I'm rereading the book for the umpteenth time right now and I have been thinking about this... Here are some thoughts.

* We already know that the Dursleys have been completely cut from the movie, so I think it will start at the Weasley's with Harry preparing for the Quidditch World Cup.

*There's no way they can cut the QWC, it's just too important. With the introduction of Bagman, Crouch, Krum, the Death Eaters, Winky, and the Dark Mark. There is just no way.

*I think S.P.E.W. will be completely cut. It just would serve no purpose in this movie. Hermione's love of house elves does not have anything to do with Voldemort's elaborate plans of rebirth.

* Rita Skeeter, while one of the most interesting characters, may see a dramatic downsize from book to movie. She will probably still be there, but I doubt they'll reveal she's an animagus, once again, it's just not that important.

* Hagrid's background will be downsized. I have a feeling that there will be mention of Hagrid's being a half giant, but I doubt it will be taken as seriously as it was in the book.

* Ron's infatuation with Fluer will probably be left out. Once again, it just doesn't have anything to do with the main story. I think the Yule Ball could be cut as well, if they do in fact cut Ron/Fluer and Hagrid's background.

That's what I think will be cut. Any thoughts? I can't wait to come back to this thread in Nov. 2005 and see how wrong I was. ;)

This is definitely a storyline that comes to mind as something they would cut. She even makes an appearance in book 5 that could also be cut.

Considering that filming has began and Bagman and Rita Skeeter's castings weren't announced with the rest, they will probably be cut out.

Knowing Hollywood these days, I wouldn't be surprised if they cut Voldemort rising again for time...:(

Rita Skeeter has been cast, she is played by Miranda Richardson. So that is some good news there.

They won't cut out the Yule Ball. They have already cast the people who play their dates (the two Indian girls). Also it is an important scene because it is the climax of the Ron-Hermoine-Krum triangle. It is the first time they feature Hermoine as a teen as opposed to a pre-teen.

Keep in mind that the director was cast specifically to develop the relationships between the different characters. His previous experience includes "Four Weddings and a Funeral".

Hagrid's background will be downsized. I have a feeling that there will be mention of Hagrid's being a half giant, but I doubt it will be taken as seriously as it was in the book.

How can they cut this out? It is an important part of Part 5. First, it is the reason Dumbledore uses him to check out the giants. Second, It is a big reason Umbridge hates Hagrid (since he is a half-breed).

I do agree that she will likely be downsized. How much, though, is uncertain.

This thread is interesting. It poses an interesting question....can this movie be good if it were limited to a 2.5 hour time frame? I would answer 'no'. I think that it is, by far, the most complex of the books. But we have to rememeber that the average viewer cannot sit through a film that is greater than 3 hours. I quite interested on how this dilemma will be faced.

Does anyone know when filming of this film begins?

Yeah, I came back here to say that. Guess I spoke about 24 hours too soon. I suppose that if I say Bagman will now be left out, we'll hear he's been cast... *thinks about it*

LUDO BAGMAN WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE IN THE GOF MOVIE! ;)

I'm glad they kept the Yule Ball scene, it was a rare chance Rowling gave the Potter kids to actually act like teenagers.

I thought Harry and Ron's respective infatuations were brilliant, and I also liked the subliminal messages in Hermione's downsizing of her teeth to look better.
