Since it appears MGM will soon be owned by Sony how will they change the series

thus spoke moviefan1234.

What do you all think?

Personally, I don't think Sony would make any real sweeping changes. Why would they need to? Bond has been a very successful franchise thus far, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If they kept Bond as is, it would probably make them a lot of money, which I could cynically argue is very much what they want.

Whether or not change is needed is a more interesting question, and one I'm not sure about my answer too.

anyway, over to the schmoes...

Movie companies have a tendency of making shitty moves to good things (even MGM wanted to make Bond 'hipper' in the last two entries), so I wouldn't be surprised if Sony tried to cater to the teenybopper crowd a little more than MGM did.

I have this horrible vision of it descending into a sex education lesson...

"Bond. James Bond. I've had woman all over the world and I always use a condom"

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Well, yes to the message. Just no to the horrible mental image

I would like Sony to to do something to revive the series. In my opinion, it's gone downhill the last few films and needs to get going again. Whether it takes hiring a director who can improve things, or just simply starting over fresh with a Clive Owen or Hugh Jackman, I'd like to see things get better. Of course, my favorite theory to improve it is to just hire myself as James Bond. I could just dye my hair black and whip up a British accent and I'd be good to go.

A few things I feel the need to say...

1) Why do you feel its gone down hill? I've though the Brosnan films have been pretty good, with the exception of DAD..

2) What directors did you have in mind?

3) Personally I think Pierce should be given one more chance, be given a chance to bow out with a real flourish. Then we should grab Clive Owen and force him at gunpoint to be the next Bond.

You may now reply...

Pretty much the common consensus. Even though DAD is bad, Pierce is the last thing to blame.

BTW, just curious, is the JB forum the only forum that has a new mod? Where is the old one.

1) I feel it began going downhill after GoldenEye. Tomorrow Never Dies was still good, but since then they've really started to get bad.

2) My dream choice would be Quentin Tarantino. The more realistic choices I have are Antoine Fuqua, Luc Besson, and Wolfgang Petersen.

3) I don't think Pierce Brosnan is to blame, he's my second favorite Bond. But, I think it's time for him to pass on the torch.

Then you are in the minority. Pierce deserves one more is the common consensus and the wishes of most Bond fans and general audiences.

Can you for once be more productive and imaginative in your thought, say may be it's time for P&W to go instead because what sucked in DAD was the script. THE SCRIPT or the lack thereof.

Clive Owen is a good actor and has class, something other candidates lack. He should definitely take on the mantle in Bond 22.

I disagree. The way I look at it, with a new studio being in control now, it's time to start over with a new one. I agree with you on the fact that Clive Owen should be the next Bond. Others that would be good are Hugh Jackman and Paul Bettany. (with his hair dyed)

Hugh Jackman is gay and looks like a ferret. The majority wants Pierce Brosnan to continue as Bond. Period.

While you OPINION is quite valid, bozzy, I'd like to see some actual statistics saying that the majority think Pierce should stay.

Hmmm I'd be dubious about keeping Pierce on longer than one more movie and from what I've seen, especially on this site, its dangerous ground to say the majority want Pierce to stay...I personally would like to see him in one more movie, an absolute belter that can rank up against From Russia...in terms of sheer brilliance. Then the mantle should be handed over to the excellent Mr Owen.

Moviefan, good choices on the directors. I'm not convinced by Tarantino, for some reason I can't articulate, the idea makes me nervous. God knows why, because I like his movies, but theres something in my head that stops me seeing him and Bond together. It could be interesting, and I'd be there to watch it opening night, but...I just can't make it work in my head. I'm weird though.

Bozzy- I wish I looked like that ferret ;)

"if it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The problem is the franchise is broke. Since Cubby Broccolli died each film has got progressively worse as his daughter dumbs the series down into schlockbuster material indistinguishable from the likes of xXx or MI:II.

Hopefully Sony will sack her or if that isn't possible marginalise her involvement to where her producer credit is little more than name only.

Pierce Brosnan should also be binned (which looks like happening anyway) so the series can re-start with a clean slate.

I disagee. I don't think the series has got that bad yet. Goldeneye was pretty enjoyable, as was Tommorow Never Dies. The world is not enough has some moments that I thought were brilliant...In fact, the only which could be described as a bad movie would be Dire Another Day, and I'd still happily take that over XXX any day.

Even if DAD was a bit shite ;)

I think the next movie will make or break it, and I still think Pierce should be given one last shot at doing a truly great Bond movie..

Maybe you should be binned first.

Firstly, Sony deal is still in negotiation, secondly, even if Sony buys MGM, Bond will still be under MGM banner. thirdly, Eon is half owner of Bond film and has the creative control on Bond film, it is irrelevant who is the studio. All you said is pretty much rubbish.

Brosnan is a very popular Bond, as Clive Owen said recently,

" I think Pierce Brosnan has been fantastic, reinvigorated the franchise, made a fortune. As far as everyone knows, he’s doing the next one and they should come out and back him because he is James Bond. He’s the man.”
