View Full Version : DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY

SPOILERS!

It gets off to a really slow start. I love Vince Vaughn, but there isn't a second in this movie where he does not look ashamed to be in it. He is half-asleep the entire time. Maybe he doesn't enjoy playing the good guy. I'd love to hear what others think about this, but IMO he was not even attempting to hide the fact that he's bored senseless. Anyway, first they introduce Vaughn and the regulars at his rundown Average Joe's gym. They're all typical losers and misfits and their introductions are pretty uninspired and not very funny. After about 30 minutes things are not looking good.

So Stiller owns the mega-gym across the street called Globo. They are a massive fitness center featuring state-of-the-art equipment, which includes huge video monitors that allow Stiller to personally insult the people working out ("You call that a bench press?" or something along those lines). He's in Zoolander-mode here. A totally clueless idiot with a David Hasselhoff circa 1980s hairstyle. He's uneven throughout; sometimes hilarious and sometimes simply annoying.

The plot is fairly obvious. Vaughn's gym is in debt. Stiller's gym is going to buy it and make it a parking lot. Vaughn's gym enters a dodgeball tournament in Vegas that offers a grand prize exactly equal to the amount his gym owes. Stiller's gym enters the tournament in order to humiliate Vaughn's team and stop them from winning the money.

The last 45 minutes or so are pretty damn funny. There are amusing cameos (Chuck Norris, William Shatner, Hasselhoff, Hank Azaria), and Gary Cole and Jason Bateman make a great broadcasting team (they work for ESPN 8 - The "Ocho"). Plus, Christine Taylor's character has a unicorn fetish, which I found pretty funny, though it may be something that has to be seen in order to be funny. Rip Torn has my personal favorite line: "You look like a bunch of retards trying to hump a doorknob." It's so wrong, it's right. Basically, if you think that line is funny, you'll probably like it. Not a comedy classic, but once it gets going in the second half, consistently humorous.

I can't disagree with a 5/10. It's right in that 5-6 area. It's definitely not a comedy classic by any means, and Joblo's right about Vaughn. Seeing him tone it down is not enjoyable. You'll laugh, but probably not as much as you'd hope in a Vaughn/Stiller movie.

This will probably be a renter for me. I just dont think it is worth the ticket price for me and my gf, soda, and popcorn. Still have to check out Potter and a couple of other newer films before I even consider Dodgeball.

I was let down by the trailers. I can not stand Stiller in certain roles and this looks to be one of them. Lately he has just not been funny. Vaughn is the man though.

It's a rare moment when I enjoy a dumb comedy, so when I say this film is HILARIOUS, I truly mean it. Most dumb comedies I either find bland or annoying but this one just had too many good laughs. 8/10

It does start off a bit slow, though.

And wait until the end of the end credits. Trust me on this one.

Of the three new realeases this weekend, THIS is the one I most look forward to (yes, even more than Spielberg and Hanks!) Looks like another clever, funny comedy starring Ben Stiller. Stiller's character reminds me of another character of his, the fat-camp drill sargent in his crappy film "Heavyweights." But this movie looks a lot better and funnier.

Oh yeah, and Lumberg (Gary Cole) is in the movie, so that's another plus.

I've decided that Ben Stiller + Vince Vaughn = unfunny. Old School was unfunny, save Will Ferrell, and this sucked even more. I tried to laugh at it and yes there were a couple of funny parts, mostly the cameos by David Hasselhoff, Chuck Norris, and Lance Armstrong, but whenever Stiller was onscreen my smile faded. The theater was also surprisingly quiet, which is weird since it was full of junior high boys - and they laugh at everything. A slightly cool twist involving how the money was spent was nice, but aside from that the plot was devoid of originality. They could have done a lot more with this movie - showing more quirky dodgeball teams, a Will Ferrell cameo, less Stiller, something, but they didn't.

I loved this movie. I thought Stiller's character is what brings 90% of all the humor in the film. His character was so bizarre it was great. Vaughn didnt do much, but that is the entire point of that character, not to do much. He just lies around and does nothing, because he cares about nothing.

And everyone needs to stay until after the credits roll. Its funniest damn shit I have seen in a long time!!!

All in all I was busting up and laughing throughout the entire film.

