Mary-Kate Olsen being treated for eating disorder



LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- Teen actress Mary-Kate Olsen, who with her twin sister Ashley has grown into an American pop icon and fashion brand, has entered a program for treatment of an eating disorder reported to be anorexia.

The 18-year-old co-star of last month's film "New York Minute" recently "entered a treatment facility to seek professional help for a health-related issue," publicist Michael Pagnotta said Tuesday.

"She is thankful for the encouragement and support of her friends and family, who are with her every step of the way," he added.

A person familiar with the situation told Reuters that Olsen was suffering from an eating disorder. Olsen entered a facility during the past week or 10 days and was expected to remain in treatment for about a month, the person said.

Us Weekly magazine, in the cover story of its upcoming issue, identified the disorder as anorexia.

Speculation about Olsen's rail-thin figure has been the subject of tabloids, gossip columns and the Internet for weeks. The actress herself poked fun at the issue during the twins' recent appearance on "Saturday Night Live," shouting to an extra playing herself, "You're too skinny! Eat a sandwich!"

Pagnotta said both sisters, who turned 18 on June 13, were going ahead with plans to attend New York University together in the fall.

But Ashley Olsen will be making a planned trip later this month to Australia and New Zealand without Mary-Kate to launch overseas promotion of "New York Minute" -- the sisters' first theatrical feature, he said.

The twins have been in the public eye since they were 9 months old, starring in the television sitcom "Full House." Since then, they have sold millions of videos, DVDs and books and have launched their own fashion line.

But director-producer Michael Kruzan, who has worked with the twins for years, was quoted in Us Weekly as describing Mary-Kate as the "more competitive" of the two girls.

While I understand how hard it is to deal with someone with ADD (my nephews have it), I know it's not good for the child's self esteem to call them dumbasses.

For a child with ADD, saying that they'll pay attention is easier said than done.

As for those with anorexia, they have been convinced either by themselves or by others that they need to be skinny. This causes low self esteem and eating less.

It's a disease and should be treated as such.

Eating disorders are a whole otehr animal, its clear that when you have an eating disorder you have something seriously fucked in your head.

But when you have one of these "excuse" diseases/illnesses I just cant help but laugh.

"Well, hun, lets not punish him or try to help him in any way, lets just take him to the doctor and jack him full of meds."

Its an easy way out for parents/people to have an excuse for their problems, instead of actually focusing and trying to care of them yourself.

Usually it's not the child who says they aren't paying attention, but their teacher. Once they put the kid through some tests and determine if they DO have ADD, only then are they (or at least should be) put on the meds.

My nephews have ADD and my sis refuses to put them on Ridalin. They're highly intelligent still, but damn they have a hard time with that "paying attention and do what you're told" thing. ;)

I said it cause i think and feel is because of the media or some other reason (like drug use mentioned above) and i know people that are have anorexia and i'm not a dick to them because i've known them for years and i know they have been like this for years and is out of their control. But the thing with mary kate (right? or ashely? i don't know) is this shit all of a sudden happened and i don't believe it just popped out of nowhere and that's why i think it's intentinal but that's just my oponion and i could be wrong but i truly don't believe that she cannot control it and that's why i say and said that she's a stupid bitch. Naw i didn't mean everyone i was just talking about her because i really don't believe that it's out of her control. She even mentioned that when she was on the set of Full House the directors and everyone used to tell them not to eat candy and other sorts of foods so the media did kind of push her into turning into a skeleton but she can control it i think, all you gotta do is eat at McDonalds for a little bit and you'll gain it back (i could be wrong again because i don't have an eating problem so maybe once you're used to being so worried about your weight it is hard to eat...who knows.):confused:

I've heard a lot about this. Rumor has it that Faith Hill used coke to get her fabulous post-baby body back. But I have the feeling that if Ms. Olson is a cokehead, it probably has more to do with escapism than weightloss. Either way, there has GOT to be a better way to regain control of your life. Starvation and cocaine are NOT the way to go!
