John Huston's The Maltese Falcon may be the best, and most critically acclaimed movie in the film noir genre. I however, have my favorite, and that is:
Ridley Scott's Blade Runner
I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned, as it is clearly film noir. One of the best scifi films 9/10, and one of my all time favorites.
There are other good ones such as:
The Manchurian Candidate (which I loved, a great film!)
Double Indemnity
Touch of Evil
The Third Man
(Which are all classic examples.)
Critical Bill, I cannot believe that you have never heard of The Maltese Falcon! For a movie fan like yourself, that is a surprise.

For old film noirs, definitely The Maltese Falcon. You must see it Bill, it rocks!
For recent ones, either Memento or Fargo.

I can't ever get into Blade Runner, good movie, just can't get into it.
Dude, OK, OK....I've still have no idea what this movies about. Its rare a movie slips by me, much less so if its a good acclaimed movie.
Going on y'alls advice.
I went to the local rental place....no dice...I drove 20 min into the city to go look for it, I went to the malls, Warehouse Music, Circit City...never heard of it.
I hate South TX....we don't have shit....I live in a little pissant town were old people move to die, and the closest city to me don't have the movie I want.
I'll just have to order it over the net. I'll let you know how the quest goes.

That's weird I live in the north and I OWN The Maltese Falcon. It stars Humphrey Bogart and is probably about 50 years old, maybe that's why you're having so much trouble finding it...

You know, Warner Bros. had a bunch of rereleases of videos (new and old) when they had their 70 something anniversary. I bought The Maltese Falcon when it was in the Special Edition videocassete. I haven't seen it in quite a while, but I can tell you that the title says it all about the plot. Everyone is trying to get this mysterious falcon.
That probably isn't a very good description of what it is about, but it is better if you know nothing about it. Keep in mind that IT IS OLD, so don't get your expectations so high that you end up not liking it, once you have watched it. It is a great movie though, Bill.

The movie circulation is quite low here. Good example, I went to Best Buy today to buy Ginger Snaps, they don't carry it. They have it in their system, meaning other Best Buys' will get it but lucky me it isn't in demand here so basicly you get bent over. Thanks for nothing, you stupid guy in a blue shirt and yellow name tag person, YOU MOTAR.
(OK the prozac kicked in)
I'm looking on the net for it right now.
Thanks for the Discription Fergus, I can skip my next therpy session now.

Just so we're pretty clear, there haven't BEEN any film noirs since about 1960, so you'll have to back before that. Having said that, my favorite film noir is easily the Maltese Falcon. The darkest film noir I'd say is Kiss Me Deadly.

I would have to say that my favorite older film noirs would be To Have and Have Not, The Big Sleep and The Manchurian Candidate. But as far as recent, It would definately be a tie between L.A. Confidential and Dark City.

Except that neither of those movies are film noirs.

QUENTIN you said Favorite Neo-Noir twice..was that just a way of confusing people or did you mean to say something different the second time?

Yes, I'd say Neo-Noir counts, but even for that I have strict standards for what qualifies.