Liked it. Dragged a whole lot in the beginning though.
Yeah, Vaughn looked like he didn't give a shit. I enjoyed Stiller's character a lot. I hope I don't turn that fitness crazed EVER.

I think I laughed the most during that dodgeball video and the line about lead based paint.

Great movie! I haven't laughed so hard in a long, long time. One of my favorite scenes was with the girlscouts. "God damn it Bernice". Oh my god that was classic. And of course, Chuck Norris. I completely forgot he was in the film, which was even better because the moment was so perfect for him to just pop in. Too bad people who haven't seen the film yet, know about him and the famous line of Stiller. "Fuckin' Chuck Norris". LOL

A movie about dodgeball. I couldn't ask for a more promising theme and it paid up in full. The movie had some slow parts but for most of it I couldn't stop laughing. When the bit about "THe Ocho" came on I almost peed my pants. Funniest thing I had seen in awhile.

Acting wise everyone came through. Stiller was great as the over pumped knucklehead bad guy, Vince vaughn was fantastic as usual, and rip Torn gave a great go as patches. Plus you also can't go wrong with any movie that has a pirate in it.

You see Ben in the Fat suit just as you did earlier sitting on the couch.

He looks at the camera and starts to rant about how happy we all must be about how the movie ended. About how the cinema is so crappy because they always have to give the audience a happy ending.

He says a few other things that I can't remember then asks if you want to see something good.

Then a rap song starts to play, forgive me I am not down with all the latest rap stars or songs.

But the lyrics are about how "My milkshakes bring the boys to the yard" or some such. I am sure someone knows the female artist and the song title.

Well Milkshakes referes to her breasts and Ben starts to lipsync to the song while shaking his huge man breasts to the beat of the music and doing a little dance on the couch.

You have to see this to believe it!

Then after about 20 seconds of this he stops and says something like.

There are you happy, fatty made a funny, or the fat guy made you laugh or some such thing.

But this is a specticale that has to be witnessed to truly understand.

If you missed it, you lost out big time.

I loved this movie as it was a great stupid funny flick and this extra tidbit just put the cherry on top.

Well, nuts.

My friends and I actually watched a few minutes of the credits just to see if there were any bonus scenes. But then we left. Early.

Whoops.

The movie was quite funny, but I can't help but think Stiller should go for something a little more high-brow. The man is a major talent... and this is a movie about dodgeball.

But wait, that's one of the reasons why it works: because it shouldn't. There are some very funny moments, most of them (for me) coming from Stiller's ridiculous fitness guru character. Stiller is on fire here. Rip Torn throws wrenches at people as a famous dodgeball champion named Patches O'Houlihan (Hank Azaria plays him in an instructional video at a younger age, and is also very funny).

Regarding Vince Vaughn: I agree completely with Madsen. I think Vaughn is a cool man, but his turn as the "everyman hero" here was very bland, save for a few throwaway lines. I was far more interested whenever Stiller was on screen.

And all of this seems funnier now than when I saw it. So that bodes well for future viewings and the appeal of the "dodgeball comedy" genre. ;)

"Allow me to introduce my team. This is Blade. This is Laser. This is Blazer."

(and the funniest line in the entire film):
"Fuckin' Chuck Norris."

I also liked when Stiller was explaining the painting of him taking the bull by the horns to Christine Taylor, saying it's a metaphor, but it also really happened.

If this film doesn't finally convince America that Ben Stiller is NOT funny, I don't know what will. This movie was a complete waste of my hour and a half and if Vince Vaughan wasn't in the movie, I might have killed myself with boredom while watching it. I did not laugh once at anything Ben Stiller said. The reason? Because he's not funny and anything that was remotely funny that he said was all seen in the trailers. This concept would have been funny for a 5 minute skit on SNL, but not for an entire film. Hopefully this ends the collaboration with Vaughan and Stiller, because unlike Stiller, Vince Vaughan is actually funny.

