First off if there's an official Sleepaway Camp thread point me to it and I apoligize in advance. I have to post this though because it's been irking me for a week or so now. I saw Sleepaway Camp and it was a good solid movie. A little scary, but mostly it kept you guessing and had a great shocker of an ending. A couple of weeks later I popped in Sleepaway Camp 2 and dare I say it was god awful. Zero scares, the gore was less then believable, and the acting was worse then it should have been even for a B movie. It just became so redundant in about the last 20 minutes that I didn't even want to watch anymore. The ending was beyond cheesy to the point of being lame. If anyone else feels that the original Sleepaway Camp is a horror classic and the sequal is just plain bad help me out here. I'd also like to hear from some people who actually have anything good to say about the sequal that doesn't involve boobs.

I agree with you about the first one, it's a classic. I like the second one as well, though. It's great fun.

Maybe I'm easily pleased, but I loved the humour (and the mullets). Yeah, it's nothing like the original, but if they'd tried to make it serious I don't think it would have worked.

You won't like the third film. It's like the second but not as good.

wow i think you're off on this. the first one was only good because of how ridiculously cheesy it is. they make it completely obvious who the killer is halfway through and try to hide it till the end. i dont even see that one scaring me when i was 5.
the second just carried the cheese to another level i think. it was still pretty fun.

The Sleepaway Camp movies can best be described as "cheesy fun."

The first took itself way too seriously...it tried too hard to be too many things at once (shocking, humorous, surprising, sexual).
The second is great in which it didn't take itself seriously at all and embraced its camp humor, while the third didn't take it seriously enough and turned to pure camp.

Never seen these movies they were released in uk in the '80s/90's as 'Nightmare Vacation' as far as i can gather
seen the Anchor Bay box on Play.com for £22. As they now have a region 2 release.

Are they worth the cash or are they purley nostalgia movies??

I guess to each his own. I just didn't find much entertainment value in Sleepaway Camp 2. But I'm sure there's others movies I love that everyone else hates. My fiance (who I force to sit through all my horror movies) wanted to kick my ass when it was over. She usually doesn't have that bad of a reaction. After Haute Tension she didn't want to go downstairs and get a glass of water alone. On one bright note the one character that entertained me was the lead male couselor whos name escapes me at the moment. Good stuff with him.

Sleepaway Camp, is about Angela Baker, who after losing her family due to a boating accident when she was young makes her very shy and she now lives with a stepmother. Angela, is sent with her cousin Ricky Baker, to Camp Arawak. While there Angela, is sent to the girl's cabin and is picked on by the girls and she doesn't participate in any of the camp activities. Ricky, tries to stick up for her as much as he can but he is not always around. Angela, soon becomes friends with Ricky's friend Paul, and Angela starts to talk more. But during this several people at the camp are being murdered and the counselors are trying not to tell or show the kids so their parents won't find out so that they will never send them back again. The camp counselors and the police do not know who the killer is but the killer keeps on striking. Sleepaway Camp, has become a cult classic through the 80's and today and is mostly talked about because of it's surprise ending which I will address later on in this review. Six scenes had to be shortened in the film to avoid getting an X rating and so far the cut material is not available on DVD or video to see. And now on to the ending. Before, I saw this film I was mostly told to see it because of the ending and how good it was. The type of endings I'm getting sick of seeing are ones like in The Sixth Sense, where the ending is so obvious but some people think it's so spectacular and go on about it causing people to go see it and spawning other recent horror films with similar type endings. Those, I don't like. Endings like in this year's great film Frailty, and Sleepaway Camp, I do like. This ending I could not see coming and unless you have been hinted about it or read a little too much about it on the internet then I don't think you will get it either. And the ending will stay in your mind long after you watch it making it a powerful scenes. As for the rest of the movie I enjoyed it too and was entertained the whole time and I hope this cult film finds more viewers now on VHS and DVD. This film was also so popular that two sequels followed.

SC belongs to my favorite slashers, for sure !

It is not your usual slasher there is something behind this movie.
Hiltzik wanted to do someting different I think.

There is this ambiguity, gay undertones, pesky kids, pedophilia, really interesting I think and the ending is what makes this slasher a classic.

Ahhh Sleepaway camp....I remember hearing about it, on the Net about 2 years ago. I had never heard of or seen this movie when I was a kid, and everyone was talking about the "shocking ending". So at Best Buy about a year and a half ago I bought the box set on sale for $19.99. So I invited my friend over, we got drunk and watched the movie, and loved it.

The ending actually shocked me, well not "shock", but we were like "Whooooa!" The second movie is a good movie to watch with friends and joke, and the 3rd one is just.....errrrrr......bad. But either way, if you find the Box Set I'd buy it.

I also got the box set that was taken off the shelves because the American Red Cross sued I think. So it makes a little bit cooler, to me anyway. I like corny stuff like that. :D

Yo' MrGreen, I have the same box set with the "Red Cross" emblem on it...I bought it at Best Buy for $25.00 the very day it hit the shelves! so I guess we both got it made in the shade...

By the way you have a Verrry Coool Avatar!!!!!!!! :D

I've only seen the first one and I enjoyed it. It scared the crap out of me, but I was seven years old when I saw it. I love cheesy older slashers that take themselves too seriously. I can't tolerate the intentional humor of the more modern movies.

I got it during some Halloween sell Best Buy was having, I was like "3 movies, plus a bonus disk for 20 bucks....why not?". Thanks for the comment! :D

The first one is my favorite. It's more serious and also just more brutal, my cup of tea. The second is fun cheese, though, and I love it but in another way. They really went in a different direction with the sequels but I enjoyed them. I agree with everyone who said if you dont like 2 you'll hate 3
