Improving on both the debuts of its predecessing films, HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN settled in comfortable at Number 1 this past week with a staggering $11,935,745 (US $123,260,560), surpassing THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW as the Number 1 Highest Debut of 2004. Speaking of the Dennis Quaid disaster pic, it only declined 39% in its 3rd week to bring a still healthy $2,201,247, which takes its total to a nice $15,355,257 (US $158,573,895). Also declining 39% and racking up a good sum is buffed Brad's battles in TROY. The Wolfgang Petersen directed epic managed $1,074,978 in this, its 5th week of release taking its total to $20,766,144 (US $214,452,180). Vastly improving on its Advance Screening run last week, horror re-invisioning DAWN OF THE DEAD slipped into the Top 5 with a cool $1,050,498. All together the Sarah Polley led blood bath has $1,098,119 (US $11,340,286). Kate Hudson's feelgood family comedy RAISING HELEN is doing alright for itself, this week it only trailed 29%, and after 2 weeks it has an impressive $2,859,141 (US $29,526,378) to its name. Rising 12%, SUPER SIZE ME still does itself proud, this week crossing the Million dollar mark. After 2 weeks in national release and one week of Advance Screenings, the doco has $1,102,724 (US $11,387,841) to call its own. Before it opens nationally on the 24th, Lindsay Lohan's MEAN GIRLS had a small round of Preview Screenings which earned her a place at #10 with $107,534 (US $1,110,504). The impressive gritty thriller DIRTY PRETTY THINGS just missed out on a Top 10 debut, slipping in at #11 with $101,465 (US $1,047,830). Still hanging around in the Top 20, but likely to be leaving soon, is Paul Hogan's queer comedy STRANGE BEDFELLOWS and the trippy Jim Carrey experience ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, which dipped 35% and 34% respectively in their 8th and 9th week of release. They haven't performed badly, with the former scoring $4,709,266 (US $48,632,637), whilst the latter managing $3,234,033 (US $33,397,891). Falling a heavy 74% in its 8th, and likely last, week, Quentin Tarantino's killer continuation KILL BILL: VOLUME 2 rounds out the charts this week, with an impressive $8,331,412 (US $86,038,576).
THIS WEEK (June 17th): Shrek gets sequalized.