I like Vince Vaughn a lot, but come on, his "performance" here is the weakest part of the movie. To call it terrible is an understatement. He looks completely dazed and bored the entire time. He sleepwalks through the whole movie. He is lifeless, apparently embarrassed to be in the movie at all, but probably not embarrassed to pick up his paycheck. As a fan of Vaughn, I was pretty annoyed to see him not even try to look like he wanted to be there. As for Stiller, I agree he is losing it. Look at the past nine months. Duplex, Along Came Polly, Starsky & Hutch, Envy, Dodgeball. That is three awful movies (Duplex, Polly, Envy), one mediocre one (Hutch: not as funny as it should have been with that cast), and one good one (Dodgeball). Even though I liked his latest, my tolerance for him is wearing this. Where are the challenging roles? Where are the risks? He needs to go away fast, so we can actually miss him and want to see him.

Most overrated movie of recent memory. With the bank this thing is making... I don't even want to think of the slew of copycats.

The problem here wasn't any of the individual actors... It's that there was 30 minutes MAX of good, funny material stretched out into a test of endurance. I LOVE good physical humor and low-brow shit as much as the next guy, but DAMN... find some new ways after the first 30 minutes to make me laugh or just give the fuck up.

Best dodgeball movie, EVER!

Seriously, this was a funny movie. The only real reason I didn't give it a higher rating was mostly because I wanted more DODGEBALL (more training sequences and more competition - the matches were too damn short). I think also, that I unfairly kept comparing it too much to Shaolin Soccer which I loved.

I thought Ben Stiller was funny and think he may have been funnier than in Starsky and Hutch. Everyone acted well enough except for the guy who played the pirate. I didn't like him. Regardless, this was still a funny movie.

I do have to say that the last scene after the credits has to be one of the funniest bits I have ever seen.

Brother's rating 8/10 - Says its the best American comedy so far this year.

Sister's rating 5/10 - Didn't think it was all that.

But I would say to them: BASEketball was a strangely clever, hilarious film about inventing a NEW sport. Dodgeball was about taking an old... "sport"... and trying to come up with something funny by throwing balls at people for an hour too long.

I was in stitches the whole time: one riot of a movie. I agree that Vaughn was terribly weak and Stiller did get obnoxious after a while, but as far as ridiculous comedies go, they hardly get any better. It was also cool to see Milton from OFFICE SPACE again in a movie.

Holy shit I was disappointed.

I love stupid comedies. I love Zoolander and Austin Powers, but they happened to be stupid and whitty at the same time! The humor is obvious AND subtle.

All the humor in this movie is completely obvious, and overplayed to an obnoxious level.

I did get some laughs, and there are a few quotables here and there, but come on - with a cast like this you'd think they could do better! Shame on you guys!

Enough of throwing balls to the balls. That wasn't funny after about the first time.

exactly what i thought here's my review:
Yawn... yet another flick with Ben Stiller, haven't we had enough of him this year? It's even more tedious, given he isn't funny with the fake accent and passive aggressive mood. Let me continue anyways. It stars Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor, Vince Vaughn, and the great Stephen Root (better known as Milton in Office Space). Even these guys, and the great cameos of Lance Armstrong, William Shatner, and Chuck Norris couldn't save the film from its shitty integrity. The concept was admitably pretty neat, a dodgeball film! I remember how much fun it used to be to play. But the whole Revenge of the Nerds ripoff scheme was disappointing. Reminiscent of the BASEketball days, although worse. Even Rip Torn was no good, because he couldn't give it all he is made of with a PG-13 restriction and 'lack-of-depth' script. The best he COULD do was talk about prostitutes in his hotel room and throw a wrench at some thin idiot. There's plenty of slapstick humor, but where the film truly fails is in the cleverness department. The young ones and the coke-heads will feel more than comfortable bursting with laughter every time some fucker gets hit in the face or nuts. It wasn't even funny the first time, find more originality. Dodge, Duck, Dive, Dip, Dodge; do what you got to do to avoid getting hit by a money vacuum (matinee or full admission).

-> A booger flicker.

If I had to stretch beyond my rating system i'd give it about a 3/10

Dodgeball is filled with dozens of cheap laughs and i gotta say most of them got to me. I loved seeing Ben Stiller revisit his character from Heavyweights and Vince Vaughn played the "everyman" to a T. Christine Taylor is uber hot and each cameo got a least a chuckle from me. There were also a few welcome surprises near the end. All in all I'm gunna go ahead and recommend Dodgeball. Keep in mind I thought this movie looked like crap, but positive WOM got my ass in the theater.
