Another big new release, another sizeable debut. This week's unsurprising victor SHREK 2 was unleashed to a startling $13,159,869 (US $135,902,101), kicking HARRY POTTER out of the top spot for Highest Debut of 2004. On the topic of the mini magician, the sequel THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN earned a further $4,076,203 this week, despite dipping 66%. After two weeks it has accumulated a very impressive $20,525,056 (US $211,962,462), taking it to Number 2 on the Highest Grossing films of 2004. Jake Gyllenhaal and Brad Pitt still attracted their fair share of audiences, but dropped considerably. In its 4th week of release, THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW slid 53% but still managed $1,048,767, whilst TROY lost 50% of its audience in its 6th week of release to $534,331. Respectively the two films have racked up $17,377,561 (US $179,458,249) and $21,842,992 (US $225,572,801). Unfortunately dropping 53% in its second week, the bloody horror fun of DAWN OF THE DEAD settled just outside of the Top 5 with a total, so far, of $1,977,754 (US $20,424,285). Dropping 68%, the largest decline of the week, Hugh Jackman's vampire slaying alter ego VAN HELSING sat on the edge of the Top 10 this week, its 7th in release. Sitting a couple of million behind last year's hit X-MEN 2 after the same amount of time, the Kate Beckinsale accompanied action outing still has an admirable $12,599,260 (US $130,112,686), which is enough to sit it at #168 on the All Time Australian Box Office chart. Before it opens nationally this week, the doco/thriller TOUCHING THE VOID scored $65,926 (US $680,818) on its round of Advance Screenings. The "bastard love child of Trainspotting and Love Actually" INTERMISSION dipped 50% this week. The enjoyable Colin Farrell romp has managed $311,109 (US $3,212,825) after 3 weeks. Holding onto the 17th spot for a third week is the Alec Baldwin casino character drama THE COOLER. After 5 weeks in release, it has scored $558,198 (US $5,764,516). Long delayed and released with a non-existant promotional push was the black comedy DUPLEX starring Ben Stiller (Haven't we had enough of him?) and Drew Barrymore. It was expected to go straight to video, but somehow scored a cinema release. A rather poor cinema release. On only 6 screens it took in $19,837 (US $204,856).
THIS WEEK (June 24th): Lindsay Lohan goes from nice to nasty; Julia Stiles romances a royal; The Super Troopers go slasher; and we learn the truth can be ice cold.
