I was wondering what you guys thought of either good cinematographers, or well-photographed films. Here's my top three:
ROGER DEAKINS (such consistently creative work)
JANUSZ KAMINSKI (really good)
JOHN TOLL (he did a good job with Braveheart)

I gotta say I think THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and TRAFFIC have excellent cinematography. But again, I'm not really a specialist of the pre-1977 (STAR WARS!) movies, so I probably am missing something. But I'm trying to repair that.

Vittorio Storaro, who shot Apocalypse Now, did an astonishing job for that movie.
im going to sound like an idiot but: what exactly is cinemotography?

The cinematographer "photographs" the movie. The cinematography is what you see in pictures, what and how the film was shot. That is my definition, no textbooks.

You're right Quentin, forgot about that one. Some great cinematography in that one. I love, absolutely love, the final shot of the film--a 360 rotation around the boat, WOW!

I gotta disagree with you again Shazam. How can you compare crap like Lawrence of Arabia and Dr Zhivago to the kind of cinematography in Sleepy Hollow and The Man With One Red Shoe? THAT, my friend, is genius. You might've also forgotten to mention the overrated cinematography in Citizen Kane.

One of the best has to be Barry Lyndon by John Alcott. He also did some of the other greats including A Clockwork Orange, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and The Shining.
Philip Marlowe
