Theres probably extra footage of nudity/sex, too graphic for it to get an R rating.

The Unrated version of a film, contains scenes that are deemed "too much" for general audiences. Usually the unrated version of a film, includes extended, or completely added scenes that usually involve either; extreme violence, or sexual content.
Theres also a good chance that an unrated version may also include scenes that the producers felt ran too long, that may not necessarly include sex, or violence.
The rated version, is what you saw in the theaters.
Hope this helps. :)

Unrated usually means that it didn't make enough cash
at the theater, so we're going to add some lame extras to try to get you to buy the DVD.
Example: Charlie's Angels-Full Throttle
And no I did not buy it.

Sometimes when a movie is rated by the MPAA it gets an NC-17 so the director and producers cut it down for an R for the theaters. When it's released on Video/DVD they'll put the cut footage back in and slap an "Unrated Version" on the cover.

It means that you would like to see more sex/nudity and violence/gore, so they tell you the movie is "unrated" and has more sex/nudity and violence/gore so you buy it, (you have to buy it since they don't have unrated movies at blockbuster to rent) but actually it just has about 3 sexy/violent shots that are extended by 1.5 seconds each, and some bad language dubbed in on what previously wasn't bad language, and a few deleted dialogue scenes that are in no way "unrated" or "too extreme for theaters".
Meaning, it is a marketing tool to get you to buy more than one version of the movie. Yes, it is usually a very slightly better version, but not anything amazing, and in my opinion most of these "unrated" films could get by with an R rating as easily as the theatrical version could.

They're doing the opposite for The Dreamers. The theatrical version was rated NC-17, but they're releasing both a R-rated cut as well as the NC-17 version on DVD come July 13.

As for the "Badder" Santa unrated version, I'd advise against it. They add, maybe two scenes that drag out the beggining way too much. The only thing I could see that would make it unrated was a strip club scene. I'd stick with the original unless you're that desperate to see a couple of fade boobs in the background.
