess.

Though I am happy to see that Kubrick was #1, Hitchcock should have been #2. Come to think of it, I don't think I voted for that poll, musta missed it.

There has to be something wrong with your list, Homer. I was the only one who voted for Chaplin (My 4th) and he was number 18... Did my 4th place give him that position? Anyway a very good list, I think. All of them are very good directors. But am I the only one to think that Smith is a great screenwriter, but not really such a great director?

Homer, have you though of using the lists that have been posted to "Best Directors" by Quentin? It has 63 posts so far, so you could have more voters in your poll.

I agree with you on that, Tuukka. Smith is DEFINITELY more of a great screenwriter than director...in fact, he always says the same thing himself! Mind you, he's definitely brought his own "feel" to most of his films and I suppose that comes from his director's POV, so there you go.

You are not the only one to vote for Chaplin Tuukka, but u placed him highest on ur list and did give him most of those 11 points.

Completely agreed about Smith, although in Dogma his directing was actually very good.

I can't believe that more people voted for John Carpenter than Bryan Singer. Doesn't anyone else like Singer as a director?

The thing about Chaplin: I'm not sure if anyone else voted but I realized I had forgotten him so I think I may have added a point to his score and taken away one from Kevin Smith (my #10) who I also think is an awesome screenwriter but just a "good" director.

Also Tuukka that is a great idea, I'll do that.

Homer, the only problem with going back to the one list is that many peopl have changed their thoughts on best director. I for one have.

I have a question for you guys: What makes a great director? I always listed my top director by the quality of the films they make, which is why I have Kevin Smith so high on my list. If it goes by creativity and originality, why not list the Wachowski(sp?) Brothers? Because The Matrix was innovative, original, and creative.

Homer, what system did you use to tally the votes? I got Terry Gilliam as having 15 votes(16 if you include the vote of 11th place).

Ok, first of all: The Matrix wasn't all that original. The Matrix somewhat rips off Dark City, which was made a year and a half before it.

Second: yes I made a mistake Terry Gilliam does have 15 points and I will put him on the list.

And about what makes a great director, for me it's this: you look at the movie, then you look at how good the script is. Now, if you feel the script wasn't THAT great but you LOVED the movie, you've got yourself a great director. The Shining is a perfect example.

Now, that's not to say that if the script is awesome the movie's directing is poor. Of cource the best thing about The Usual Suspects was the script, but Bryan Singer is a great director. In fact, if I had seen more than 1 of his movies I would have probably put him on my Top 10 list.

OK, then how about if the script is awesome AND the movie was awesome? Does that mean that the directing wasn't great? I think that a good director is someone who can turn what is on the pages of the script into a movie well. I list Kevin Smith as my favorite director because in my opinion he has never made a bad movie. Your system is unfair to him because the scripts he writes are always so great that the movie can't be much better than the scripts.

Where is Cameron Crowe? I know he has only made three movies but they have all been great. Ditto for Terrence Mallik.

I just voted, Homer, so you can take that in count if you'd like to.

This thread is over a year old and Homer is no longer with us, thus it is a moot point.
